Wind turbines fail to generate power
The Jakarta Post ^ | 20 Dec 2008 | Ni Komang Erviani

Posted on 12/20/2008 6:19:00 PM PST by Dundee

Seven wind turbines launched in Nusa Penida, an island southeast of Bali, during the United Nations Framework on Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC) in December 2007 have failed to deliver any of their promised power to local residents.

A solar plant was also opened during the conference, as a demonstration of the administrations commitment to renewable energy. The solar plant continues to perform efficiently, producing up to 30 kilowatts of electricity per hour. The wind farms, however, have stayed silent.

Head of Nusa Penida district Wayan Sumarta acknowledged that the seven wind plants have never been operational.

He said he regrets their failure, lamenting the fact that the plants cost billions of rupiah to construct and had not lived up the high hopes locals had for them as an alternative source of energy.

"It is truly regrettable that a major project like this was not been managed appropriately. Now, they are nothing more than monuments. We expect the government to pay serious attention to them," he said.

Each wind turbine (see picture) cost a reported Rp 3.5 billion ($US325,000) to build and had a planned production capacity 80 kilowatts.

Contacted by phone, spokesperson of the Bali branch of the state-owned electricity company PT PLN, Agung Mustika, denied that the plants have never worked.

"All of the plants operate normally. If their turbines do not move, they are storing the energy. It doesn't mean they are not functioning," he said.

PLN financed in part the construction of the plants and is responsible for their operation and maintenance.--JP/Ni Komang Erviani

Makes one wonder if they checked the ‘history’ of that location to see if wind turbines would even be applicable.

...which is why no capitalists want to put any money into them unless the government is going to heavily subsidize them (Hello, T. Boone!!).

Wind is inconsistent, inefficient and harmful to birds as well as being an eyesore and dangerous within urban settings.

Solar is still multiple times more expensive than nat gas, coal or nuclear.

So where is The One going to put all this ‘stimulus’ money into that ‘green economy’??? He is going to subsidize failing schemes like corn-based ethanol which cost consumers hundreds of billions in higher food prices and tens of billions in Congressional giveaways. And STILL the ethanol companies are failing like gay marriage chapels.

Wind turbines fail to generate power

But they're good for target practice, I think.

Someone who installed one for his personal use said that in a hurricane he could make toast.

Of course, a wind turbine can be switched "off" (for maintenance, in high wind situations, etc.). Given the cryptic nature of the statement above, one could get the impression the turbines are currently not turning because no demand for their energy is coming to them from the national electric power management authority. "Storing the energy" is probably a mistranslation or poor choice of words on the maanager's part. More like saving the equipment from unnecessary wear and tear.

They just need to nationalize them, then all will be well. /s/

Here is a book that has some interesting information concerning the statues of Easter Island.

Wind energy on land is a get rich quick scheme. And it is being foisted upon us by people who want to make sure the poor stay poor.

"...And it is being foisted upon us by people who want to make sure the poor stay poor."

By those "people" I will assume that you are referring to our entrenched politicians and their sponsors/supporters.

BTW your post has the sense to me of one who is not fully on board with the tenets of FR.com.

Someone who installed one for his personal use said that in a hurricane he could make toast.

I'd be more concerned about it getting blown over and crashing into my house!

Screw the toast, I wanna live!

Disclaimer: I was born and raised in California. I've never experienced a hurricane.
