Free Republic Update: Pings, Tabs, Time and More

Posted on 04/08/2008 3:05:23 AM PDT by John Robinson

Just installed a quick change to the pings page. It brings it more in line with what it is expected to look like. One particular change is the "greening" of comments from you, to more easily differentiate something you've posted vs. something posted to you. Not so sure about the way that looks, so please give me feedback.

With this update the tabs on the pings page get memory: the page will remember the last tab you have selected. This tab memory will be extended across the board. I'm currently reworking the 'tag' index pages to accommodate this.

I'm also trying something new with regard to time. We will try using your computer's clock to set the time zone. This uses JavaScript, if you don't have JavaScript enabled you'll see "04/08/2008 2:31:48 AM PDT" (etc), but if you do you'll probably see something more like "Tuesday, April 08, 2008 5:31:48 AM" [for an eastern time zone.] I'm leaving it up to your computer to format the time stamp, so your experience may vary. These new time stamps will be extended across the board as I update the hundreds of locations where the time is displayed.

The very next update (probably a day or two away) will stomp out the last of the "More" bugs, enhance the search function, and quite possibly extend the 'manage blocks' page with new blocks and a better interface to select them.

In future updates we'll have the ability to add multiple pages to our profiles. And each page will be versioned-- you'll be able to restore previous versions of a page should something go horribly, horribly wrong. This is actually a precursor to a larger project, which will allow multiple people to collaborate on website projects. Think of a profile page on steroids, complete with custom sidebars, an upload area (images, possibly sound clips) and whatnot.

On the less visible side of things, I will be consolidating the internals quite a bit... we've managed to gather similar functionality across a large number of programs. I'd very much like to tidy that up. For example, there are 4 or 5 different 'thread programs' used on the site, each with their own posting programs, etc (example: the state boards.) It would make my day if I could bundle up all these distinct functions into one place. The presentation-- how you will see things-- may be different for each type of thread, but the underlying data structures and logic (and routines like spell check) will be consolidated. This will be a huge change to the internals (if only because I'll be fiddling with 50+ million comments in our database.) Once that is implemented we'll have editable comments and articles.

Anyway, somebody shut me up, I'm rambling now.

Update: Preview Site

By popular demand, I will attempt to maintain a beta site to demonstrate new bleeding-edge features without affecting the regular forum too harshly.

Currently have the new index code (aka Latest Posts) installed. Tabs have memory, next time you visit you'll see the last tab you had visited. Additionally, each tab on the index page remembers its brevity setting. So you can have articles with text, and activity and comments with headers only, if that is what you prefer.

I moved the "RSS" link and sidebar control (now called "Add to My Page") down to the bottom of the page. Just really didn't need to take up precious top real-estate for those things.

Currently "Add to My Page" is non-functional, you'll get the manage blocks page but the current listing will not be added as a block. And some of the "More" links are still bugged. Those are the next tasks.

I like the different color to differentiate the posts by me and to me. But I have eye problems, and the green is a little light and vibrates. Could you make it a little darker shade?

Also, when I do the search I always like time to be the parameter, not relevance.

The one thing I would love someone to come up with is a search by date. So if we wanted to see the posts on say, 9/13/01, we could put the date in and get the articles posted on that date. That would be SO wonderful.

Thanks for everything you do.

I like but hyperlinks don't show up underlined or in blue/red on the ping page.

Several things. Our server software (that which everything this site is built upon rests) had become incredibly outdated and needed to be rebuilt. It was an incredible undertaking (three weeks in the making) porting the Free Republic software to the new server software. Some things were just easier to rewrite than to port.

Additionally, I had embedded SQL (our data language of choice) and HTML in all the programs the site uses. On the one hand, it is both quick to create and run software built using these practices. And on the other, it is incredibly (nearly impossible) to maintain this jumbled mess. I decided it was far time to start moving SQL/HTML and assorted non-code from the code files and into their own little containers. When doing this, I essentially must rewrite much of the HTML. On top of this, moving the SQL out of the code and abstracting for maintenance' sake caused my entire data model to change, further necessitating the need to rewrite the HTML.

And of course when you get a programmer/tweaker type like me in the mood to rewrite HTML, inevitably things will change. I can't help myself. Heh.

And finally, most importantly, I'm trying to accomplish some very neat features. Barely any of those-- that which I really want to acccomplish here-- have been written as of yet, but I have been laying the groundwork for all of it, sneaking bits into each update. Very good stuff is around the corner.

Either your browser or your operating system’s locale is set to Korean, if that’s what that is. I have no idea, I’m just instructing your browser to display a date in the ‘default locale’.

Thanks again for all your work, John. Love the new option of automatic "New Posts" clearing. A touch of “pink” on the site may be pretty. ;)

Would sure prefer to have the OPTION of the green vs not bolded. Would let those with headaches opt out but give those of us who greatly prefer the green to still have that option.

Thanks for all your efforts.

Uhhhh ... ok ... if you say so.
I'm no geek so I followed you on a very superficial level ... I guess it's sorta' like trying to track down why my battery isn't charging ... and deciding to chrome the parts I see that don't really look good.

Might as well bore it out, too.

Thanx, John.

It’s somewhat different than IE, Firefox, etc. So get ready for a change. Doing a little research on their online help/support pages will be of help, also. It took me a couple hours to get a general hang of it, but now that I’ve done so, I like it.

One thing you can do, and maybe a knowledgeable Freeper may be able to help, is to define a custom style sheet for Free Republic and override our settings with whatever you like.

Style sheets are pretty neat. Eventually we'll have some predefined choices, such as a "large fonts" version, different color schemes, different fonts, etc, and some type of way to mix and match-- and this would be a good place for something like the greening effect to be ungreened.

I may have to try that out and see how it looks.

As it stands now, I just sort of ignore the green since I’m not really interested in rereading what I wrote.

All in all the changes have been great, they just take a little getting used to.

John:

I just noticed when doing a spell check on a post I just made to this thread, there’s no apparent way to add a word to my personal dictionary. There’s the drop-down list for questionable words, but no option to add. The word that came up was ‘online’.

Something to think about?

Any chance you could add China, India, European Union and United Nations to the listed Topic options?

And Iran too, please?

Thanks for your kind words.

Certainly, prayers for Vanya, as well. If you want something more focused, you can let me know how so by FREEPMAIL, if you wish.

Lord, may Vanya know you as ultimate authority; ultimate Love; ultimate sanity; ultimate kindness; ultimate thoughtfulness; ulimate peace; ultimate direction. May he delight to do your will, oh, Lord. May he learn your priorities as life, breath, his all in all.

May he learn confidence in you as better than life. May he learn the joy of your heart and the laughter of your peace. May he know deeper and deeper that RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU is more than the whole world. May he lay aside every distraction from your highest in his life. May he purpose to please you above his own comforts and pleasures.

May Vanya know because he knows because he knows because he knows that You Love him beyond words. May he have a healed heart, spirit, mind, body in every respect and may all his relationships be clear(ed), intimate in your love; according to your priorities and tasks for him day by day.

May any anger, frustrations, resentments be repented of, surrendered, released. May he walk in conscious and deep acceptance of all you lay on his daily plate as fitting growth, gift, mercy and blessings for him. May he rise in your Spirit by Grace, Mercy, your Blood and power into the place that you have for him day by day.

And, Lord may the above be true for his Brother, Ben, as well.

In Your Precious Name, Lord. Amen.

Morning, John.

Beautiful work to this point (Kudos from a programmer who spent 25 years developing software)

This is a bug report:

In your beta software, looking at the pings, they angle down and to the right, eventually becoming illegible:

John, years back we were able to do HTML for scrolling something across the page and then it was taken away. Can that be put back in? Makes for interesting Profile pages.

Actually, I’d like a Today’s Toons link at the top with all the other such. That’s mostly what I search for.
