Mel Gibson Tirades are the Distilled Violence, Cruelty, & Bigotry of Right-wing Catholic Ideology
Slate ^ | 7/19/10 | Christopher Hitchens

Posted on 07/19/2010 5:44:38 PM PDT by Dr. Scarpetta

Here is a man whose every word and deed is easily explicable once you know the single essential thing about him: He is a member of a fascist splinter group that believes it is the salvation of the Catholic Church.

This schismatic crackpot sect is headed by Mel Gibson's father, Hutton Gibson, a nutty autodidact with a sideline in Holocaust denial.

Like many ultra-conservative Catholics, the Gibsons, père et fils, have never forgiven the Vatican for lifting the charge of deicide against the Jews in 1964.

Less well-remembered, perhaps, is the interview in which he announced that his wife of many years and the mother of his children would not, alas, be able to join him in paradise.

It was not a matter of her moral character. It was simply that she had not seen fit to join the one true church.

Her condemnation, then, was "a pronouncement from the chair."

Gibson has now traded in this long-suffering lady—hopelessly rupturing his sacred marriage vows—for another, younger one, who, to phrase it delicately, was almost certainly not picked for her salient Catholic virtues.

In doing this, he must have had a consciousness, however dim, of having endangered his immortal soul.

Remember `Mad Max’ and the insane cop he played with Danny “Global Warming Causes Earthquakes” Glover in that movie series (name escapes me)?
Mel wasn’t acting. Hitchens is right: Gibson’s as crazy as an outhouse mouse.
And we can find easier Hollywierdos to defend.
Denzel Washington. Kevin Costner, some others. There are a more than a few normal (see: `conservative’) leading actors, we just don’t hear much from them.
As Hitchen’s writes in `Religion Poisons Everything’ Spinoza, Descarte & others—notably the scientist who ground lenses and was served with a fatwah by his own synagogue—they often signed their works anonymously, under a rose (or sub rosa), and agreed that those who hid well, lived well.
Kick this religious screwball to the curb. His act is getting old.

Never been to Peekskill. Several towns around it but not there.

Well might you ask how I, a man from a poor, deservedly obscure Maine paper mill town, know so much about Mel Gibson's home town of Peekskill.

Simple really. As an engineering student, I worked on the town's major tourist attraction, its waste water treatment plant, visiting every quaint street tracing the town's sewer lines.

As soon as I finish freeping you, I shall write the mayor of this moribund municipality suggesting they name the sewage treatment plant after Mel, or Barack Hussein Obama, Jr.

I don’t think anyone is defending Gibson so much as trying to get the truth. Does he have problems? Yep. And I think what the police conclude will be interesting. He’s a colorful character that picked the wrong arm candy.

Well, fwiw I pray for Christopher Hitchens recovery from cancer, he was to go on a book tour to promote his anti religion work.

As for Mel Gibson, I think he needs some effective counseling, it is my view that perhaps he has some issues that need to be resolved.

And it is funny to me that Hitch was chosen to write an article critical of the Catholic Church and supra ordinary Cardinal Jurisdictions, that is a bit like a a vegetarian reviewing steaks at a Ruth Crisp’s..

Not a job I’d want. And the towns that I live near don’t have sewer lines.

Hitchens thinks himself a god and judge. Hmmmm. Hitch....wouldn’t be so quick to judge! AND how dare you attack Braveheart....oh the narcissism in homosexuality was portrayed so perfectly in that movie....it showed how destructive it is to the natural order and how it is all consumed with Lust and idolatry. Hitch wants us to throw out Natural Law and glorify acts that are nihilistic and cause disease and teach children to embrace perverse acts and defy Natural Law. Truth out the window like the “lusting” boyfriend in that great movie!

Virtue leads to true happiness, Hitch—read your classical literature.

Teach children there are NO moral absolutes—like in your godless world—and see what you get. I would even rather abide by Mel’s religion than your hell-hole, Hitch!

Mel did an EXCELLENT job in that Braveheart movie. Longshanks was portrayed as the evil bast*ard that he was......Moral absolutes and character MATTERED-—wow—what a concept in modern movies....evil portrayed as evil and good as good (although not quite perfect.) BTW, I love Churchill and Wilberforce so don’t think I hate the English.

Hate those moral absolutes don’t you, Hitch? NO common sense, Natural Law rules for you, huh?

Moral Absolutes and Shame—It is what made the U.S. so great and successful and so satisfying for families to live and grow up in. The Pope is right; Nietzsche is wrong. Proof in the past....remember, Hitch, utopia can not exist on earth....that should be evident to you even with all your success and money.

I think the fact that homosexuality is loathed is one of the biggest factors against Mel. He is SO un-PC (which is killing the West—isn’t it, Hitch!!!)

Mel probably turned away a myriad of lover boys who drooled at his fabulous body and beautiful face! Bet he made more homosexual enemies than any other kind.

What talent—what a gift from God! Is Mel perfect? Absolutely NOT! But what a lot of great, great things he has done in his life! Thanks, Mel. BTW, I doubt that there is a racist bone in his body. His anger at that slutty Russian woman was probably right on....but he was just as fed up with his own gullible stupidity and the fact that a horrible women will be able to raise his child. He is SICK about that, believe me!

That he hates Jews? Well, maybe he thinks they are not going to be saved but does that make one hate someone? Just because I am a Catholic and think I have the most perfect belief on earth, I don’t hate others....Christianity forbids that.

I understand your hatred for religion because of your mother but that is as nonsensical as Mel’s so-called hatred.

"BS. These are the ravings of an arrogant, pampered Hollywood booze-bag."

Yep. Pretty much. Gibson's Catholicism is just a convenient high-profile opportunity for Hitchen's to display his moronic bigotry.

I am disturbed that FOX News has even mentioned such a tabloid story as the Mel Gibson tapes! I do not tune into FOX To be entertained, but to be informed on issues that may affect my life in America or the world! I would also like to see FOX News interview true conservatives like Duncan L. Hunter, and Thomas Sowell rather than all the RINOs they continually feature. The last bastion is beginning to fall in with the rest of the news Media!

This fact negates any feeble case that Hitchens is attempting to make.

Thanks for posting that. I over looked who wrote it, now I don't have to read any farther.

Mel is just a draft dodger from Peekskill, New York.

No he isn't. Mel was 12 years old in 1968 when his family moved to Australia, and the draft ended in January, 1973, Mel was never in a position to be drafted, or to "dodge" the draft.

If he really is bi-polar then he has less control over his mouth than a drunk would. Jekyll and Hyde is an accurate and literal description of how a bi-polar person can act.

As anyone who’s been on FR very long knows, I’m definitely no friend of the Catholic religion, but I think this drunken tirade from “The Hitch” is ridiculous. Chrissie needs to go back to Syria and gets his tail kicked again - might knock some sense into him.
