NASHVILLE Republican Fred Thompson is out of the presidential race, but that isnt stopping some top Republican officials from continuing to support the former U.S. senator in the Feb. 5 GOP primary.
Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville, is running as an at-large delegate for Mr. Thompson. Senate Republican Leader Mark Norris, R-Collierville, is running as a Thompson delegate in the 7th Congressional District.
And both are hoping to get to the Republican National Convention this summer as delegates.
During a press availability with reporters this week, Lt. Gov. Ramsey told reporters he has been getting calls from various GOP campaigns seeking his support since Mr. Thompsons flagging campaign officially fizzled.
Obviously, Chip Saltsman, whos with Mike Huckabee, called about 30 minutes after Fred was out, and I asked him what took so long, Lt. Gov. Ramsey joked of Mr. Saltsman, a former Tennessee Republican Party chairman who is Mr. Huckabees campaign manager.
Yesterday, Lt. Gov. Ramsey continued, I got a phone call that came up, unknown number, blocked caller ID. And usually I dont answer that because its usually one of you all (reporters), to be perfectly honest. ... But I answered anyway, and (the voice) said, Hello, this is Mitt Romney.
The lieutenant governor said, Im going to try to stay out of it at least for right now. Ill be behind whoever wins.
Sen. Norris then noted, Im a delegate for Fred Thompson, and Im still on the ballot.
Asked if he were encouraging people to still vote for Mr. Thompson, Sen. Norris grinned and said, you bet. Im a delegate.
Then came a confession from Lt. Gov. Ramsey: And I am (a delegate) too. So I will too. I'm a statewide delegate. I'm sure I still will. Even though he's out, I will, at this time.
Mr. Thompson remains on the ballot and can still win delegates if he wins a certain percentage of the vote.
Im in MD and I am writing in FRED THOMPSON, my only choice other than Duncan Hunter but I think a FT vote is worth more.
I don’t know, but a pic of John Wayne in a coonskin cap is just hilarious. Almost as funny as when he played a barbarian in some forgettable movie.
Mitt socialist????????????....you mean Hillary, Edwards, Obama or Huckabee.
Colonel Bowie, I presume?
Davey Crockett would think so too .
Mitt socialist????????????....you mean Hillary, Edwards, Obama or Huckabee.
They would be of equal value to the Dems.
He was a mongolian or something...too funny
No, I mean the author of the only Socialist State forced health care payment plan ever signed into law in America.
Yeah, that was it!
Why are you so eager to jettison FRed Thompson?
who do you favor, (the very fashionable...the choice of $hrillary/DNC/Liberal MSM :) McPain/HuckaLiar? :D
btw: A. Lincoln wasn't the Prime GOP Candidate in 1860, He was a "Compromise" Candidate....please, look it up....its' not fashion, its called, h_i_s_t_o_r_y....history. :)
Right, we must vote for the candidate who is 3 degrees above pond scum because his opponent is 2 degrees above pond scum.
Yep, makes perfect sense. - To a liberal.
This story was orchestrated by the pros at the McCain campaign. The polling is clear that Thompson’s people went to Romney. It helps them to dangle a carrot of hope out there that Thompson is not 100% done.
Thompson’s letter of withdrawl was brief, direct, and unequivocal. Let him be.
I'm generally not in favor of protest votes, but for the first time in my life -- and for the same reason -- I'm sorely tempted this year to follow your lead.
“...when he played a barbarian in some forgettable movie.”
How about when he played the centurion? “Truly, this man was the son of God.” Talk about miscasting.
Fred is still on the Missouri Ballot as well.
Damn, I missed that one!
Where’d you get the tagline from? My wife heard it today on one of the Fox Business shows (from Wayne Rogers) and I know that Wayne didn’t come up with that on his own—the writers are still on strike!
