Some people prefer to live in a rural setting; if I have to carry to protect myself from wild life, it beats having to carry to protect myself from wild animals (of the human variety)...
“The owner brought the hot dog to the party. Thanks for the snack, its probably one of the few benefits the wolves get for the encroachment of civilization. I always liked the way the residents fed the mountain lions in Boulder Canyon. Get over it or get out of their domain.”
It is not “their” domain. WE are the top animal in the food chain. They live only because we wish them to live.
That is the brutal truth. Two hundred years ago, you could argue differently. Today, man is indisputably dominant everywhere.
While we don't have attacks on humans here in Louisiana, the black bear is creating ever increasing problems with destruction of property and crops. A large male torn the front porch of our deer camp to pieces, not to mention the acres of corn that he knocked down.
At least they are studying taking them off of protected status here and allowing limited hunts. I promise that when the bears start realizing that they can and will be killed by a human, they will avoid contact at every opportunity.
Amen.
Wow, right out of a Jack London novel.
Big deal, I have lost several cats recently to wolves, I see them from time to time and I am about 50 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska.
I need to check out my scopes anyway on my Bushmaster.
Might want to dig out a pistol as well. Sometimes a rifle just takes too long to get off your back pack...
Out side my front door? I think a hicap mag of 5.56 would be better than a clip of 10mm. But I do have both. Sorry to hear about the dog but wolves are really becoming a dangerous problem here. I heard there is a bounty out now on them.
My son had a friend of his shoot a black bear - inside thier house here in Anchorage.
A full magazine of 40S&W.
The bear went into the kitchen, trashed it & them expired.
What a mess. Next time, he said he would use a shotgun, might be less to clean up. I doubt it.
“The Lesages property is right on the edge of civilization, Young said.”
This isn't suburbs in the Milwaukee sense of the word.
Nor would most of us who choose to live in Alaska want to live in the suburbs of Milwaukee (where nearly every one else wants a say in how you live your life. We like it just fine here where most of our neighbors are content to mind their own business and let you mind yours (and shoot the occasional wolves or bears that attack your pets or livestock)...
BTW, regarding the "global warming", I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said, "Alaskans for Global Warming". Not sure I agree - then there would be nothing left to keep out the 'riff-raff'...
The North Pole has subdivisions? Man, urban sprawl really is getting out of hand!
There are subdivisions in North Pole (about 12-15 miles south of Fairbanks), Alaska and it appears we have wolves wondering through from time to time. I knew about bears and moose which are also dangerous but I thought wolves kind of kept a wider margin (until I heard this on the radio the other morning)...
it’s a dog eat dog world
lap dogs are eagle bait
There was something about not getting the quota in some game management areas even with the bounty.
Apparently you’ve never been to North Pole.
The dominence ends roughly a half mile off the Alaska hiway up there.
There are subdivisions all over the Fairbanks area, maybe eight thousand of them. There are also illegal lot splits and many lack legal access. If you are planning to purchase a lot, be clear about easements and access first. Platted roads are preferable to cat trails.
