NASHVILLE Republican Fred Thompson is out of the presidential race, but that isnt stopping some top Republican officials from continuing to support the former U.S. senator in the Feb. 5 GOP primary.
Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville, is running as an at-large delegate for Mr. Thompson. Senate Republican Leader Mark Norris, R-Collierville, is running as a Thompson delegate in the 7th Congressional District.
And both are hoping to get to the Republican National Convention this summer as delegates.
During a press availability with reporters this week, Lt. Gov. Ramsey told reporters he has been getting calls from various GOP campaigns seeking his support since Mr. Thompsons flagging campaign officially fizzled.
Obviously, Chip Saltsman, whos with Mike Huckabee, called about 30 minutes after Fred was out, and I asked him what took so long, Lt. Gov. Ramsey joked of Mr. Saltsman, a former Tennessee Republican Party chairman who is Mr. Huckabees campaign manager.
Yesterday, Lt. Gov. Ramsey continued, I got a phone call that came up, unknown number, blocked caller ID. And usually I dont answer that because its usually one of you all (reporters), to be perfectly honest. ... But I answered anyway, and (the voice) said, Hello, this is Mitt Romney.
The lieutenant governor said, Im going to try to stay out of it at least for right now. Ill be behind whoever wins.
Sen. Norris then noted, Im a delegate for Fred Thompson, and Im still on the ballot.
Asked if he were encouraging people to still vote for Mr. Thompson, Sen. Norris grinned and said, you bet. Im a delegate.
Then came a confession from Lt. Gov. Ramsey: And I am (a delegate) too. So I will too. I'm a statewide delegate. I'm sure I still will. Even though he's out, I will, at this time.
Mr. Thompson remains on the ballot and can still win delegates if he wins a certain percentage of the vote.
A woman at work emailed it to me - thought I’d get a kick out of it. I tried to find out where it came from without any luck. I prefer to know who I’m stealing from. 8^)
I’m not that picky about who I steal taglines from (though I made my current one up myself), I was just curious. :D
I flipped from Fred to Obambi .
IM WRITING HIM IN!! I will have at least cast my vote in good conscience. I think instead of wasting our time on the McCain/Huckabee trolls we should be talking to those who say they are sitting things out to write in Fred Thompson. Its SHAMEFUL for them to BRAG about staying home when so many of our men and women have DIED so they have the luxury of casting their vote. I have NO admiration for those who say they will not vote for anyone just because they didnt get the candidate they wanted. I WILL VOTE...just not the way the GOP/MSM/CountryClubbers wants me to...
An actual vote for hillary is marking her name on the ballot. Anyone who says a vote for one candidate throws the election for another is irrational and a crybaby.
Who I vote for is my own decision.
I vote because of convictions and beliefs.
I don’t vote just for the sake of voting because I can.
And as much as I have a right to vote, I also have a right not to vote.
If anyone gets incensed because I decided not to vote, they should give me a better candidate. I don’t have to lower expectations. I don’t have to settle. And I don’t have to vote for one candidate just because someone else says they are better than who I would like to vote for.
I’m with you too!
It is the only logical and principled option for a true conservative!
Wow. That was very well put. Bravo!
I would only add:
“I do not have to vote for the nominee merely because he has an (R) after his name.
I like yours, too, BTW. At the very least, a clumsy attempt at a little “tongue” by the swimmer. Hope you didn’t just eat dinner.
So write in who YOU want as President. Youre not voting at all automaticlly disqualifies you from any discussion of issues. Sorry, but thems the facts. If you want to go ahead and not vote, thereby p*ssing on the sacrifices of those who worked to give you the freedom to vote, go right ahead, but Id better not see your name on FR after the Nov. elections. You will have no credibility with me or other FR who have worked hard to keep up the battle.
I did just eat dinner but I managed to keep it down, thanks! lol
I already voted for Fred in early voting in Florida. I don’t regret it one bit:)
Received that as an email joke about three weeks ago.
Not voting = SHAME SHAME SHAME!!!
If you can live with that, fine...but you certainly wont have any respect from me.
Evidently, I don’t get the good emails. :D
Not voting because you’re too lazy, or too stupid to cast an intelligent vote is p*ssing on sacrifices. Not voting because there is no acceptable candidate and you refuse to take part in a circus is a legitimate form of protest. As a veteran, I believe I’ve earned the right NOT to vote if that’s what I choose. However, I will write in FDT in November if he is not on the ballot.
Kinda like the Alamo.
Tactical Loss, Stratigic Victory.
That might be stretching the analogy...but then again, maybe not. Depends on what you mean by “strategic victory”.
I can see voting for him in the primary, especially if his name is still on the ballot, as it is in AZ, but voting for him in the general... you may as well vote for the witch or the communist.
