A “Lost” Fact in the “Rathergate” Mess — Part 1 (Bush volunteered to go to Vietnam)
BernardGoldberg.com ^ | August 25th, 2009 | Bernard Goldberg

Posted on 08/25/2009 5:33:03 PM PDT by Bratch

In 2007, Rather filed his $70 million lawsuit against his old company saying he wasn’t allowed to defend his story because the top management of CBS’ parent company, Viacom, wanted to appease the Bush Administration and protect its business interests.

Until now, the controversy over the Rather/Mapes story has centered almost entirely on one issue: the legitimacy of the documents – a very important issue, indeed. But it turns out that there was another very important issue, one that goes to the very heart of what the story was about – and one that has gone virtually unnoticed. This is it: Mary Mapes knew before she put the story on the air that George W. Bush, the alleged slacker, had in fact volunteered to go to Vietnam.

Who says? The outside panel CBS brought into to get to the bottom of the so-called “Rathergate” mess says. I recently re-examined the panel’s report after a source, Deep Throat style, told me to “Go to page 130.” When I did, here’s the startling piece of information I found:

Mapes had information prior to the airing of the September 8 [2004] Segment that President Bush, while in the TexANG [Texas Air National Guard] did volunteer for service in Vietnam but was turned down in favor of more experienced pilots. For example, a flight instructor who served in the TexANG with Lieutenant Bush advised Mapes in 1999 that Lieutenant Bush “did want to go to Vietnam but others went first.” Similarly, several others advised Mapes in 1999, and again in 2004 before September 8, that Lieutenant Bush had volunteered to go to Vietnam but did not have enough flight hours to qualify.

George Bush volunteered to go to Vietnam when he served in the Texas Air National Guard. Mary Mapes knew that when CBS report ran their story slamming Bush.

What did Dan Rather know and when did he know it?

I like humble people. But Bush never defends Himself, or His administration, or any of His decisions. This is no longer my calling to carry water for this guy. I was with Him for the whole ride, and He was just quiet on a lot of this stuff.

Thank you for posting this link . . . Unlike Clinton and Obama, George W Bush joined the military (at a time when MANY of his generation were avoiding it like the plague) and served his country honorably!

Here at Free Republic we know the documents were fraudulent from the first day we saw them. An old Doonesbury poster known as Porsadgai (then) and Pors (now) forgot to un-check "kerning on" when he did the job for another old Doonesbury poster known as Migali, a sales rep for a firm manufacturing and selling fuel cells in Nebraska (whose last known girlfriend worked as an attorney in Family Services in Nashville, TN). He, in turn, knew the guy who said he'd seen Republican officials visiting the federal records center where he was doing his Air Force Reserve duty.

That last item was probably when Sandy Berger visited the site to move George Bush' military records around so that most of them simply got lost ~ they were, of course, rediscovered the week Sandy Berger copped a plea regarding his espionage trip to the National Archives.

Anyway, this is old homeweek for some of us, so we just naturally believed from the beginning that the Mapes woman was in on it. She knew "W" had volunteered for the Nam, and that's a strong implication that she knew the documents were fraudulent, and she probably knew Migali's girlfriend in Nashville TN for that matter.

These people should all go to jail for a very long time.

Why bother getting into a shouting match with the likes of Dan Rater or any of the msm that were deaf to the truth. Anything he said would be twisted.

By selecting the F-102 pilot position, Bush would not have been assigned to Vietnam. The F102 was an interceptor that did not see much service there at all. It was nearly obsolete by the time he was proficient to fly it.

For a refresher, here is a document I created in Microsoft Word and then overlaid on the Rather memo.

If he had been selected for Vietnam, he would have been trained on a more modern aircraft.

“Goldberg says he was given a tip by “a source, Deep Throat style, [who] told me to ‘Go to page 130 [of the commissioned panel’s report].’” What was on page 130?

“Mapes had information prior to the airing of the September 8 [2004] Segment that President Bush, while in the TexANG [Texas Air National Guard] did volunteer for service in Vietnam but was turned down in favor of more experienced pilots.

For example, a flight instructor who served in the TexANG with Lieutenant Bush advised Mapes in 1999 that Lieutenant Bush ‘did want to go to Vietnam but others went first.’ Similarly, several others advised Mapes in 1999, and again in 2004 before September 8, that Lieutenant Bush had volunteered to go to Vietnam but did not have enough flight hours to qualify.”

Goldberg notes that this section was mentioned on a few Web sites and in two newspaper opinion pieces (in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and the Miami Herald). “But that was it!” he says.

“If [Mapes] knew that George Bush had volunteered for service in Vietnam,” Goldberg writes, “she obviously had an obligation to share that with her viewers.”

“Now the question is,” Goldberg continues, “did she share what she knew with her correspondent, Dan Rather...What did Rather know — and when did he know it?”

Both Rather and Mapes are on the record as criticizing the panel’s 2005 report, with Rather stating in his 2007 lawsuit against CBS that the network and its executives turned him into “a scapegoat.” The lawsuit, in its current form, continues to make its way through the courts today, almost five years after the original 60 Minutes II story aired.”
