Why many conservatives can't vote for McCain
The Everett Herald ^ | February 10, 2008 | Mona Charen

I posted a squib on the National Review Web site about a robo call I received from John McCain. (Virginia's primary is Tuesday.) The call stressed that he would, if elected, be a down-the-line limited government conservative who would never raise taxes, would defend life, would enforce immigration laws and would win the war on terror. The candidate is trying, I said, to meet conservatives "more than halfway." The response of readers was, shall we say, emphatic.

One lady wrote that she would never vote for him as "He is the most disloyal, ill-tempered man and he brings out the worse in all of us. ..." Several readers made the point that after decades of suffering abuse at McCain's hands, conservatives are not going to fall into line for him now, no matter what blandishments he offers.

I know how they feel. The problem with McCain is not just that he strays. George Bush has strayed from conservatism, too. So has Fred Thompson. Certainly Mitt Romney has as well. But Sen. McCain has a knack for saying things in just the tones and accents that liberals prefer. In 2000, he condemned the late Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson as "agents of intolerance." In 2004, when Sen. John Kerry was getting his comeuppance from the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, vets who had known him during the war and couldn't remain silent as the Democratic nominee distorted his war record, McCain weighed in by calling the Swift Boaters "dishonorable and dishonest." When the Bush Administration was being vilified as a nest of Torquemadas for using waterboarding on three occasions, McCain came forward to condemn waterboarding as torture.

Has anyone even considered a prayer chain asking God to raise up a conservative candidate for this election cycle.

Good idea. My "comfort prayer" has been "Thy will be done" for the past few weeks.

The Hildebeast is a frightening prospect in the White House. Absolutely frightening. And, that is even worse if she has a DhimmiRat majority in either the House or the Senate. The shopping list of socialist causes that would be visited on the American people would be horrendous.
Her Thighness would also have, perhaps, as many as four SCOTUS appointments; enough to cause potentially irrepairable harm to the nation.

Barak Obama can’t be counted as any better. His resume is short, but his voting record has been well reported, and he comes up no better than Ms. Klintoon.

There’s still time to force a brokered convention, which I would view as the last opportunity for conservative voices to shape the GOP. If that fails, then a viable third party makes sense. The Libertarian Party and the Constitution Party could be the start, IMO. It’s unlikely that all conservatives agree on every point, so SOME degree of compromise on platform and planks would be necessary. But the bedrock foundational principles of a Conservative movement are pretty well represented...smaller government, fiscal responsibility, strong national defense, border and immigration enforcement and control, RKBA, respect for the individual, equality of opportunity over equality of outcome, tax reform, etc.

IF the conservative agenda is still the agenda of the majority of Americans; and, IF the GOP abandons that agenda; THEN, it stands to reason that the majority of Americans should embrace a true conservative party.

This is not the election cycle to boycott the most important responsibility of citizens in a free nation...voting. POTUS is not the only race in play. There are hundreds of state and local races and issues that demand a conservative voice, a conservative response, and a conservative victory.

Why Many Conservatives Can’t Vote for McCain? Because they are single minded and have blinders and refuse to see a bigger picture? Because in reality many are simply giant toddlers who are throwing their tantrums because they didn’t get their way?

"Repentance is a hard thing." You are so right, and it would be assuring to see some repentance by McCain. A good repentive step for him to get my vote would be for him to initiate legislation right now repealing McCain-Feingold. I will not vote for McCain as long as that assault on our fundamental liberties stands as law. If he can pass it then he can UNpass it. That would be a sincere first step in shoring up the conservative base, and he missed that opportunity in his speech at CPAC where he didn’t show a whole lot of repentance.

Why many conservatives can't vote for McCain

Uh maybe because of things like this......

The Scorpion and the Frog

A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The frog asks, "How do I know you won't sting me?" The scorpion says, "Because if I do, I will die too."

The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream, the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown, but has just enough time to gasp "Why?"

Replies the scorpion: "It's my nature..."

(hint: McInsane AIN'T the frog)

Yay! Another "grow up" post! It's been at least five minutes since I saw the last one, and I was beginning to think that you CICOs were becoming tired with it. Good to see that you haven't!

You party men are so d*mned creative. Sheesh.

Tony Snow was so great at CPAC yesterday I really think he should run for president. I wonder if he can be drafted. Or maybe he can be persuaded to run in 2012.

Nice guy, fairly conservative, but too much of a wimp.

I was ALWAYS disappointed when he sat in for Rush.

Yes, and I also know that HE is always willing to give us another chance to repent.

Individually, not as a country.

McCain nearly joined the Democrat party twice in the last seven years. On big issues he votes with the Dems. In fact, in his heart he is a Dem.

How’s that for the Big Picture?

Your post makes sense.

I’ve been back and forth in my mind on what I will do in November if it’s McLame. My initial thought is for the troops, and that McLame will not trash all that they have accomplished right away by withdrawing them (like Hitlery and Hussien Obama plan on doing).

However, if McLame closes Gitmo and signs an Amnesty bill that keeps our borders wide open, that pretty much trashes the accomplishments of the troops to keep America safe from the islamic terror.

Now, if Hitlary or Hussien Obama does those things, the GOP would have something to fight against. If McLame does it, how does the Republican party fight against the person they put into office?

It’s looking like a choice between electing someone who will stab America in the heart from the front or one who will stab America in the heart from the back. The question then becomes which action is easier/better to attack after the ‘stab in the heart’ occurs?

I’m thinking now, that it’s better if the Democrat gets elected over McLame.

It’s always easy to point out where someone else needs to repent. Looking at myself is where it gets hard.
