However they rate candidates, I know for a fact that there is NO ONE more pro 2A than Diane Irey-—and she is conservative on every other issue, too. She would have been a fine representative for us—without causing the harm that Murtha is causing.

Feldman accuses the powerful NRA of being in business primarily to raise money for itself and its executives, and of using self-defeating scare tactics to keep its coffers full.

As opposed to these two?

The funny thing is, the NRA succeeds and has kept the hands of gun grabbers like those in Pelosi & Reid's party out of our homes.

Pelosi and Reid, otoh, are pretty pathetic figures when it comes to doing what they promised.

Yes, many times the NRA endorses liberal Dems who are likely to sell out gunowners when a real close vote comes up. That is the trouble with being a single issue conservative organization.

But...the NRA is the big boy in the 2nd Amendment field and they have fought some good fights for us. As for them just being a money raising organization using shrill voiced alarmist rhetoric that charge could much better be applied to GreenPeace and the Sierra Club.

I believe this is true, but the problem with running against an incumbent is the apparatus they have available to them.

For most politicians in the house the first job when elected is to make sure you can be re-elected.

I agree. The NRA has itself as its primary concern.

That's why I am a life member of the GOA (Gun Owners of America.)

Their primary concern is, surprisingly, the Gun Owners of America.

Well, sometimes you just have to stand on principle. Which means I will not belong to any organization that supports pukes like Murtha. As I said up-thread, if the NRA supports Murtha again in ‘08 I will not renew my membership in ‘09. In the meantime, they’ll not get a nickel from me.

I got two calls this week from the NRA trying to raise money. As soon as they heard I’d been laid off “CLICK”.

To the Anti-gun crowd, the GOA is about as potent as a popcorn fart.

It sounds to me like they correctly concluded it was a bad time to hit you up for money...

It takes LOTS of money to go up against an established, far-reaching, widely believed (by idiots, dolts, and other dems/RINOs), and powerful (to the extent that they control the TV news and newspapers, etc.) left-wing, GUN-GRABBING media.

The anti-gun demonRATS in office can shut-up and hide, for the time being, their true intentions regarding guns and the 2nd Amendment, meanwhile, their minions and comrades in the left-wing media can continue the fight, with mind-numbing, meaningless propaganda like this hit-piece on the NRA.

I'm a life benefactor member because I think, generally, the NRA has done a good job for us. At the same time, they are not as aggressive and unyielding as I'd like on some issues, and sometimes, they're just plain wrong on some points (like supporting an A/B-rated dem OVER a similarly rated Republican, which adds to the dem majority who is vehemently anti-gun).

I'm a member because they USUALLY do the right thing, and are the biggest and best game in town when it comes to supporting and defending our rights with real clout in Washington, and in the state houses around the country.

I don't like seeing as many fund raising letters in my mail box as I do, but I FULLY understand it. I contribute when I can, and the rest go in the "circular file". Unlike the Brits, Aussies, Canadians, etc., we American gun owners need to stick together and put our money where our mouth is, to keep the socialists/pacifist, gun-grabbing crowd where they belong, in the "sh*tter" of firearms and Constitutional history in America.

I trust the NRA more than I do the media and politicians.

I like the NRA. They have done so much for gun owners and they really are feared on the hill. Which is enough for me to continue supporting them.
Is it run like a business? I sure hope so.

Typeical WAPO hit piece trying to drive a wedge in the gun owner constituency. Not buying it.

Pro-RKBA Rights splinter groups have even recently caused some very anti-RKBA measures to pass in California.

Gun owners who watch politics at the state levels are taking note of how the California Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA) and Gun Owners of California (GOC) made political missteps by causing a CA Fish & Game commission member to lose his job after years of his supporting them.

The commissioner then turned around and spitefully endorsed the CA 'Microstamping' bill and Lead-Free shot measures that was critical to the CA Governor signing both bills.

Basically, thanks to the frothing fanatics who had no sense of restraint at a critical juncture, California now has two new anti-gun bills thanks to pro-RKBA groups who consider the NRA to be 'sell-outs'.

Because of their stance on many things , including Murtha, the ONLY reason I pay the dues is that it is a requirement to have membership in the local shooting range . In New Jersey these are far and few between .

Wasn't for the NRA you right to own a gun would have been long gone

That is the fact of life

The NRA has good political sense. Much better than others.

but do I want Shara Brady speaking for me?

There is a bit of truth in it. The NRA has been behind many so-called “sensible gun laws”.
