U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue says a campaign by the White House and its allies to undermine his $200-million-a-year association has largely failed — and actually has helped raise even more money for its pro-business efforts.
In a 75-minute interview with POLITICO, Donohue dismissed recent defections by Apple and at least four other companies, which quit over the Chamber’s opposition to Democratic climate change legislation — as essentially meaningless. “Members come and go all the damn time,” he said.
That’s true. But rarely — if ever — have companies jumped ship in such a public way.
Donohue made plain he believes the White House, or at least its closest allies operating on the outside, are behind a very orchestrated campaign to embarrass and undermine the Chamber.
“People that are associated with those major pieces of legislation are somewhat frustrated and trying to marginalize the Chamber as well as people that work here,” he said.
The Chamber, like Fox News, says it’s making the best of a fight it did not choose. It’s unusual for a White House to take on critics so frontally, but aides to President Barack Obama said they decided in August they needed to be more aggressive in confronting their critics. And that revs up supporters on the left, who had hoped Obama would cater to them more quickly and gives the White House a foil to help argue its case.
POLITICO reported last week the White House wants to neuter the Chamber after clashes over health care, energy and financial regulation.

The US Chamber of Commerce has a massive 3 million members, how the heck is the defection of Apple to the 0bamabot camp relevant? It's a tiny blip.

Who cares whether the quietly or they leave while squealing like the rats that they are? Bottom line is, members come and go all the time, and it's no worse now than it was before.

Pardon me but there is a HUGE difference in ‘letting the media crap all over’ and attacking and trying to control the media and chamber of commerce. Obama is fighting back via the simple logic that he is not a leader he is a Chicago mob bully with radical marxism and tyrannical tendencies.
Obama got cought abecause he was so used to media cover. You may want to tell him the gig is up.
I agree with you generally, but I think fighting back against media unfairness is much different from picking out one media outlet and going after them alone.
I was considering buying an Apple computer. Not any more. Why a private sector company—right now anyway—would tie itself to “climate change”—aka “global warming”—is a mystery to me.
A company that is so technology savvy could but buys into global warming tells me all I need to know about that company. Glad I don’t have any stock in Apple.
You may already know that Al Gore is on their board of directors.

Bush went too far one way and Obama is going too far the other way. Cheney knows how to launch a proper fight.
If it's any consolation it looks like Windows 7 is actually going to be a really good operating system. Vista is OK, flawed, but w7 is getting great reviews. And linux distros like Ubuntu, etc. are good too if you're more hands on.
And again, maybe you know all this anyway. It'll be cheaper going non-mac. (I like both but buy the less expensive setup.)
I visited the new Apple retail store last year and was not impressed with the Obot odor that the sales and customers give off. The products were OK but very over priced....obviously going for the visual/gamer market. I expect they had an enormous vat of lefty koolaid in the back for their staff. What a crappy cult of Obot voters surrounds Apple!

I've got Vista on my desktop, and XP on the laptop. The laptop is woefully inadequate for image processing but overall, the operating systems on both have been relatively trouble-free. I've heard good things about Windows 7.
The reason I was even looking at the macbook was that I need the best video/monitor capability that I can get in a laptop. The Macbook Pro models have the new LED screens, but Dell (and others) offer that also now). The images from my DSLR camera are between 25 and 30 megabytes each in Canon's RAW format. My present laptop just can't handle them, and it's already upgraded to its maximum.
Good grief - why does a software company offer its “corporate” opinion on something as unrelated as “climate change” (formerly “global warming”)? That’s akin to a dentist recommending a brand of motor oil.
Good darn question! It would seem that a smart company would not want to alienate any potential customers and would "stick to its knitting".
