I'm considering buying a Ruger P345 for CC. The written reviews I've read are excellent. However, it has to pass the Freeper peer review board before I buy it. So what do you think?
Mike
One nice thing about the Glock G30 is that, besides the standard 10-round mag, it will also accept the 13 round mags from the full-size G21. So you can have the 10-round mag in the gun while carrying, and keep a high-cap mag in your pocket when you feel the need
I understand that the recoil is considerably reduced and I though a small barrel with a hefty load would be an effective close quarter weapon. Sorry to hear about the reliability issues
.
It’s completely useless as a home defense firearm. It doesn’t have the portability, it’s expensive and it has too much collector’s status. I would still recommend it for a conversation piece.
Your article has three mistakes to it.
Yeah, there’s that too. A situation that 35 rounds of .45 cannot get you out of, is not likely to be survivable with more rounds anyway
Congratulations. You are now an official Gun Nut ... and that is indeed a Good Thing.
BTW, I have a Ruger 10/22 too. I've had it for, oh gosh, 20 years, no more than that, call it 25 years. I know it's not 30, 'cause I bought it at a sporting goods store in a mainstream indoor shopping mall in Dallas Texas, and I've only lived in Texas a few months more than 30 years, and I'm pretty sure I didn't get in the first year or two.
Originally came with a wood stock, which I've still got, but I bought a "take off" black stock at a gun show. Taken off by a guy who would also replace the barrel with a heavy target barrel and add a target stock as well. He basically kept the stainless receiver and built from their. Changes the entire look of the rifle. Add a big old curved 25 round magazine, or even just a straight 10 rounder in place of the original 10 round rotary, and it begins to look like an Eveeel Assault weapon.
It’s purely a novelty item. It’s no good for self defense or to actually use for shooting.
Mine is a G29 in olive drab.
I’ve been told that the glock is designed to flex under recoil. This is supposedly glock’s way of reducing felt recoil.
I suggest you take a look at the new walther pps
I’ve fired the XD 45 caliber in both the 4” version and the 5” version. It is a VERY nice handgun. Think of a glock with a few improvements. The gunshop owner where I buy my handguns tells me the XD is the fastest selling handgun he’s ever seen. He carries one himself. I think of the XD as basically a glock but with a better shaped grip frame that fits your hand better. The grip is also thinner due to the mags not having a thick plastic coating.
In 9mm the PM9 is the smallest you can actually carry comfortably and still have an adequate caliber, the new PM45 is an unknown, but if the reliability is there, that is also something to consider.
Now, there are a lot of gun people on FR, and I will not claim to be the all-knowing-guru, but I have 30 years of shooting, collecting and the last 15 ears in dealing with CCW issues. On occasion I provide instruction on how to carry and what to carry. My weekends are spent at the largest gun shop in the state providing the same advice there that I would give you here.
.
The new walther pps is about the same size as a kahr pm9/pm40. I own a pm9 and have ordered a walther pps. I don’t care for the trigger on the pm9. It’s too small. THere’s not enough room in the trigger guard for my finger. I’m hoping the pps is a little more comfortable. If not, I’ll have to start looking at something else. I might end up going for one of those new little 5 shot scandium revolvers by smith and wesson. The problem I have with carrying a handgun is that I get sick of the nuisance and start leaving it home. I starting to think I’d be better off with a little .32 if it means I have it on me more often.
I’ve always thought the mateba would be really cool with a ten shot cylinder chambered in .30 carbine.
What are the three mistakes?
I understand the frustration of having to remember to carry, or even what to carry. I get that way sometimes, but I remember the days I was frustrated and carried anyway, and it saved my life. Depending on your location, there are a number of ways to carry that are easy on the hip or pocket. Finding that small package to fit a large hand is always a problem. Have you looked at the XD's in Sub-compact from Springfield? Or perhaps one of the Taurus Milliniums or their Titanium 45's like this one. Lightweight, big-bore.
Ten shot cylinder? Have you any idea how big the cylinder would have to be to accomodate ten?
The Mateba is a shooter and plinker. It has to experienced at least once. That’s why I bought the three I have. When I bought the first one it had no collector status at all since they were still in production. I had ever reason to keep shooting it but I was sidetracked with other toys.
If there was a caliber that I wish it came in, it would have to be either .40 or .45 Auto. Just redesign the cylinder for moon clips.
The three mistakes are:
There’s two recoil springs supplied for the guns I bought. One for .38 Special and one for .357 Magnum so that comment about not cycling with weak loads doesn’t really hold true.
The cylinder swings from the bottom like a normal one. Take a good look at the picture.
The article implies the cylinder advances on the recoil. Yes and no. The hammer is recocked by the rearward movement but the cylinder advances when the upper returns to battery on the forward stroke to minimize unnecessary shock from heavier loads.
I also like the grip and trigger safeties as an improvement on the Glock. I don’t have a whole lot of experience with Glocks, but I know some folks who don’t think the safeties are adequate; haven’t heard that complaint about the XD.
My brainstorm was a cattleman carbine version of the mateba with a ten round cylinder shooting 30 carbine. Not sure how well it would work though since the barrel has to recoil along with the cylinder. Maybe the barrel would have to be fairly short to keep the weight down, like say a 12 incher.
Also, it would be cool if mateba could incorporate the Nagant gas seal mechanism into their design.
