Parody author defends 'Barack the Magic Negro' December 29, 2008 12:35 EST

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- The Memphis author of the musical parody "Barack the Magic Negro" says he isn't surprised the song has gotten some people upset.

Author Paul Shanklin describes the song as political satire and says it's supposed to be provocative.

The song, which is sung to the tune of "Puff the Magic Dragon, has drawn attention and criticism since Chip Saltsman -- the former head of the Republican Party in Tennessee -- sent out a CD with the song on it as Christmas presents.

Saltsman managed Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's presidential campaign and is now running for chairman of the Republican National Committee.

The song questions whether Obama is "authentically" black and intimates white voters wouldn't have voted for him if he had been from "the hood."

Personally I thought it was one of the funniest things he’s done in a long time

I thought so too. But he might have topped it with Barney Fwank singing "Banking Queen."

Rereading that article after the fact of the election makes it an even more important essay. What the author was describing so early in the primary season (practically immediately after the 2006 mid-term elections) has come true.

White Americans approve of BHO in a way that they never did of Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton who were/are the ‘attitude’ American blacks.

Perhaps this mini-controversy about the Shanklin parody will get a few more people to read this article and evaluate their own motives for liking and supporting Obama.

The concluding paragraphs:

“Obama’s fame right now has little to do with his political record or what he’s written in his two (count ‘em) books, or even what he’s actually said in those stem-winders. It’s the way he’s said it that counts the most. It’s his manner, which, as presidential hopeful Sen. Joe Biden ham-fistedly reminded us, is “articulate.” His tone is always genial, his voice warm and unthreatening, and he hasn’t called his opponents names (despite being baited by the media).

“Like a comic-book superhero, Obama is there to help, out of the sheer goodness of a heart we need not know or understand. For as with all Magic Negroes, the less real he seems, the more desirable he becomes. If he were real, white America couldn’t project all its fantasies of curative black benevolence on him.”

#####

Shelby Steele wrote a good book about the same phenomenon as it relates to Obama’s ways. It has been totally ignored by Big Media.

“Even some of my Democrat voter friends tell me that they have become less than enthusiastic because they now realize that this guy was elected BECAUSE he claims to be “black” and has no other qualifications.”

I’m glad your friends are wising up! It is difficult for me to understand why people couldn’t see this all along. My blood boiled every time someone tried to say that racism would hurt his chances. The only chance he had was predicated on playing up his supposed status as the first black candidate nominated by a major party. Had he been identical in every way except to be as white as John Edwards he would have done no better than John Edwards. In fact he would never have entered the presidential race and I doubt that he would ever have entered politics at any level. He is somebody’s puppet.

We need to stop all the RINO vs Conservative talk...let’s unite and defeat the Democrats in 2010.

Like it or not-fairly or unfairly-this will be viewed as racism and diminish the GOP chances in future elections.

Anyone stupid enough to let this be their deciding issue, rather than the economy, taxes, abortion, national defense, the SCOTUS, etc. (I could go on and on, but you get the idea) is not, or should not be the GOP's target electorate anyway.

Enough with the namby pamby middle of the road moderates! We want real, true Conservatives, not just enough liberals to "like us" enough to help us win elections.

We need to get past being the United States of the Offended. And we need to effectively shut down those who are consistently acting as apologists for our side to those who make their living by being offended.

The libs have been using the "in your face" tactic for years, while the GOP continues to apologize for being racist... to those same minorities that THEY (the GOP) have stood up for for years.

Ask your average Obama voter which party freed the slaves; or which party passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. They don't know BECAUSE THE LIBERAL'S GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS NEVER TAUGHT IT TO THEM!!! And we are supposed to get all worked up because they do not understand parody, and might...heaven forbid...take it the wrong way?

I have ceased to give a fat rat's ass what the liberals, or their apologists on "our" side get upset about.

It's high time that we quit pussy-footing around these people. It's also time we quit paying folks to sit on their ass and make babies, while giving preferential treatment to substandard people like Barack and Michelle so they can get to the top and rule over us.

It is time we told all of the whiners in both the Democrat and Republican parties what we should have been saying all along: "Now, we're going to be in YOUR face. Deal with it!"

In 2006 we lost the election because Christians stayed home or so I was informed. In 2008 we lost because of the RINO’s... no we lost because we don’t have any ideas, plans or things we want to accomplish. The public is sick of gridlock. They want stuff done.

I know. I have considered going third party myself, but this seems a recipe for continuing Dem rule.

Unite as what? Conservatives or Rino’s? Why are we being forced into Rinoism?

Exactly what do you want to do that a RINO won’t do? Most are fiscally conservative. Is it better to fight amongst ourselves and elect Democrats? There is no doubt that there are not enough conservatives to win the presidency. We must appeal to other voters. We can put forth conservative principles which I think a fair number actually share...but this stupid songs gets in the way of attracting new voters.

Well said. Too many weak-kneed Republican voters (i.e. never been conservatives) are swayed by Clinton-like "poll driven immediacy" and are afraid to stand on principles of their own, instead allowing the other side to define the issues, vocabulary, perspective, etc.

I'm convinced some who have voted (R) in past have virtually no political principles, but live by political expediency alone.

I have kids in US history right now...I can assure you they know Lincoln a Republican freed the slaves...again excuses for the 2008 losses. We lost because most people don’t believe Roe VS. Wade will ever be overturned and have no idea of what a conservative is...yelling at them and insulting them will not win their votes.

I don’t dispute anyone’s right to play the song... I merely question the wisdom of playing the song.

Your attempts to dilute conservative principles will not fly here...beware of lightning strikes. You’ve been exposed.

It’s an old organization that still use the same name, they don’t think it’s racist.
