Positions Drawn in Public Press Conference

Austin-Today the Republican Party of Texas held a public press conference to determine which order the Presidential candidates would be placed on the ballot for the Townhall.com Texas Republican Presidential Straw Poll. Republican Party of Texas Chairman Tina Benkiser and Republican National Committeeman Bill Crocker did the honors of hosting the random ballot selection. The ballot order will be:

1. Ray McKinney
2. Sam Brownback
3. Mitt Romney
4. John McCain
5. Ron Paul
6. Rudy Giuliani
7. Fred Thompson
8. Duncan Hunter
9. Mike Huckabee
10. John Cox
11. Hugh Cort
12. Tom Tancredo

"This is a fantastic opportunity to bring thousands of Texas GOP grassroots leaders together to voice their choice for President of the United States in 2008. This event has taken on even more significance as it may be the only opportunity for Texas Republicans to say who they support for President before the early primary elections are held in other states. Texas Republicans are some of the nation’s strongest grassroots supporters and deserve the chance to have their voices heard nationwide. This is the first event of its kind in Texas and we trust that this isn't going to be the last; we hope to be unfolding a new Texas tradition," stated Republican Party of Texas Chairman Tina Benkiser.

The Townhall.com Texas Republican Presidential Straw Poll will be held Friday, August 31st through Saturday, September 1st at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Thousands of activists from Texas are expected to attend and vote for who they believe the 2008 Republican Presidential candidate should be.

Ray McKinney and Hugh Cort? I would add John Cox but I heard of him from Iowa.

Me neither. You have to be pretty obscure as a GOP candidate for a regular FReeper to have never heard of you.

I believe the Ron Paul campaign has been really pushing to do well in this.

Yes, the campaign emails started mentioning it right after Ames.

I think it will be a free-for-all. But I don’t think Ron Paul will do badly either.

It will interesting to see which candidates actually attend. The last info I saw was that only Paul, Brownback, Huckabee and Hunter had indicated attendance. I know that the big three are skipping along with Thompson.

I’m not sure how to read this one as the Texas Republican Party group tends to be more to the right wing side. Also Paul can’t spam the vote because attendees who can vote have to have been delegates to the Party or National conventions in some past time frame. In other words candidates can’t buy tickets and disperse them to the general public hoping to get a vote.

Also read that the attendance may not be but some 2,000 or so, most likely less since the Legislature failed to move the Texas Primary forward. Thus approximately 60% of the delegates will have been selected prior to the Texas Primary. Origially they were speculating on some 10,000 attendees.

I was a delegate, but why should I go and spend many hundreds of dollars to listen to 1% candidates? If they wanted good representation they should have mailed a ballot to all former delegates with return postage.

Sorry, but it appears this event will be a total flop. It’s no where near representative of primary voters in Texas.

I think your observations are correct...... It won’t be the premier event they envisioned and as far as the winner being representative of the voters, I just don’t know how it will come out. I truly have no feel for the outcome at this stage. I guess it depends upon which faction shows up with the largest number of delegates.

But all in all I doubt it will have much impact no matter the winner, be it lower tier, off the wall or top tier.

Well, I was planning on going...But I changed my mind...I’ll make my decision whenever our dag-gum primary is going to be held...

The whole process of the states changing their primary dates to some earlier point on the calendar is utterly stupid, and reeks of impatience and anger festering from the democratic/liberal/childish side of the aisle...

My order of preference is 7, 8, 12, 5, 9, 2

Since it appears everyone wants to get this over with, those that are not mentioned can go home...Some can do so out of respect for the attempt, and will be remembered for that...Some of the others can go away, and never come back, or they can change parties and run on the other ticket next time...

I wonder how they decided which of the joke candidates to put on the ballot.

From an SREC member:

Anyone who has filed with the ethics committee as collecting campaign funds was put on the ballot, if they wanted to be on it. So a GPAC type reporting, an exploratory committee, or a stated candidate was eligible to be on the ballot.

Some of the lesser know names called and asked to be on the ballot. If they had a financial reporting vehicle in place, they were placed on the ballot.

Hope this answers the question.

Thanks. I was wondering why some of the gadflies (gadflys?) were there, and some weren’t. You answered that.
