Barack Obama races to 10-point lead as Hillary lashes out
The Times ^ | 1/6/07 | Sarah Baxter, Concord, New Hampshire

BARACK OBAMA, the 46-year-old senator aiming to become America’s first black president, has stormed into a 10-point lead over Hillary Clinton in this week’s critical New Hampshire primary, threatening to send her campaign into meltdown.

The Rasmussen survey, which was carried out the day after Obama’s victory in last Thursday’s Iowa caucuses, put his support at 37% in New Hampshire, compared with 27% for Clinton.

The poll of 510 likely Democratic voters signalled a further swing away from the 60-year-old former first lady, whose campaign portrayed her as the “inevitable” victor until she was beaten into third place in Iowa.

Yesterday thousands of people queued in the snow to hear Obama speak in a high school gymnasium, reflecting the excitement building around his campaign in the run-up to the primary on Tuesday.

As the Democratic rivals prepared for a televised debate last night, Clinton accused Obama of peddling “false hopes”. She said: “It is hard to know exactly where he stands. People need to ask that.” Obama emphasised his broad objective of uniting people in pursuit of change. “There is no destiny we cannot fulfil. That has been the promise of this campaign,” he said.

The Clinton camp is divided about how negative to go against Obama, but the fight is getting dirtier as the stakes rise.

Melanie Levesque, a New Hampshire state representative and a member of the African-Americans For Hillary group said: “I'm very concerned that you can’t state [Obama’s] middle name . . . and his past life.” She confirmed she was referring to Hussein, Obama’s Muslim middle name, and his use of drugs as a young man.

Recriminations have begun in Clinton’s campaign over her failure to create a forward-looking message and her reliance on Bill Clinton.

Victory in New Hampshire could give Obama the momentum to wrap up the nomination on February 5, when more than 20 states will vote.

Apparently these reporters don’t know what superdelegates are and how they are already committed to HRC. I forgot about this aspect of the democrat nomination process (in place since the McGovern debacle) but there is a recent FR post about its relevance here. HRC has an ace up her sleeve yet to play. I doubt things will be wrapped up by Feb 5 quite as neatly as this article concludes.

You could tell from the first sentence that this article is full of baloney. Everyone knows that Bill Clinton was America’s first black president!

Recriminations have begun in Clinton’s campaign over her failure...

Didn't Hillary just purchase a Guillotine?

"Superdelegates will not buck a populus [sic] trend."

She has several publicly committed to her, and leads the current delegate total by a substantial margin. The very purpose of the superdelegate is to buck a trend. It was put in place after McGovern to prevent such a folly again.

It is not as simple as you might believe: Click to be enlightened by this hours old FR thread.

Everyone knows that Bill Clinton was America’s first black president!

Bubba must really be hurting, knowing that he can't outcharm the man who might be America's REAL first (half)black Presidential candidate.

I think Bubba is actually having a blast out there on the campaign trail again. Just like old times—getting in front of a crowd and talking about himself. Ah, the good old days!

Perhaps I need to dig a bit more into these posts, but why cannot trained journalists realize that Barrack Not That Huessein Obama is a mulatto? What if Barrack were to speak of his white heritage? What would the drive by media have to say about this turn of events?

The media would nod sagely and ignore it.
Besides, there’s no benefit to him talking about his white heritage (I’m assuming you’re correct that he’s part white, since I don’t know).

That is good for us, actually. If Obama is winning most of the delegates through the primary process. but Hilary wins the nomination due to the super delegates (the establishment insiders), the rank and file Dems will hate her even more. While they may not vote for the Pub candidate, they will not vote and work for her, either.

All I have to say is that if O. Hussein Barrack is smart he won’t offer the VP to Hitlery...that could be a fatal mistake...

If she or her delegates did what you suggest and go directly against the grain of the primary voters, there would be a riot at the convention. She cannot play “power politics” any longer without alienating the people, and that is what’s causing her rapid descent. The jig is up.

This isn’t directly a propos to your post but I’m curious as to how many FReepers share my amusement. The Democratic party is the great practitioner of racial, ethnic, and gender-identity politics. You see innumerable “caucus” factions in Congress, too many to cite here. Now that the primary has come down to a contest between a black male and a female, why don’t we hear from all the feminist groups? What about the black lobbyists who demand that a black is entitled to be president after so many years of oppression? And why not a black FEMALE? And Richardson can’t be left out because we need a Hispanic! And Hillary is not just a female but a WHITE(!) female. Have you noticed that all the MSM utter nary a peep - because they’re all liberals? It seems that it’s better to keep the balkanization of American politics in a discrete PC silence if a white male can’t be traduced and castigated as part of the “establishment.” The silence speaks volumes!

“I'm very concerned that you can’t state [Obama’s] middle name . . . and his past life.”

You can't?

She confirmed she was referring to Hussein, Obama’s Muslim middle name, and his use of drugs as a young man.

She certainly seems to have been able to, quite easily in fact. Liberalism really is a mental disorder.

We have our own problems, but I can’t help but giggle at the thought of Hillary turning purple as all her glorious dreams of ultimate power crumble into dust.

Having said that, it’s not a matter of “will things get dirty” it’s more like “how dirty is she willing to get”... and my gut feeling is that she will use every nasty trick in the book and then write a few extra chapters.

Pass the popcorn. This should be fun.

Did you read the article? Check out the comments too. The gig may be up, MAY being the operative word. I do not underestimate the Clintonian will to power and to play every card dealt, riot or no. You are of the apparent opinion she will go “gentlemanly” and cede the nomination without playing every last option. Popcorn stocks. BUY.
