A new study says taxes are driving people away.
An old saying goes that the time to live in New York is when you're young and poor, or old and richotherwise, you're better off somewhere else. That wisdom is getting an update this week from a study by the Empire Center for New York State Policy that shows middle-class people leaving the state in droves.
Between 2000 and 2008, the Empire State had a net domestic outflow of more than 1.5 million, the biggest exodus of any state, with most hailing from New York City. The departures also have perilous budget consequences, since they tend to include residents who are better off than those arriving. Statewide, departing families have income levels 13% higher than those moving in, while in New York County (home of Manhattan) the differential was even more severe. Those moving elsewhere had an average income of $93,264, some 28% higher than the $72,726 earned by those coming in.

Rush talked about this happening for years and said it was why he left as well.
Same thing in Kalifornia.
I am getting out as soon as it makes financial sense — gotta sell the house and that is a problem.
Been there, done that. IMHO the locals are nicer than legend would have you believe, however.
Except for some ripoff hoteliers and a few other business-types.
Can't advise "abandon the house" but I got out a long time ago and am glad for it.

Things are settling down a bit — targeting the next year or so. I have spent a few years in Texas, so I will move as near to DFW as I can get, since I travel so much.
I am not going to stay where I am not wanted. When someone says “you work too hard and are too frugal — you must be punished,” I take that as a sign I am not wanted.
I have a few questions.
These “droves” in which people are leaving New York:
1) Were these manufactured in Detroit by Union labor, or,
2) are these “captive imports”, made with non-union labor in Right-to-Work states, or
3) are these imports, stealing jobs from good Democratic voters, errr, Union members?
4) what is the carbon footprint of these “droves”?
5) should any of these “droves” have been traded/junked during the “Cash for Clunkers” program?
Inquiring minds want to know!

And the definition of insanity is....???
The Duke? The Duke of New York, A-Number-1, the Big Man, that’s who!
I’m a California escapee who got myself and my family to Texas some three and half years ago.
When I tell native Texans that I’m from California, they almost always ask me why I left California to come here. They seem genuinely surprised that I’d leave “The Golden State” to come to their little corner of the world.
What I’ve noticed is that most of them have no idea how different the reality of California is, from the long-established image of the place.
I always tell them that if they moved to California for a year or two, they’d move Heaven and Earth to get back to Texas. It’s that bad, and Texas is that good. This also seems to genuinely surprise them.
People have been leaving New York State for thirty years...I left in 1981...Only people left are welfare and government workers...I think the rich are the last to go for some reason...I moved to Colorado and the Californians we moving in then...they ruined it...There are only a couple of good states left...I’m not telling
And an appreciable percentage wind up here in Northern Virginia where they proceed to vote for liberal Democrats so that what was once a rather conservative area is now beginning to resemble a suburb of New York City.
Please stay home.

When I was in eighth grade in 1964, one of my Dad’s good friends lived on Texas Lane in Ithaca. The address sign on his mailbox read “Taxes Lane.” I was always commenting on the misspelling, but the elders would simply grin and say I would understand someday why he spelled it that way. Even then I remember the elders constantly complaining about all the money that flowed from upstate to fund the NYC cesspool.
Some things never change.
I see loads of Texas cars here in San Diego.
In my neighborhood there are many people from NYC, Boston, San Francisco, and Europe.
People are moving here, one reason they are still building highrise condos
Glad to live in San Diego, if I couldn’t live here would pick New York City.
Well friend, all I can tell you is that the numbers don't lie. California is losing 1,000 native-born American citizens every single day to other states. Many of them are coming to Texas. I can't tell you how many ex-Californians I've met here. We're practically an invasion.
I can assure you that the Texas plates you're seeing are mainly tourists, or Texans giving Cali a whirl. Those who move there nearly always move back to Texas. Texas has the highest rate of native residents who stay, or return, than any other state.
While Cali is losing 1,000 Americans a day, the same number are moving into Texas every day of the year.
There's no getting around the exodus that's occurring.
Ever hear of the "Texaplex"? It's a triangular area defined by Dallas - Ft Worth, San Antonio, and Austin. It's been forecast that this area (now known as the Texaplex) will be the fastest growing area of the country over the next ten years.
Here's a video about the Texaplex phenomenon:

If I lived in any other county in CA I would head out.
Most of the other counties are rural or LA which is small towns connected by freeways or Frisco, a small town with not even a million population
A few Pics of San Diego above
I hear that!
Speaking of "good states", I've just got to say that y'all don't want to move to Texas. It's got blistering heat in the Summer, and icicles in the Winter. Fall is like ten minutes long and all the leaves fall off the trees. Spring is gorgeous, but like Fall, it only lasts for about ten minutes.
Folks down here are ornery, and they talk funny. Everyone drives pick-up trucks with gun racks in the back window, and they ain't opposed to pulling that shotgun out on any outsider who doesn't understand how things are done down here.
The bugs are bigger than cats, and there's fifteen different kinds of snakes all over the place. They've got that weird armadillo thing here, too.
Oh yeah.... all the food has jalapeno peppers in it. Don't come. Stay put, or move somewhere else, if you know what's good for you!
