I realize the number left at the Q isn’t from you but holy cow must there be a darn lot of volunteers left there b/c there are way, way, way, way more than 700 cars there as of an hour ago when I finally returned home and drove past Qualcomm...and that would mean every person there drove a vehicle (and I could only see about half of the parking lot!) ha!

Man, I was surprised how there were that many people left when I drove past since most are allowed back or are with others at this point, but hearing it’s only 700 surprises me.

Wow is it a media circus like I have never seen before. I have cable trucks literally a stone’s throw from my home...and no joke there must be 100 others I saw from all over the country. Jonathan Hunt on Fox is down my street (still!) It’s bizarre.

My good friends are one of the only families on their street with a home left. They all finally coned off the street b/c they felt like they were a zoo exhibit and wanted people to stop watching them all sift through the rubble and stare at them. “Overwhelmed” seems to be the word of the day from most everyone I’ve talked to...no matter what they returned to here.

On that note, to all who were praying for me (among many others) thank you! And this overwhelmed evacuee is going to bed!

Actually, I did a little more research. There are “corridors” near housing developments that are designated as “habitat.” BUT, residents are not prohibited from clearing brush on or near their own property. It is the corridor/habitat that is supposedly left as is. I’m not defending it, but just clarifying.

In many locations in SoCal, homeowners are REQUIRED to clear brush.

Occasionally, when brush build-up gets bad, controlled burns are implemented to prevent un-controlled burns.

That’s what I get for believing Cedar Dave...:)

I wish the media klutzes would “git” and let you have some peace. I was hoping, hoping for that.

I really don’t think anyone is stopping people from clearing brush on or adjacent to their property... are they?

Yes. All the time. There are too many examples to list, but here is one example:

On October 26, 1993, dozens of homes and tens of thousands of acres in Riverside County were burned as a direct result of policies imposed by the Fish and Wildlife Service. The FWS designated 77,000 acres in Riverside County as a "rat preserve" for the kangaroo rat. Homeowners in that area knew that the buildup of brush posed a grave fire danger and sought to lightly plow their land in order to create firebreaks. But the Fish and Wildlife Service repeatedly threatened prison sentences and fines of up to $100,000 against homeowners who sought to protect their homes against fire hazards in the area of "protected" rat habitat.

Corridor habitat is ridiculous as well, if it puts the habitat of humans in a secondary position to the habitat of animals, but the word itself is problematic. It makes it sound as though there are vast public easements that the counties are dedicating to species preservation alone. A lot of those “corridors” are owned by private individuals who would prefer they be kept clear, or, in some cases farmed. We knew of one farmer who faced a fish & game official, complete with side arm, when he tried to disk his field, in prepartion for planting.

This is just insanity—and it’s a lot more widespread than you are making it sound.

No, really, farmer18th, I didn’t say I condone the habitat thing just described it. Some in the area have described those corridors as “freeways for fire”... and they don’t always successfully save the species.

You must recognize, though, that SoCal IS Fire Country. There’s no way around it; it’s the nature of the landscape. In fact, throughout the west nature has always “managed” the land via wildfires.

I think eco-systems are adaptable, and will transform as needed as the habitat changes.

Well, I hope your farmer friend went ahead and did what he needed to do. I’ve heard of folks who defied “regulations” and did not suffer penalties.

They also stopped people from building on their own property. There was own house half built and they were told to keep off their land or be fined. It was in the courts last I heard.

Pics of Super Scooper dipping in Big Bear Lake today. I heard Big Mike from Big Bear MWD on the scanner closing the lake so they could their scoops

http://www.socalmountains.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?33928

Moderate smoke and ash here in Redlands. Yesterday the smoke was real heavy driving to work to Pomona from the Slide Fire.

Listening to scanner it sounds like the fire around Running Springs is still causing problems. The Super Scooper may be back tomorrow to lend a hand.

Enchiladita, I've tried to avoid commenting on this before my prior post, trying to stay on topic, but you are so wrong! Under the Endangered Species Act, the FWS has been prohibiting homeowners from all sorts of acts on their own property. When they don't comply, they are charged with a crime, pay financial penalties, and often have their property seized by the government, creating the very "corridors" you mention.

Read some of the environmental threads. Read some of Carry_Okie's posts, or Marsh2, or tubebender, or hedgetrimmer, SierraWasp, or sergeantdave, or dozens of others. Richard Pombo was leading the charge to weaken the ESA and the left launched an all out assault to get him out of office. The environmental movement IS the new communist movement, out to destroy property rights through creation of conservancies, habitat conservation, Agenda21, green corridors, etc.

Here is but another example, one of only thousands!

Another egregious example from California involved Tang Ming-Lin, a Taiwanese immigrant who bought 723 acres of undeveloped farmland in Kern County, all of which was zoned for agriculture. One day in 1994, when his foreman was plowing a new field, some 20 government agents (6 of whom were armed) raided his farm and confiscated his tractor. His crime? Tang Ming-Lin had allowed his foreman to plow land inhabited by endangered species, a federal crime. Specifically, the FWS claimed that Ming-Lin’s foreman had killed two (possibly five) Tipton kangaroo rats and "taken" the habitat of blunt-nosed leopard lizards and San Joaquin kit foxes. The FWS never provided any evidence, but it did demand 363 of Ming-Lin’s 723 acres, $300,000 in fines, and $172,425 to maintain the expropriated land as a wildlife preserve.

The FWS raided Ming-Lin’s offices and slandered his family in the media. Among other outrages, the FWS threatened to deport his family and implicated them in tax fraud and other nefarious schemes, all of which turned out to be untrue. One FWS official even managed to convince local authorities to suspend the immigrant’s driver’s license. In the end, however, the FWS backed down when faced with a jury trial. Tang Ming-Lin’s persecution had sparked a property-rights backlash. Although he admitted to no wrongdoing, Ming-Lin did agree to donate $5,000 to a habitat conservation fund and to stop farming his land until he obtained an ESA permit. This episode awakened people to what the ESA could do to farmers and ranchers.

Yes. 1993. And 1994, and 1995, and 1996, and 1997.... and hundreds of examples every year thereafter. It is still happening, and getting worse to this day.

They have stopped individual building and major development, clearing of brush, etc. Don't even try to mess with anything declared to be a "wetland"! If you don't comply with their rules on your private property, they will simply seize your land! The communistas are achieving their success in broad daylight while folks think all this open space and green corridors are just hunky dory--until it happens on their property.

Poomacha fire update

Posted @ 10:12 PM

With the newest evacuations Thursday night from the Poomacha fire, the evacuation center in Borrego High School has grown to nearly 400 people, with many more people camping outside the school and coming in for meals.

Shelter manager Dan Hoffman of the Red Cross said some people left to return to their homes while new ones came in. Evacuees from Ramona and Julian especially have been frustrated repeatedly for the last few days since they leave believing they can finally return home, only to find the roads blocked again and have to return to the shelter.

Meanwhile, the latest evacuation for the Witch fire in Lake Henshaw and Mesa Grande was ordered Thursday night so firefighters can work a backfire to cut off the flames, said CalFire Division Chief Steve Gasaway.

The Witch and Poomacha fires have met up around Palomar Mountain as officials feared they would, so the firing operation could help slow the combined rage of flames.

The legendary telescope on Palomar remains in danger from fire, but Gasaway said the increase in resources to fight the Poomacha fire has helped bring it down to 30 percent controlled.

“I wouldn’t say it’s out of danger,” said Gasaway. “Things tend to burn better at night. There’s no guarantees.”
