I Rest My Case: America Has No Moral Compass
The Hill Chronicles ^ | June 6, 2008 | Layla Elizabeth Gonzalez

Posted on 06/07/2008 4:14:53 AM PDT by SLB

I was not planning to post until Monday because I have relatives visiting until Sunday.

However, after first learning of this awfully horrific accident and the callous nature in which a 78-year-old man was the victim of a hit and run and left to lay in the street like dog - I was sickened.

Not one person called 9ll. The only reason this man received help was because a passing officer was on a call for another incident. Had this officer not come by when he did, this man who is now in critical condition fighting for his life just may have died right there where he was left lying helpless.

A 78-year-old man is tossed like a rag doll by a hit-and-run driver and lies motionless on a busy city street as car after car goes by. Pedestrians gawk but do nothing. One driver stops briefly but then pulls back into traffic. A man on a scooter slowly circles the victim before zipping away.

The chilling scene - captured on video by a streetlight surveillance camera - has touched off a round of soul-searching in Hartford, with the capital city’s biggest newspaper blaring “SO INHUMANE” on the front page and the police chief lamenting: “We no longer have a moral compass.”

“We have no regard for each other,” said Chief Daryl Roberts, who released the video this week in hopes of making an arrest in the daylight accident last Friday that left Angel Arce Torres in critical condition.

The hit-and-run took place about 5:45 p.m. in a working-class neighborhood close to downtown in this city of 125,000.

In the video, Torres walks in the two-way street just blocks from the state Capitol after buying milk at a grocery. A tan Toyota and a dark Honda that is apparently chasing it cross the center line, and Torres is struck by the Honda. Both cars then dart down a side street.

You can read this disgusting article depicting the inhumanity of American people by clicking on the above source. The article states that one individual passing by stated that they felt UNCOMFORTABLE STOPPING TO HELP THE VICTIM.

If you missed the story on the news live, then you can view the video here. America has become a people that are self-centered, selfish, ego-centric, and cold-hearted. I am ashamed.

I bet if this was a dog everyone would have run to the animals aid calling the inhumane society for help.

Just teh tip of the iceberg on how America of 2008 is so different from the America the founding fathers had in mind.

Perhaps they thought if they tried to help him and he died, they would be sued.

The police chief is absolutely right and this is the result of the liberal insistence on jettisoning transcendent truth (i.e. God) from our society. Moral relativism which the vast majority of people under 50 have been spoon-fed has just about replaced God, thus, I'm under no moral obligation to do anything for anyone but myself. How sick and how sad.

This is indeed a troubling event.

Some did call 911, but what’s strange and sad is that no one wanted to go near the poor man. And the traffic didn’t stop.

Our souls are broken.

Barack would never allow this to happen.

The moral of the story is not to get hit by a car around a bunch of liberals.

America of 2008 is so different from the America the founding fathers had in mind

Or even 60 years ago. Of course back then America was full of "evil white racist" even though law and order was much more the rule of the day. Not that it was perfect but funny how we didn't need metal detectors, cameras on every corner, electronic ID's, Naked X-ray machines, "pay before you pump" etc. We were really backward in those days.

If you watch closely you see one of the “people” who approached him getting a pic with his cell phone.

I'm still the grownup my parents raised me to be: I'd have been immediately helping that poor man. I've studied that phenomena, up close and from a distance -- feeling "uncomfortable" helping another. I gave that thing a name about 20 years ago, I called it "chic tag". Folks are worried about: getting sued; or being late to work; or stuck for hours having to take responsibility for another human's "life drama". It's just not "cool" or copesthetic to their life "focus" and drains their "energy".

They've obviously forgotten the thermodynamics of energy, and if philosophers - they've forgotten how karma/dharma works. If they are religious, one has to question what their religion upholds.

But helping another is the most basic building block of any civilization.

It's possible in Hartford, too many crying wolfs of "hardship" (poverty, minority, female, blah blah) have deadened people to even remotely wanting to be involved.

There's nothing "chic" about playing "tag" through avoiding a situation which has one's name directly on it.

Life plays out for each of us; sometimes it has our name on it; sometimes we are to be witnesses. But when we ignore what the call is, and act accordingly, we buy ourselves a pack of trouble; often having no idea why in years to come our lives are so bedeviled.

Chic Tag (pretending it's someone else's responsibility when in fact it is YOURS) is no laughing matter, truly.

Chic Tag takes place in deadbeat parent syndrome -- assuming the government will "pay" and take care of your children. Chic Tag takes place in Hollywood where stars ignore the real hardships among themselves, but prate so lofty before the cameras. Chic tag takes place in the home, where others assume the "maid" will clean up that mess.

Chic tag destroys and devastates, negatively altering and impacting environments and lives. Chic tag took place in New Orleans during Katrina, where local officials refused to do what was right, preferring instead to blame the Federal government.

Chic tag runs Obama's campaign; offering platitudes instead of real downright plans.

Chic tag is ugly.

You could even let your kids play outside unsupervised and women could safely walk the streets at night. But dont tell a liberal, he’ll say it was all your imagination and that it’s really better now.

A very similiar situation occured to our family just 3 weeks ago.

We were on the way to Southwestern Seminary for a conference when we hit some traffic on 290 near Fairfield (NW)of Houston). I thought it was road construction. As we stopped and started and came to the top of an overpass (hundreds of cars passing...mind you) we saw the reason for the delay...a smashed up car...which had been creamed by a goose-neck truck and trailer. It was sitting in the middle of the highway and traffic was going (squeezing) b/w it and the concrete barricades on the overpass..since it was sitting sideways on the middle stripe.

There were no cops...only the truck...100 yds down the road...and the car...and a little old lady who had seen it happen. My wife and I...along with 3 kids (8, 6 and 4 mo) decided to stop. We activated our emergency OnStar and my wife gave details as I ran back to the scene...avoiding all the cars as they made their way past the accident.

I got to the trucker...he was OK and doing paperwork! I got to the old lady and she was trying to work her cell...and I asked her if anyone was in the car...expecting the answer to be no...because surely someone would be helping. She said yes.

I ran to the car...and in it was a 17 yr old kid (found his D.L. later) half-dead....bleeding and sprawled over his front seat....glass everywhere.

Meanwhile...an 18 wheeler was trying to squeeze b/w the wreck and the barricade. I put a stop to that as I checked the guys ABC's. The trucker stopped...gave me a dirty look that I had dared stop him on a busy run as I tried to save this kids life in the middle of the road...and then proceeded to sit there and talk on his CB 20 feet away from me as I tried to keep the kid stable until the EMS arrived. Only 1 other person got out (off) of their vehicle...a biker. They sat life-flight down on the highway by the wreck.

Needless to say...I had a big wake up call about the "good samaritan" thing. If you think it exists in Houston, TX...think again. Hundreds of people drove past that kid as he laid dying and only a little old lady stopped so she could call 911. Nobody else lifted a finger.

no one wanted to go near the poor man. And the traffic didn’t stop.

Or, perhaps the traffic didn't stop so no one went near the poor man. I'd be scared to bring someone in out of traffic, too, for fear some crazy SOB would run me over and kill me. I sold my motorcycle because where I live people will take a serious chance of killing you with their cars rather than be late for work, because of course they left late for work. You're the POS that's between them and work, and maybe the cause of their being fired if they get there late. That makes you the stickiest, slimiest form of dung on the bottom of their shoes.

I'd have serious hesitation about jumping in front of the psycho @$$holes that make up a fair percentage of the American driving public today to help anyone other than a family member. Remember, too, we're conditioned now that "It's a police matter". We let the cops handle everything in modern America. I'm sure that's the thought a lot of them had, and I can't blame them there, either. Who wants to be harangued by the police for stepping into an emergency situation that creates or worsens a hazardous condition?

I'm not bashing the police here. I'm simply pointing out what I think is a component of a good deal of thinking in the modern world. I've been yelled at by cops for what I thought were fairly innocent actions in traffic. I don't take those kinds of risks any more. Let them deal with it.

City officials later acknowledged that police received four 911 calls immediately after the incident, and release portions of two calls on Friday.

Typical "journalist". Get's it wrong again.

Chic Tag is also (from article): "A tan Toyota and a dark Honda that is apparently chasing it cross the center line, and Torres is struck by the Honda. Both cars then dart down a side street.".

Chic Tag is the drive-by media.

Chic Tag is the chic who insults another chic and runs off.

Chic Tag is also gang behavior for knocking another off and earning one's stripes.

Chic Tag is thefting another or a business.

Chic Tag is dating a guy but only for what he can buy you, and then dropping him.

Chic tag is ripping off the little guy because "one can."

Chic Tag is making up bad gossip about another and talking behind that person's back.

Chic Tag is racial intimidation for the purpose of feeling superior.

Chic Tag is belittling males but only so some females can feel superior.

Chic tag is never good, never contributes, is narcissistic, is terrifically insecure, and bedevilled, and addictive for those who think Chic Tag is "all that".

Chic Tag has no class, may have money and fine things, but no class, no dignity, no self, no core. Chic Tag consumes itself and all living organisms surrounding the Chic Tagger.

Chic Tag in Hartford ran down a man, and then ran to hide by darting down a side street. Chic Taggers are already coming up with an Official excuse for what they know they did. Chic Taggers aren't thinking at all about the human they've maimed; but only are they consumed with how they can get away with their crime against humanity; while pleading for human "compassion" for their alibi and/or excuse.

Chic Taggers have underdeveloped personalities, and no soul.

...no excuses for this.....BUT....I expect the pedestrians were hesitant to help for fear of getting run over themselves....motorists should have stopped immediately and hit their emergency flashers....that would have stopped until help arrived.

Several years ago, a pedestrian was hit in Tampa, and a very similar thing happened,
but a "Good Samaritan" did stop to lend assistance, only to have the older person die.
The next thing we heard on the news, the children of this older person were filling a
law suit on the "Good Guy"...

I'm not defending any of the non-good Samaritans here, just pointing out how we as a society
has changed from what most of us here at FR were raised to believe and do...sad to say

I learned to drive in the NY metro area, so I understand city traffic and heartless bystanders. But if you’re driving a car and you see a man lying in the road, you should stop, in order to protect him from further injury by blocking traffic. All it takes is a heart and a brain.

That’s a really sad story. And it reminds me of a case from 1964, that was a harbinger of this one.

I was just thinking about the parable of the good Samaritan. Fitting.
