SACRAMENTO — An issue that briefly brought President Barack Obama ridicule on the campaign trail last year is gaining traction in California, where air regulators are seeking to mandate proper tire inflation as a way to reduce fuel consumption.

The state Air Resources Board today adopted a resolution requiring auto repair shops to check tire pressure every time drivers bring in their vehicle for maintenance, oil changes and smog tests. The next step is to develop detailed rules to implement the mandate, which will take effect in July 2010.

Regulators say widespread awareness of having properly inflated tires could lead to California motorists saving 75 million gallons of gasoline a year and using 700,000 fewer tires.

Soon there will be rules for how many toilet flushes and sheets of TP one can use per day.

Boy, I'm sure glad our Great Leaders have all the Big Issues -- like balancing the budget, reducing Illegal Immigration, etc. -- figured out, such that this silliness is all they have to worry about.

And what if your pressure is too low? I don’t think inspection-only stations have air hoses, do they? And will they fill the tires up for a low, low price of $20 per tire? What a crock.

Do they work? Every couple of weeks my husband checks my kids tires, it would save him some work.

The ownership of a car is long already thoroughly socialized in CA. I fume (pun intended) every time the smog check comes around.

I remember a time when insurance was NOT mandated.

I wonder why CA conservatives have never fought any of this socialism via automobile the way they tried to fight property taxes?

California would be a great national joke if it weren’t such a national tragedy and shame.

sheets of TP one can use per day

According to Sheryl Crows it's 4 per use but she failed to specify one or two ply. Suzanne Somers said on her diet she hadn't gone #2 in years so that should save a few more squares.

***... and sheets of TP one can use per day. ****

I think the military already has one on this, at least that is what we were told back in 1966. Two (2) sheets.

****************************************************
They work but they can introduce problems ,, those gadgets keep the schrader valve (in the valvestem) open a bit to monitor the pressure, these gadgets are made of a hard clear plastic that can crack if you just bump a curb or you could simply have a leak where it screws onto the stem... additionally you have to remove and re-install them every time you add air,, their seal to the stem will deteriorate...

Here are two systems that can monitor tire presure in realtime ... very soon monitoring systems will be standard equipment (mandated by US-DOT/NHTSA)
