I was listening to the news out of the corner of my ear when I heard FreeRepublic specifically mentioned as a "hate site" about fifteen minutes ago.
Ostensibly the long report was about the Klan using the web to recruit new wackos. Then the focus turned to Casa Maryland, and their director who claimed that calls for his murder had circulated on the internet by anti-immigrant bigots. It was then that the anchor identified FR by name as a hate site.
Thanks, backhoe. I’m coming close to my 7 year anniversary as well — 7 years as of Sept. 14! And, I agree it’s a GREAT site. I can’t tell you how much I have learned here, and how many FRiends I have made. It is the FARTHEST thing from a hate site — even on contentious threads as long as one remains respectful in explaining their views. Back when I was still a Libertarian I had offline friends who asked me how in the world I could post here — it’s easy when you remain respectful! (I will admit I’m a lot more conservative — and religious — now though. Perhaps, that is what they were afraid of! LOL)
I have seen my share of trolls and inappropriate comments, but they were always dealt with VERY quickly as soon as someone bothers to report via the ABUSE button! I’ve never been on another site that responds so quickly. Although, FReepers have to actually REPORT the comments instead of just wringing their hands, and retorting in thread! Also, these reporters don’t bother looking at the replies to a certain post to SEE that other FReepers have basically strung-up and run out of town those posters who were prone to these horrific comments! After all, that wouldn’t suit their purposes.
Ken Hamblin explained it very well about not just listening to one particular show to judge it. Very wise words, and thanks for sharing them!
Not when people can come here and read for themselves 24/7. They won't see anything like what has been stated.

Excuse me, but I'm part of that 'anti-immigration crowd'. And that in itself is a mischaracterization. I'm not anti-immigration, nor do I know anyone on FR who is. I'm anti-illegal-immigration. And no, it has nothing to do with disliking Hispanics. Frankly, that's a disgusting and stupid comment to make. It has nothing to do with race, everything to do with breaking the law to enter America, the resultant increase in crime, working off the books and not paying taxes, employers hiring illegals because they believe they can do so at less expense, and increased costs to real Americans through having to pay for them with hospitalization, insurance, etc. THAT'S WHAT I'M AGAINST!

Your post might have had some impact if you had been honest in your initial statement and said anti-ILLEGAL immigration crowd. But no, the truth doesn't fit you adgenda. As it is, I didn't bother to read the rest of your post.
Once the label has been made to stick, most outsiders won't come here at all.
And a couple of rousing immigration threads full of "stongly expressed opinions" are all it would take to chase away the majority of those who do come to check us out.
It's mighty tempting to blame the outside media, and to some extent it's true that they have an anti-FR agenda. But the truth is that FR has an internal problem as well, in that we seem to be helping them along.
I believe the term is “projection.”
I think the core issue is sovereignty. I will take this opportunity to express to my conservative friends that they have done a very poor job of expressing their core concerns about illegal immigration but the conservatives I know are NOT haters and you will do well not to throw this label around if you value your free speech.

This is a great example of the unreliability of what we call “journalism”. If they’re this inaccurate about FR, just imagine how inaccurate they are about other things they report. You have to shake your head.
I’ve never seen the vile, irrational, dishonest doggerel that you see in places like the DU, DailyKos, or Huffpost on FR.
