Obama wants forced labor for school children
Office of the President-Elect ^ | 11-05-08 | Office of the President-Elect

America Serves

"When you choose to serve -- whether it's your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood -- you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That's why it's called the American dream."

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

"No they will end up eliminating home & Private schooling. Wait and see."

They'll have a real hard time with the Catholics. You can't swing a dead cat up here without hitting a Catholic school.

I finally figured it out. On my way home from work last night I heard John Mayer’s song, “Waiting On the World to Change”. Obama probably based his whole campaign idea on that song. See what insight sleep deprivation gives someone?

LOL that’s a novel way to put it. I don’t see how this man is going to be stopped (through lawful means). He’s emboldened and is now surrounded by thugs although they do wear suits.

“See what insight sleep deprivation gives someone?”

LOL LOL!
I had an epiphany myself yesterday (I think it was from food deprivation for me)
I live in Missouri and Highway 44 is an east/west hwy and about a year ago electronic billboards were installed on the side of both westbound and eastbound lanes about every 3-4 miles. Messages at this time: Click it or Ticket, You Drink, you drive you lose (I love getting lectured with my tax money). Anyway, it dawned on me that these could quite possibly say “Check Point Ahead” in the future.

It will be interesting to see how Obama’s ‘required service’ will stand up in court.

I understand Japanese schools, for example, have no janitors. The students themselves clean up after themselves every day.

That will never happen in the United States, the janitors' union will not permit it.

However, it is distinctly possible that the janitors will sit around doing nothing all day and collecting a fat paycheck (half of which will be donated to the Democrats) while the child volunteers actually clean the school.

I teach at a school that requires community service. That is community service for drug and alcohol violations.

There is, or used to be, a distinction between punishment of criminals, and penalties for all. Community service is being used as a penalty now, so it's pretty hard to pretend that is something positive. The kids will certainly not think so.

I don't mind that states require high school-based community service. Just like I don't mind that states issue speeding tickets.

Speeding tickets are given for a violation of a regulation or law. What did law or regulation did the high-school kid violate?

But I object to FEDERAL GOVERNMENT doing such things.

I object to any government entity requiring (in-)voluntary servitude. (Well, ok, I also can't see an alternative to taxes and war-time drafts, but I still don't like them.)

I am a life long Reagan Conservative unprinicpled moderate, and even I can see the merit to this...

getting kids involved in the community is a brilliant idea, and at just under an hour a week, it is almost nothing- people should be doing this on their own...

Life long conservatives don't think the government should be doing this. They do think people should be doing this on their own, and they might urge people to do this on their own, but government force to get it done is not the conservative position.

Forcing moral choices on folks isn't a conservative position, and it isn't a liberal position either. At least that is what the liberals claim when it comes to killing babies.

This is purely a socialist position, that the government is the right agent to form the moral codes of our children by forcing desired behavior.

There is the little matter of the 13th Amendment, which bars compulsory servitude (otherwise known as “slavery”).

It will only take five Supreme Court justices to draw a line through that one.

Much like Dubyah, i don’t care how i am viewed, when it is right, it is right.

That's the problem then, much like Dubya, you know what is 'right', but from the leftist point of view. Dubya didn't seem to have a clue about the conservative position either.

In the good old days, you were drafted at 18, walked point as soon as you got in country, and died.

semi-related--I work as a civil servant (Navy)--the janitorial contract for the new FY states that our janitors have to emply the trash "only" once a week---we have to take it out the other 4 times. LOL...and in the meantime, the janitors stand around smoking their cigs and talking on the cell phone.
