Dancing With the Stars: Shock and Awe in the Ballroom (Free Republic blamed)
The Toronto Star ^ | Wednesday, November 17, 2010 | Debra Yeo

The Internet's been buzzing with talk about how members of the U.S. Tea Party movement have been getting out the vote for Bristol Palin on Dancing With the Stars.

The blog Jezebel had a post about it today, complete with quotes from conservative message boards about how Bristol's supporters were exploiting ABC's email voting system to cast multiple ballots for Sarah Palin's daughter.

Jezebel quoted one site, FreeRepublic.com, that urged its members to "make liberal heads explode" by voting for Bristol, "even though she is not the best dancer."

Well, my liberal head is kind of exploding right now because Bristol made the finals on DWTS at the expense of a far superior dancer, Brandy.

And if Bristol thinks she made it just on the quality of her dancing, that's about as believable as seeing Russia from her mother's house. Even if her presence in the final three isn't part of some right-wing voting conspiracy, Bristol's appeal to viewers isn't strictly about skill on the dancefloor.

Maybe it's her youth, what Len Goodman called her vulnerability or the fact she's not typical Hollywood, which is the argument she herself made on Monday's show. And there's no denying she's come a long way since Week 1, given that she had no previous dance experience.

But in my opinion, the three best dancers aren't in the finale and I'm bummed about that.

I haven’t voted for her up till now, in fact I’ve only been dimly aware Bristol was still around.

Starting next week, I think I’ll go ahead and make the dreams come true of the liberals and I’ll be one those who vote early and vote often!

I hear ya. But sometimes it's fun to play their game and poke em until they squeal. LOL

And I don't have a TV. :-)

I have only paid attention this series only recently.

I take into consideration Bristol Palin is not an entertainer & has no background or training (unlike Crybaby Gray or Brandy). Yes, she has been in the spotlight, but not in this type of setting.

As the man said last night, it's not where you begin, but where you are now. Bristol has overcome the largest deficit and made the most improvement. Therefore, she has earned a spot in the finals. If a few liberal heads explode, all the better. :-)

The reactions of Jennifer and Derek was priceless. They both knew it could have easily been them.

DWTS is a pure Voting Democracy in action

Actually, that's not true.

Bristol may actually have lost, several times already. BUT, the producers wanted to gamble on the controversy that keeping Bristol would produce, which would bring more viewers.

IT WORKED.

I understand this position as well. It’s not that I don’t understand a desire to punch them at any given opportunity.

I just feel like the goal is to get to an America in which the best dancer wins. I don’t want to get carried away with the battle and lose sight of the city on the hill.

In other news, if you must watch television, everyone PLEASE watch Apocalypse PA. on the history channel!! I fell in love with that family last night!

Thanks, Bristol - you took one for the team!

The great thing is, Bristol can handle herself in this vortex of negativity. Thank you Bristol - this is difficult, but you are providing the Libs with their own little "teachable moment" and it's GREAT to watch. This kind of thing has been happening on the other side of the isle for soooo long, they feel they DESERVE everything before the votes are in.

I'm sorry this had to happen to Brandy, but I'm sure she'll be a better person for it, IF she chooses to take the high road. If not...she, too will crash and dissolve in her public persona.

I'm so proud of Bristol for being able to handle this all so very well. It's gotta be even tougher for her now. (Course no Lib will ever put themselves in BRISTOL's position, just scream and squirm while wallowing in their OWN injustice)

We now live in a world where Politics is part of entertainment.

NOW? The Romans had us beat in that 'arena'.

If it were really about who was the best dancer, they wouldn't be letting the public vote.

Interesting how the most obvious things are the hardest to see.

She is OK, but certainly not the best. However, if Barack Hussein Obama can win a Nobel Peace Prize after a few weeks in office, I don’t see Bristol Palin winning the Mirror Ball Trophy as such a big deal.

I wish the voting was not part of the show.

The advertisers pay for 'hits' (like on websites). The VOTES are HITS.

If people didn't have the investment of a 'vote', they might not continue watching.

That is the point of having the public vote.

AND, the Producer/Director/Judges make the final determination of who should CONTINUE, not your votes.

Attention! Attention!

The Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy has been discovered to be keeping our beloved and beautiful Bristol in the running in DWTS. The Leftist’s mouths are foaming and their heads are exploding with dilettantish and vituperative ad hominem attacks against us.

Nevertheless the leaders of the VR-WC order you to remain steadfast in your voting for Bristol and encourage your family and friends to also “vote early and vote often” for her.

That is all.

There is a check and balance: The judges.

The three judges' votes count for fifty percent of the total score. Millions of votes by millions of viewers count for the other fifty percent.

Details here at ABC's website.
