Thompson Accuses Romney Of Trying To "Buy South Carolina"
CBS News ^

Posted on 11/06/2007 2:31:05 PM PST by jaybeegee

Fred Thompson stepped up his attacks against Mitt Romney today in South Carolina on two fronts: his immigration stance and his campaign financing.

“Governor Romney supported the immigration bill that I opposed back before it became a controversial issue,” Thompson said, referring to the failed immigration bill put forth earlier this year. “The governor once again has changed his position.”

Thompson told a packed lunchtime crowd at the Beef O’Brady’s restaurant in Ft. Mill that Romney was trying to buy his way to the nomination. "Governor, you can’t buy South Carolina. You can’t even rent it.”

Some polls show Thompson leading the Republican pack in South Carolina, despite not yet airing any ads there.

“The governor of Massachusetts has now apparently put in $20 million of his personal fortune, and spent a good chunk of it in South Carolina. I haven’t bought one TV ad yet, one radio ad yet, and yet I seem to be in the lead,” he said. “So from a management standpoint, I think I‘m getting a little bit more for my money right now.”

Good to see Thompson on the attack. Calling out Romney on his liberal record is good news.

Funny that the media has started to go away from FDT as he gets tougher on illegal alienism

I agree. The bogus ARG poll of several weeks back look bought and paid for.

Thompson’s internal polling was also mentioned to have exposed Romney’s press releases on SC support as unadulterated BS.

Great shot of FDT with the Marine.

That Marine looks like he could press 250 lbs while singing ‘Halls of Montezuma’ without breaking a sweat.

Well, it sure is evident that Thompson isn’t trying to win South Carolina.

At least not very hard.

The fact that a Mormon from Massachusetts is in striking distance there ought to show as much. And now he’s complaining that someone is outworking him and putting his money where his mouth is.

But hey, he’s named Fred and was in lots of picture shows. That should be enough.

Priceless.

Yep, Mitt has been trying to bribe the state of South Carolina to vote for him. Fred hasn't had to spend a dime and is leading.

Guess what happens when Fred decides to really advertise?

You got it.....Mitt gets flushed.

Why is it you anti-Freds think that movies are all Fred has done? Are you not aware of anything else but the acting? Are you that limited in your thinking and research?

How lame.

Fred should pass some campaign finance laws to stop this sort of thing.

Fred is not in Congress right now. Maybe you should go back to your bottle for a bit...ok?

It is too bad that Fred does not see fit to spend $650 per voter for some stupid straw polls. Maybe then he would have more appeal to the savvy politicos out there....

Carl Cameron on Brit's show tonight cherry picked a poll that showed Romney leading.
