No Whites Need Apply For Bill Gates Scholarship
Gates Millennium Scholars ^ | 02/03/10 | me

Posted on 02/04/2010 8:26:19 PM PST by DwFry

Bill Gates has made his scholarship fund off limits to white teenagers. The Gates Millennium Scholarship fund is financed by a $1 Billion endowment Bill Gates made in 1999. The fund explicitly denies eligibility to white students.

“Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they: Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian and Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American;"

The Gates Millennium Scholarship target is high achieving minority students in need of financial assistance. That’s not specific enough for you? You obviously don’t LIKE it, but it is very specific.

One imagines it would exclude the Sisters Obama and Jesse Jackson, Jr., in addition to white students who historically have more avenues open to them when they ARE high achieving, even when from poor families.

Why IBM gave Gates a monopoly on DOS seems a mystery--the old line IBM wouldn't have done that, but the skunk-works group who put together the original IBM PC was just trying to slap together something to compete with Apple and the other early micro makers, and weren't thinking too many steps into the future.

Of course, it didn't help that IBM's head skunk was on Delta Flight 191.

This is getting silly. What laws are made to bar whites from ‘certain opportunities?’

And many posts later, you have not addressed the Gates Cambridge Scholars to which many whites have applied, and been awarded a fully funded ticket for graduate work at Cambridge University.

First, I’m really replying to the poster but can’t figure out how. So apology.

What I’m wondering is why this situation isn’t analogous to the Bob Jones University situation of perhaps 15 years ago. As I remember, they had some sort of discriminatory dating policy, and the IRS sort of said, “Well you can do whatever you want, but you can’t be tax exempt if you discriminate on the basis of race.”

I’m honestly asking — why couldn’t someone prevented from even applying for a Gates Foundation scholarship sue to have that tax exempt status removed? I’m guessing that someone had to originally complain to the IRS re Bob Jones University. Heck, what would really be funny would be if the Foundation had to (or chose to) take some sort of remedial action for all those against whom it discriminated on the basis of race.

What’s really sad is how this is oh, so different from what Martin Luther King talked about. I’m old enough to remember his “poor people’s march on Washington.” In the context of that march, I remember his talking about how there were a lot more poor white people than black people. I believe he made sure that there were white people in that march. I certainly don’t agree with MLK’s leftist positions, but he’d never have got the publicity on his leftist positions had he not first attained recognition for his work against terrible racial discrimination in this country.

So. Its his money.

So it is.

And if he had chosen to restrict qualifications to WASPs, that would be his privilege.

Of course, it would also be our right to trash him for doing so, just as we are now doing. (At any rate, I think at least five of the Supremes would agree.)

“The title says: No Whites Need Apply For Bill Gates Scholarship, and that is, in fact, misleading. Whites need not apply for the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which was set up for a specific purpose, to reach a specific audience.”

The scholarship bars Whites. I don’t know why you’re trying to dance around this. I don’t care what other scholarships Gates has, this one is open to any Americans except White Americans.

“My white son or daughter could very well apply for another Gates scholarship; thus the headline is, in fact, misleading.”

No, the headline is not misleading. Had it said “Scholarships” instead of “Scholarship”....then yes....even though it would still be nit picking.

“As has been pointed out there are scholarships galore restricted to every race, ethnic group and religion in this country.”

Once again, I’ll ask you to point out a single “Whites only” scholarship. In the Bill Gates Millennium Fund we have an “Everyone except Whites” scholarship. So where is this balance you speak of?

“So you’re going to post that “Jews Need Not Apply to Knights of Columbus Scholarship?” or “Catholics Need Not Apply to B’nai B’rth Scholarship?” That’s really earth-shattering!”

The criteria for this scholarship is race, not religion so your analogy doesn’t hold water.

“On balance, if you were to balance ALL scholarships, you would find that blacks are restricted from many of them, simply because they do not belong to the particular ethnic group funding it.”

Please point out a Scholarship that is open to everyone EXCEPT Blacks specifically. Until you do, this argument doesn’t work. The GMS lists every race except for your own.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why you try to create this type of lop-sided world for your children.

“I have no problem whatsoever with a private scholarship dedicated to minorities.”

...and a scholarship dedicated to Whites that bars any other race? How do you feel about that? I have real doubt that you would be such an ardent supporter.

I actually agree that people should have the freedom to spend their money on any type of private scholarship they wish but that isn’t the world we live in. We all know Gates will never have a “Whites only” scholarship even though he has no problem with an “Anyone but Whites scholarship.

The Left must be made to live by their own rules (which of course they cant). Thats the only way the rules will change.

Sounds good to me.

Maybe some crazy right-wing fat cat could establish a foundation and offer a whites-only scholarship. Then, when the IRS denies his foundation's tax-exempt status, a precedent would be established, whereby Gates's foundation would also have to lose its tax exemption. Better hurry, though, before Zero gets to replace any conservative justices.

You yourself talked about Affirmative Action.

“And many posts later, you have not addressed the Gates Cambridge Scholars to which many whites have applied, and been awarded a fully funded ticket for graduate work at Cambridge University.”

Thats because it doesn’t matter. Those scholarships didn’t exclude only one group on the basis of race.

“.... in addition to white students who historically have more avenues open to them when they ARE high achieving, even when from poor families.”

Forget the “historical advantages”. They’re not here now and haven’t been for some time. For example, my daughter graduated from H.S. in 1991. She was rated #18 in a class of over 440 students. A Black kid across the street who didn’t have nearly as good a grade point average as my daughter was awarded $50,000+ in scholarships. My daughter was awarded $4,000. Go figure. Then get back to me about “disadvantaged minorities”.

The bottom line its his money and he can give it to whom ever he wants.

That's the same as saying "It's my house, my business, etc and I can sell/rent them to whomever I want. It's blatant discrimination but unfortunately, we no longer have anyone with guts in this country that would challenge this. It's discrimination pure and simple. It became 'public' when he made it a scholarship. My next computer will be a Mac. I've had it with atheist Gates and his trampling of the very country and people that put him on the map. Man......IBM really had their heads up their asses as did Steve Jobs. Gates 'stole' from Jobs. I'm not saying Jobs is any better but until we get someone on the scene other than those 2, there's little choice.

Bottom line is actually, he is a racist. He uses his money to promote racism.

Quick way to piss off a libtard: Point out that it's just as racist to have voted for Obama because he's black than to have voted for McCain because Obama is black.

“, in addition to white students who historically have more avenues open to them when they ARE high achieving, even when from poor families.”

...and this is where you have your head up you ass. You think a poor White kid from North Louisiana or Appalachia has some sort of magical power to get into college quicker than a Black kid from Compton?

Its not 1960 anymore.....if it ever was the 1960 you seem to imagine. White skin is no golden ticket to anything in this country.

I see now why you approve of racial discrimination as long as its against your own children though. I hope you join the real world for their sake. Popular culture & governmental regulations have already turned against them, its a shame that their parent has too.

That was Stephen Girard’s will that was overturned. Fourteenth amendment cited. “Poor WHITE fatherless boys” violated the fourteenth amendment.

Gates gives (or pledges, or whatever) money in a 100% politically correct way like most big money. Big money is then left alone by government as no opening is left for lawsuits.

Same as political contributions.

There are 50 predominately black colleges in the United States and nearly all offer “white only scholarships”. They are looking for diversity on the campus. So there you go.

I do not believe your "nearly all," and you did not provide links, but I did find this:

http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=20041106&slug=colleges06

Tennessee State University, for instance, was at one point under court order to increase its non-black enrollment to 50 percent. The court eventually dropped that requirement, and the school has agreed to earmark $924,000 a year for scholarships to white students.

Heh. So "whites only" scholarships are consider permissible if and only if their primary purpose is not to help whites, but to prevent predominantly black colleges from losing federal funding or being sued into oblivion. I love it, you found the exception that proves the rule.

Private universities, such as Hampton in Virginia and Howard, face no court mandates to attract white students and generally have less diverse student bodies.

At Howard (University), 1 percent, or about 100 of the 11,000 students are white. Those who do enroll are generally drawn by its academic reputation or its music and athletic programs.

Some people just don't value diversity.

I should make it clear that my point was to disagree with the original poster that "...there are scholarships only open to whites, to Norwegian descendants, to women, to rural students, etc.", as though scholarships primarily intended to benefit whites were commonplace and were generally tolerated in modern America. That is not true.

When the MSM runs misleading headlines and stories, FReepers are the first to jump on it. Your headline is as misleading as anything in the NYT/WaPo/Time/Newsweek, or any other leftwing rag. It’s more like the Globe. It says ‘Bill Gates Scholarship,’ not ‘Gates Millenium Scholarship.’ The latter would be an accurate headline.

Insisting on accuracy is not nit-picking. Words mean things. It is not true that whites are excluded from the more famous and far more prestigious, at least among scholars, Gates Cambridge Scholarship.

While you posted the restrictions for applicants, you did NOT mention that the Gates Millennium scholarship is administered by the United Negro College Fund which works in conjunction with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, American Indian Graduate Center Scholars, and the Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund. That information would certainly put the restrictions on applicants in its proper context.

It is increasingly clear that you framed the headline and snippet on restrictions exactly that way precisely to provoke prejudices. And you’ve done a good job of it.

Neither my children nor your children nor any other white child is deprived of a damned thing because of this scholarship fund. Not a damned thing.

Today there is no such thing as a whites only scholarship. In the past there were such scholarships but due to civil rights agitation they were all challenged and modified

Show me any whites only college scholarship you can find
The closest you will get is a Polish only or Ukrainian only scholarship. Where you have to have Polish or Ukrainian ancestors. Even then those are small (or were) (not sure those are around anymore)
