President is happy to govern by veto
HEARST NEWSPAPERS ^ | December 20, 2007 | HELEN THOMAS

WASHINGTON -- President Bush is feeling newly empowered by threatening to veto legislation approved by the Democratic-controlled Congress.

The threats seem to be working with the lawmakers. They are rolling over very easily as they rush to get home for Christmas or to catch up on re-election campaigning.

When he had the backing of a Republican Congress, the president vetoed only one bill in his first six years in office; that bill would have expanded federal support for stem cell research.

But right now he is on a roll, getting what he wants without a veto pen but merely making the threat.

He was able to derail the Democrats yearlong attempt to set a timetable for a troop withdrawal from Iraq. Just before the holiday recess, the Senate approved an additional $70 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan -- with no strings attached -- which the president will sign.

WAAAAAH! The Left can't beat President Bush! He's too smart for us! Maybe he should tie one hand behind his back, give up the veto power -- then maybe we could beat him! WAAAAAAAAH!

She's pathetic.

Kind of like the "threat" of a filibuster causing some folks to cave in.

I voted for W, but at times he seems he was more a representative of the Mexican people than of U.S. citizens.

Wish I was wrong, but I’m not.

“Maybe the Prez is a representative of the people?”

According to Pelosi, he’s out of touch with her made up polls.

Someday the president may learn we have three equal branches of government and that Congress has a check on executive power.

Someday Democrats like Helen Thomas will learn that citizens in flyover country don't agree with their far leftist views.

Seriously, this editorial is too funny. Poor Helen is making the case that "stupid fratboy" Bush has Congressional Democrats' testicles in a lockbox.

You voted for the Democrats, Helen. Demand they get their testicles back and use them.

This new omnibus spending bill strips out the border fence. It’s history.

I agree with you. Bush will gladly sign this bill. It meats all his objectives, and what I mented to start with here, was one of them IMO.

It’s nice to know he found his veto pen, having lost it for over six years.

I was about to lend him mine.

Bush isn't getting what he wants, but he's able to stop the worst of what he doesn't want.

He's forcing the Democrats in Congress to negotiate with him and the Republicans in Congress to pass legislation. That's how our government was designed to work.

The President with the lowest veto rate in the modern era is “ruling by veto”. Uh-huh. Another set of lies trotted out as truth by the Left.

Why wasn’t the president using his veto during his first term? He could have saved us a lot of money.

I voted for W twice.
