Proof on Ice: Southern Greenland Was Once Green; Earth Warmer
Scientific American ^ | July 5, 2007 | David Biello

Posted on 07/05/2007 4:37:15 PM PDT by Islander7

In 1981 researchers removed a long tube of ice from the center of a glacier in southern Greenland at a site known as Dye 3. More than a mile (two kilometers) long, the deep end of the core sample had been crushed by the pressure of the ice above it and sullied by contact with rock and soil. By destroying the pattern of annual layers, this contamination seemingly made it impossible to assess the region's ancient climate. But DNA extracted from the previously ignored dirty bottom has revealed that Greenland was not only green, it boasted boreal forests like those found in Canada and Scandinavia today.

Maybe.

But I think the grammar is a bit ambiguous in the linked article. Did the scientists find "insects ranging from butterfiles to spiders" or did they find "DNA from ...insects ranging from butterflies to spiders"?

The data shows that natural variations in Earth's orbit—obliquity, or how tilted the planet is in relation to the sun—have determined global temperatures in the past, they report...

natural variations in Earth's obliquity...

IMO the entire article is a fascinating example of ambiguity!

Back in 1961 in a course in field botany our class spent the day in a bog located on Buckeye lake near Columbus, Ohio. Growing on the bog were tropical plants kept warm by the decomposing bog. The bog had come from the Arctic region by being transported by the great glaciers which covered northern America. The region from which they came was once a tropic.

That lesson in climatology was 46 years ago. Now, why is this article, "news?"

Wow!

Juan Cabrillo's diaries of taking his ship up the California coast what, 250, 300 years ago? -- record pretty solid snowfall all the way to the water on the Big Sur section (roughly halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles), and unheard of in any histories of homesteaders going back to the 1850s. If it snowed there like that today, it would be considered environmental DISASTER!!! My God, the dead sea otters and sea lions -- and they're protected! Heads will roll!

DNA reveals a green Greenland
by Louis Buckley
July 5, 2007
Scientists have drilled through two kilometres of ice in southern Greenland and retrieved DNA from the pine forest that once existed there, buzzing with prehistoric insect life. Dated to between 450,000 and 800,000 years old, the DNA is among the oldest ever found... plant fossils dating to 2.4 million years ago have been found in the far northeast of the country. But, surprisingly, the DNA evidence for plant life stops at 450,000 years ago. Researchers say the lack of younger DNA suggests that this portion of the land has been covered by ice ever since -- and that goes against the prevailing view of Greenland's climatic history. During the last interglacial period (130-116 thousand years ago), the climate was 5 °C warmer than it is today, says Eske Willerslev, director of the centre for ancient genetics at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. "Sea levels were 5-6 metres higher, and most scientific models have assumed that the melting of the southern Greenland ice cap was responsible. But our data suggest that this was not the case."

One could also argue that if natural warming can deglaciate much of southern Greenland, then natural warming plus anthropogenic warming could cause even more extensive deglaciation."

I knew one of these guys would have to insist that this can't just be a natural occurance...nooooo, man is to blame along with natural cycles.

These dishonest idiots will not be changed from their religious belief that man is really responsible for "global warming" FARCE!!

Did the scientists find "insects ranging from butterfiles to spiders" or did they find "DNA from ...insects ranging from butterflies to spiders"?

From the article: Biologist Eske Willerslev of the University of Copenhagen and an international team of colleagues discovered DNA from alder, spruce, pine and yew trees at the glacier's base as well as insects ranging from butterflies to spiders. This is the "first evidence for a forested southern Greenland," Willerslev says.

What I was pointing out was that the sentence should have made clear whether the scientists found actual "insects" or just the DNA from insects. I believe there is another article posted on FR which indicates that everything they are describing was from DNA.
