The new format for browsing comments includes the entire reply, as opposed to the old format, which had only the titles of the comments. The new way presents several problems: First, because of images, it takes longer to load. Secondly, because of long URLs posted in these replies, all text scrolls off the edge of the screen, making it very difficult to read. Third, it's harder to get a sense of what the hot threads are, because there are fewer per page. Fourth, if someone hasn't read the article, the reply makes no sense, so there's no good reason to have the full comment posted.
Just an observation.
http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/*/index?brevity=brief
Here ya go - it’s easy to miss the brevity thingie below the tabs, so you can click on the above link.
Mine doesn't.
Are you logged in?
It's presenting the way I've always had it.
I wonder if perhaps you've selected something different in your preferences?
You’re right—I completely overlooked that pale link. Thanks!
Unfortunately, I can't tell you exactly where on the browsing page you'll find Brevity. It depends on if you have the sections (Breaking News, Extended News, etc.) on the left or right. But you should see it somewhere in the upper right(ish) part of your screen. Not at the very top, but just under the bar that shows the fund raising progress.
If you select “Headers” it does not give the whole comment.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!
I just didn’t notice the link below the ones on the left. I don’t think there’s any way to set a preference for this format, but it’s OK, as long as it’s possible to select it manually.
Yes, please oh please.
Go to the top of the comments find "Brevity: « Headers » | Text "
Click headers
Can we do this. Yes we can!
go back to xp vista sucks
Lucky Free Republic is an amateur technical operation. Even though people contribute, FR availability is awful and the constant tinkering with format is ..well.. not smart. It’s a mom and pop. It is what it is.
In every love affair there are issues. In FR case, people running it should stick to fund raising and hire technical people to provide service.
In comments, Look above on the right side, after brevity it has HEADERS. Click on headers and it will be in brief format.
Doesn’t make sense but it works.
XP ain’t that much better, too many compatibility issues.

Nothing’s changed in this regard.
FYI ping.
I agree with everything. Much, much harder for my old eyes to read.
Since that’s the way you feel, why don’t you take it upon yourself to send the Robinsons the money to hire the pros?
Hello?
John Robinson is an excellent programmer as is his dad JimRob.
They are as fine a “techincal people” as you’d ever want working in any high class professional organization and role.
Flip comments without research and awareness are . . .
silly flip comments.
Sigh.
I was trying to think of a way of saying that. You did it better than I might have.
that is actually a setting, not a default
Check your settings
You need to find another site ... of course, I suspect you have little love for FR to begin with.
As for me and my house, FR is the absolute best website that exists. I can’t even begin to fathom how to navigate any of the others.
Thanks, John Rob, and Jim Rob.
I’d be satisfied if there was a “home” page link I could use instead of typing in “http://www.freerepublic.com/home.htm" to get the the home page.
You sound bitter. Cling to your joystick and hope for the best.
God..you would think I said the pope wore a funny hat or something. FR is a nice website. Happy now?
I know you said please and all but what right does people have telling the owner of this website how to run it?
[off my soapbox]
Hows this:
John tried to make sweeping changes to bring FR to bring it to more contemporary technologies/design but the community had a huge hissy fit and John was forced to revert back. John and Jim are VERY technical but because of the vocal minority, moving forward isnt feasible.
And get rid of the Blue color titles...black for me.
AMEN! AMEN! AMEN!
I frequent 2 websites that have comparable 1+ million unique visitors per month . . . FR and
There’s no comparison. ATS has a crackerjack set of 3 founders at the top who are serious about refining and advancing the site—have had ads for a long time . . . and have now a set of investors pouring money into it as well.
It is STILL very klunky to navigate.
The pages are dreary in their greyness. The pages are cluttered to the max.
It’s such a pain to navigate that I post there infrequently and spend a relatively short amount of time there because compared to FR, it’s about a 10,000% pain compared to the easy pleasure FR is.
PRAISE GOD FOR JOHN AND JIM. JOHN’S PROGRAMMING AND SENSIBILITIES ARE EXCELLENT. He’s a great Jr psychologist as well.
So far, the only problem I have is that the threads are harder to read than before and harder to keep separated visually. The titles are too small and the type in the body too big. There isn’t enough space in between each to separate them either. I thought the old visual format was much easier on the eyes and brain.
Comments have titles?
I thought only threads had titles.
mega bump
I think it would be cool if posts had a “thumbs up” button.
If folks liked a post but didn’t want to say anything more than “LOL!” or “Me too”, then they would hit the thumb on the post.
A little count beside the thumb button would show how many individual readers “thumbed” a post.
I’ve seen this used on at least one other (non-political) and it’s pretty cool. Keeps down on redundant posting. Generally...
I really miss the “return to top of page”
Me too.
Otherwise, no complaints.
A FReeper posted a hint a few months ago that is kind of neat:
Hold down the Ctrl button on your keyboard and spin the wheel on your mouse up or down. It should change the size of the font.
