'Lost tribe of Israel' arrives in Jewish state

TEL AVIV – One-hundred-seventy-four people from a group of thousands in India that believes it is one of the 10 "lost tribes" of Israel landed here this week, fulfilling for many a life-long dream of returning to what they consider their homeland.

Shavei Israel, a Jerusalem-based organization led by American Michael Freund, hopes to bring to the Jewish state the remaining 7,000 Indian citizens who believe they are the Bnei Menashe, the descendants of Manasseh, one of biblical patriarch Joseph's two sons and a grandson of Jacob.

The tribe lives in the two Indian states of Mizoram and Manipur, to which they claim to have been exiled from Israel more than 2,700 years ago by the Assyrian empire.

"I truly believe this is a miracle of immense historical and even biblical significance," Freund told WND as the group of 174 arrived here earlier this week.

"Just as the prophets foretold so long ago, the lost tribes of Israel are being brought back from the exile," said Freund, who previously served as deputy communications director under former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Another planeload of 57 Bnei Menashe is slated to touch down in Israel tomorrow.

The group, which has preserved ancient Jewish customs and rituals, has been trying the past 50 years to return to Israel.

Over the last decade, Freund's Shavei Israel, at times working with other organizations, brought about 1,200 Bnei Menashe members to the Jewish state. Many settled in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria. About 80 lived in Gaza's slate of Jewish communities, which were evacuated by the Israeli government in 2005.

The original batches of Bnei Menashe to arrive here were brought to Israel as tourists in an agreement with Israel's Interior Ministry.

Christ Himself said in Matthew 10:5-6 for His elected disciples to go to but the lost sheep of the House of Israel, now where did that message of Christ get sent? Further to whom has that promise to Abraham which is where all this got started, that promise of blessings?

So Christ knew who and where those lost sheep of the House of Israel were, however, as it is written even to this day the majority do not have a clue who they are. No matter what some claim.

Hmm... didn’t Jesus tell his apostles to settle down and stop arguing amongst themselves as THEY WOULD JUDGE THE TWELVE TRIBES OF ISRAEL IN HEAVEN. Are the twelve tribes Christian?

Matthew chapter 10 -- Those were lost sheep, not lost tribes. The “lost” in Matthew 10 is dealing with their spiritual condition, not with their tribal geography. The “lost sheep” would have included the people in the land of Israel when the disciples were sent to preach, so “lost” here is not referring to someone who could not be found. Their SOULS were lost as to their spiritual condition.

The passage is also instructing the disciples to make a distinction between Jews and Gentiles, and the disciples were forbidden to go to either the Gentiles or to Samaritans (half-Jew/half-Gentile). The disciples were restricted to the cities of Israel at that day.

Everyone to whom the disciples were sent to preach during the earthly ministry of our Lord was present in the land Israel in that day.

All twelve tribes were represented in Acts 2 at Pentecost.

James wrote to all Twelve Tribes without any hint that some of them could not be reached with his letter. UNLESS you reserve that the Book has a future application to Israel when the tribes are regathered (e.g. after the Body of Christ is completed and removed in time for Daniel’s 70th week to be fulfilled) — an interesting concept.

The passage is also instructing the disciples to make a distinction between Jews and Gentiles, and the disciples were forbidden to go to either the Gentiles or to Samaritans (half-Jew/half-Gentile). The disciples were restricted to the cities of Israel at that day.

That is correct, and remained so until Peter is told what the crucification meant to all souls not just those of Israel. Some in Christianity claim it was about making swine clean to eat but the instruction is given in Acts 10: the whole chapter. All in Christ were no longer distinguishable by 'race'. However, there are responsibilities given to specific peoples, not just to the House of Israel and House of Judah, that still remain in effect, given to Abraham down through the ages.

Everyone to whom the disciples were sent to preach during the earthly ministry of our Lord was present in the land Israel in that day.

Where did those the majority of the disciples go after the death of Christ? Where did John take Mary the mother of Christ? What happened on that piece of real estate was/is not limited to whom and where that Gospel would be taken.

All twelve tribes were represented in Acts 2 at Pentecost.

Actually it says there were 'devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Pentecost, that word literally means 'count fifty', so fifty days after the crucification the 'Comforter' was sent. What took place at Pentecost was what Joel the prophet described and demonstrated what would be when it would be the Holy Spirit that spoke through a human flesh body, still yet to happen. That act if refused would cause the person to commit the unpardonable sin if they refused that Holy Spirit to speak the WORD, in a tongue that everyone who heard would understand in their own tongue. Has not happened yet.

Yes, James did write his letter "to the twelves tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting..." yet where in this day and age are the holders of James' letter? Christians.

No, actually Jesus promoted the lost sheep of the House of Israel. The House of Israel is the ten northern tribes scattered throughout all the nations.

Jesus said “I came only for the LOST SHEEP OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL.” not to be confused with the Jews of the House of Judah. Jews only come from the tribe of Judah. The House of Israel is a whole different nation and peoples from the Jews.

Abraham wasn’t a Jew, Isaac wasn’t a Jew, Jacob wasn’t a Jew, Moses wasn’t a Jew. Oh Yeah Jesus was a Jew.

According to what Luke tells us Christ came from the king line, Judah, and the priest line, Levi. Fulfilling that still yet future King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Moses was from the tribe of Levi.

Your post is Good. I enjoyed it and appreciate EVERY word of it. By the way, I teach the book of James, and do so as a Pauline Christian. . . because I have Paul’s Epistles to prevent me from acting like a Kingdom-age Israelite. Thanks again.

Thank you, and you are welcome.

I am sorry I do not know what a Pauline Christian is, and am not sure what a Kingdom-age Israelite is either.

I too have enjoyed our discussion.

It is a fallacy to teach that the Bible never uses “Israel” to discuss the the combined twelve tribes.

Thanks for your post. I have never heard of British Israelism or of Gene Scott. I do believe that we will find the blood of Israel flowing through much of the world’s civilizations, diluted but there. If those people qualify as Children of Israel, then the prophecies indicate they will eventually claim their inheritance.

Let me think...were the nephites the dark race, or the light race? Was the spirit that appeared to joseph smith, moroni, a nephite or not a nephite?

Even the term "10 Lost Tribes" is ridiculously ignorant. Of the 12 Tribes, Judah, Benjamin & Shimon were part of the Southern Kingdom and Levi was scattered all over, including partially in the south. So only 8 tribes were "lost" (and even then, individual members of all tribes almost certainly made it to the south). The term 10 Lost Tribes originally meant not that the entire tribe was lost, but that the members of the tribes lost their tribal identity (hence Judah, Benjamin & Shimon became just "Jews," after the largest tribe -- Judah, while Levi maintains an independent tribal identity to this day).

Even among the 8 Lost Tribes, their fate is decidedly unsexy. Large numbers became the Samaritans, others became the Kurdish and Bukharian Jews (who have traditions of being from the so-called Lost Tribes), and most just assimilated.

The Ethiopian Jews almost certainly descend from a mix of Jews and early Jewish converts. The so-called Bnei Menashe have no genetic or historical connection to Israel (and had no tradition of being so until 50 years ago), but are of course welcome to convert.

They were pagans who were missionized during the British period. Most of them today combine their traditional tribal pagan beliefs with Christian ones. I doubt that few hear would consider them true Christians. But their Christian influences are mostly Protestant.

Yes, indeed. But you’ll have to excuse me for believing that in order to get that far, they must turn to their Messiah.
