Conservatives Peeved After GOP Taps 'Prince of Pork' to Lead Spending Committee

Republicans who captured the House last month in part on the strength of a promise to rein in government spending have tapped a veteran lawmaker known as the "prince of pork" to head the powerful House Appropriations Committee. And the decision's not sitting so well among some conservatives.

Rep. Harold "Hal" Rogers, who earned the "pork" nickname by steering hundreds of millions of federal dollars to projects in his rural district in Kentucky over a 30-year career in Congress, will chair the 60-member Appropriations Committee, the panel responsible for disbursing more than $1 trillion in non-entitlement-program dollars every year.

Rogers beat two other House veterans with a history of securing earmarks, or special projects, for their districts -- former committee chairman Jerry Lewis of California and Jack Kingston of Georgia. All three campaigned for the position by vowing to carry out the GOP's pledge to ban earmarks and stressing that they were the best man to realize Republicans' election promises to drastically slash federal spending.

He is a perfect example why we need term limits.

I remember my kids (20 somethings) worried Sarah Palin would have been infected. It’s a creature of Washington. This needs to be stopped. That’s why I support a 2 term limit across the board for all (good enough for the president, good enough for the rest), and 4 year employment limit for all fed employees with no bonus benefits.

Kill it now, with an amendment.

I dont remember when it was but politics changed when politicians started bragging about how much money they could “bring back home.” Most citizens just want good government, not pork. The only ones interested are the ones who contribute maximum sums and expect pay back.

The same with the Senate, supposedly the august body that was above politics and would tamp down legislation passed by the House during the heat of the moment. Now even Senators campaign on doing “what is best” for their state rather than what is best for the nation.

It probably coincided with when it was discovered that people would actually pay for gimme caps and T shirts. If people would pay to advertise someone else’s product or business surely they wouldn’t mind paid-for politicians.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me for 60 years ...

I have zero sympathy for anyone who would be surprised by this.

Get ready to practice talking about how “Presidential” Romney looks, you poor sheep. That's all you're ever going to get from the GOP.

It’s so liberating knowing we have a conservative government less than a month away. We’ve been hurting so bad here for 8 years. And doing what we did here, we CAN duplicate it nationwide! It’s almost as if Mass went red. That’s how BIG this is.

The mid-terms sent a clear message but they aren’t listening and don’t give a hoot.

A Contract from America was just signed and what do we get… Stimulus II

This is BS

Hal Rogers is an elderly Pork Barrel spender. I try to hope that he’ll spend one term as Chairman and decide to retire while on top.

” I just tried to call Boehner’s office; lines are busy and then, when you get through, his mail box is full. I guess We The People are questioning his “lack” of spine, guts, and gonads. Apparently, Boehner (and the rest of the gutless GOP)”

Don’t forget the other spineless, gutless wonder.... RINO-endorsing McConnell.

The sole purpose of the Republican Party is to serve as an ineffective alternative to the Democrat Party.

For those who have not been following too closely, Chairmen only control committee decisions when a majority of the party members on the committee agree with him. Rogers was elected as chairman of this committee because they still use seniority as part of the selection process, and he wasn’t term limited out like past Chairman Jerry Lewis. meantime they added nine new GOPers to the committee, including anti-earmark hero Jeff Flake and four Tea Party freshmen. The other four are not known as supporters of earmarks. The meetings of the committee should make great C-SPAN viewing.

The GOP term limits committee chairs and ranking members at 3 terms. They can be granted a waiver to continue though.

I think the steering committee chooses the committee chairs not the conference at large.
