Has anyone been experiencing difficulties with "Acuvue" contacts that are now made in China?
I ask that question because I have worn Acuvue Daily Wear contacts for many years with relative ease. That is, until about three years ago when I began experiencing quite a bit of difficulty with irritation and some infections.
At first I had attributed my problems to allergies and dry eyes. Later I learned that a product I had received, "Renew" contact solution had been recalled by FDA as causing or contributing to eye infections.
I threw out my bottle and was relieved and went back to using my former brand name.
I still was having more irritation than before and asked for the Accuvue "Oasis" contacts for dry eyes. Situation stayed mostly the same and I could no longer keep contacts in for more than one day (directions indicate 2 weeks then replace with fresh lenses.)
I asked for some other types, as well as the one I had used prior and thought worked better.
After another six months on the original type used, I find that I can only keep them in for about 2-4 hours, sometimes less, then need to switch to glasses.
I had noticed after first problem with excessive irritation and infections that it was about that time I noticed boxes stating that the products were now being made in China.
With all of the revelations about many products from China not meeting our health standards, I have become suspicious that these products that are packaged and sealed in solution, have never come under scrutinity by FDA or any other agency in U.S. and perhaps what consumers are getting does not measure up to same quality and sterility as when made in U.S.A
Yes, my new bifocal Acuviews are not as comfortable as they claim.
Coming soon artificial knees, hips and hearts made in China.
They will own us within 20 years.
It’s not uncommon for people to develop sensitivity to contact lens wear. “Made in China” may, or may not be the cause. My son maintains a pair of backup glasses.
That’s what people were saying about Japan in the 80’s...

As an aside, perhaps you should get the fit checked. Not sure if this is accurate, but we were told that the lens should overshoot the iris by a bit. If it rides on the area where the iris meets the sclera that can be a source of irritation. Any opthalmologists out there?
I use the same lenses with no troubles. Of course, contacts give you stoner eyes regardless of brand. Ovie dude.
I don’t wear contacts but I just have to say this is becoming ridiculous ... Exactly how much less can a dime sized sliver of plastic be made to make it economical to produce it halfway around the world and then ship it?
These are your eyes, go see your optometrist.
Hey, I’ve worn contact lenses for 41 years and have a very complicated prescription, I now wear Cooper Vision astigmatic lenses, made in USA (out of Huntington Beach, CA). They are great but the solution I use, AMO Complete, which used to be made in Spain is now made in CHINA. Oh my God....I have had so many problems that I rarely wear my contacts unless I’m going into social situations or have to drive long distances. Get huge mucous threads that wrap themselves all over my contacts until my vision is so obscured I’m afraid to be on the road, get so scared I will kill myself or others.
Is this the China syndrome?
The lens itself is nothing. It is the cost of the plant and the people to run it that is reduced by making these outside the US. For many years, contact lenses were made outside the US - this is nothing new.
If you have wrapping mucus strands, you likely have an infection my friend.
But my ophthamologist says no infection. Use Refresh eye drops, he says. Not when contacts are in of course. Wear contacts as little as possible he says.
I now wear focus dailies and have had no problems with them at all.
You may want to explore other brands.
Before continuing to wear those contacts, have them tested. If you get me the manufacturer's exact name, I may be able to find out more information for you.
I cannot wear my contacts as much as I used to. I’ve always gotten seriously bloodshot eyes any time I’m in fluorescent lighting (like stores, etc) or on the computer for any length of time. I have asked my opthamologist about this, but he just shrugs and says that is a problem with gas permeable lenses sometimes. They’re harder. Well, since my newer prescription, they fog up very easily and my eyes get redder faster. I don’t know where they’re made, but they definitely do not seem like the same quality of my older lenses.
Unfortunately, I am not a candidate for Lasik because of very poor vision. So, I wear my glasses a lot now. My eyes aren’t bloodshot, either. So I guess that’s a bonus. And my hubby said I look like a “hot secretary”. So I guess it’s not all bad. ;^)
I don't know if they do lens implants on non cataract eyes, but I LOVE 'em.
WE won’t be around in twenty years if we continue on this path.
