No fries with that: fast food axed at Afghan bases

KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (Reuters) – Fast food joints where soldiers wolf down burgers and pizza will soon be a thing of the past at bases in Afghanistan, as the U.S. military reminds soldiers they are at war and not in "an amusement park."

In the sprawling military base at Kandahar, the fast food outlets facing the axe include Burger King, Pizza Hut, and the U.S. chain restaurant T.G.I. Friday's that features a bar with alcohol-free margaritas and other drinks -- all set along the bustling "Boardwalk" area of the base.

---SNIP---

The U.S. military says its beef with the burger joints is that they take up valuable resources like water, power, flight and convoy space and that cutting back on non-essentials is key to running an efficient military operation.

---SNIP---

Warning that concessions like Orange Julius, Dairy Queen and Military Car Sales were also on the exit list, Hall said less-obvious changes were coming too -- including fewer canned and bottled goods coming into the country as well as fewer first-run movie showings and some entertainment programs.

I have a question. How do first-run movies affect supply lines?

R and R is a vital part of combat operations, so far as I’ve been schooled.

That’s right, lower that morale! Good move, Commander-in-Cheese.

...no surprise here....one of the lessons of Vietnam was that the American military goes into a theater of war at the highest possible materiale level....then it IMMEDIATELY sets about to upgrade itself.

The two things that need to be taken away are the asinine, troop killing ROEs and the Commander in Chief.

Way to boost morale!!!

I guess the Modern Army travels on Hope and Change and not on its stomach (as has been said for over 2,000 years).

Can this regime end soon enough?

Wonder if the mess halls still serve steak and lobster?

This is the type of military command stupidity that usually only can be found in a M*A*S*H episode. Decision reversed in 5 . . . . 4 . . . . 3 . . . . 2 . . . .

Destroy America, destroy the economy, destroy health care, destroy the dollar, destroy military morale, destroy everyone’s retirement, destroy apple pie, etc., a never ending list. Just something else that has Zero’s filthy fingerprints all over it.

I remember Stephen Ambrose writing about General Taylor not giving troops in Belgium (Battle of the Bulge) their winter clothes because he wanted them to be motivated to fight to end the war.

Apparantly he's still in the army.

I didn’t think it was possible, but I hate this administration more - each and every day.

Especially as compared to second-run movies.

R an R to Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal consists of 8 mile runs.

That is exactly what those who voted for obama voted for. They asked for it and they got it.

This is crazy, it’s a deliberate effort to demoralize the troops.

These people are the last people that need to be lectured about being in a war. Having something small yet enjoyable - a piece of pizza, etc, in frickin AFGHANISTAN doesn’t suddenly make the person forget where they are or somehow take their focus off what they’re doing.

R & R is important to let these guys decompress a bit. Otherwise they’ll burn out and be no good for themselves or anyone else. If a little pizza or a movie from home can help keep people uplifted while in a crappy place doing a crappy job almost all others wouldn’t, then that should be done and recognized as a positive thing for the troops.

Sure he respects the troops. Maybe he thought they had too much when he dropped in a couple of weeks ago. They need to spread the wealth a bit, doncha know.

Considering that the troops in Afghanistan are in the peak of physical condition, an occasional burger would do little in any negative way. At the same time, the occasional burger (reminder of home) has to be a great morale buster.

Oh, H! First runs aren't that great for them; it reminds'em of what they're missing back home!

Let'm be reminded of why they're there. Let'em watch Jack Lemon & Sandy Dennis in The Out of Towners (Oh, my Gawd!) a few dozen times; that'll surely boost morale!

Chip, chip, chip...CRACK!
The sounds of Barack
Working with the Change Gang
Hoping to make America hang!
