Why is it that we Conservatives allow the word "Redneck"?

I have a question. Why do conservatives allow ourselves to be called "Rednecks". I'm on YouTube and Digg. When a poster calls us uneducated Rednecks, no one says a word.

Why don't we own this word? Why aren't we framing the conversation? I find it insulting to be called a dumb Redneck. Much more than to be called a dumb Pollack, because at least I'm Polish.

If macaca is insulting, why is Redneck okay?

My two favorite “You might be a redneck” jokes are:

“If you have a complete set of salad bowls and they all say “Cool Whip” along the side”

and

“If your Mother does not remove the Marlboro from her mouth before telling the State Trooper to kiss her butt”

"I needed a comeback."

Whenever someone starts name calling I just state "thanks for the compliment" and continue on with the discussion. You would not believe the facial expressions you get with this "comeback".

Exactly. I hunt, fish, have 5 dogs, a pickup truck, and am a gunsmith who owns a gunshop. We pickle and can from our garden. I’d rather go to the gun range than a play.

I chuckle at the arrogance shown by those who look down their noses and spit the word “redneck” like an epithet.

It’s a compliment acknowledging my Scotch-Irish heritage and my ability to take care of me and mine.

Why is it that we have allowed ourselves to be slandered for decades by people with “nefarious” designs?

“it was coin by the New York Times”

Coined by the New York Times, don’t you love it! The Times’ “contributions” to American society are endless.

“Redneck” is an honorable status. Your neck is “red” because you work out in the sun all day.

I was more offended when some British guy called me a Yankee. I don't mind being called redneck to much.

Why do you let a word get you so upset?

Don't sweat it. Any time I hear the word, I think of the great Jerry Jeff Walker's song "Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother"

And it's up against the wall Redneck Mother,
Mother, who has raised her son so well.
He's thirty-four and drinking in a honky tonk.
Just kicking hippies asses and raising hell!

It’s because most conservative white folks aren’t “race cowards.”

I'm listening to Thomas Sowell’s “Black Rednecks and White Liberals”. It's interesting how knowing the history of a word or epithet allows you to rise above bad intent.

Sowell describes how rednecks originated in the rougher areas of the British Isles (Scotland for example) and resettled into the southeastern united states. He observes how some blacks, having been raised in this culture, ended up the city ghettos, where they continue to exhibit these cultural traits. He derides both the black rednecks and the white liberals for promoting the sloth, brashness and murderous aggressiveness of the culture. The former for not raising themselves above the poor culture and the latter for their elitest promotion of a failed culture to be protected as a source of pride.

As an industrious southern boy, I'm embarrassed that my region is associated with this culture. As an informed adult I'm pleased to be forearmed against much of the intentional misrepresentation by the left.

I don’t let it get me upset. However, those who own the language frame the argument.

Only those who are are ashamed of the category they belong to will try to escape the label of that category, once the label justifiably becomes a synonym for the behavior/traits they are ashamed of. Those who due to their own nature keep polluting their own pond will naturally seek to jump to the next unpolluted one.

Redneck (or whity or cracker or Polack...), don't feel that derrogaroty attributes thrown at them by the liberal media truly fit them, hence they have nothing to be ashamed of. While truth hurts, the lies will simply roll of you back.

You might be a redneck if:
It never occurred to you to be offended by the phrase,
‘One nation, under God.’

You might be a redneck if:
You’ve never protested about seeing
the 10 Commandments posted in public places.

You might be a redneck if:
You still say
‘ Christmas’ instead of ‘Winter Festival.’

You might be a redneck if:
You bow your head when someone prays.

You might be a redneck if:
You stand and place your hand over your heart
when they play the National Anthem.

You might be a redneck if:
You treat our armed forces veterans with great respect,
and always have.

You might be a redneck if:
You’ve never burned an American flag, nor intend to.

You might be a redneck if:
You know what you believe and you aren’t afraid to say so,
no matter who is listening.

You might be a redneck if:
You respect your elders and raised your kids to do the same.

You might be a redneck if:
You’d give your last dollar to a friend.
