Somali Pirates Kill 4 Americans on Hijacked Ship
American Forces Press Service ^ | 02/22/2011 | DoD

Posted on 02/22/2011 7:33:13 AM PST by Allthegoodusernamesaregone

WASHINGTON, Feb. 22, 2011 – Somali pirates killed all four Americans they had held hostage aboard a sailing vessel in the Indian Ocean this morning, U.S. Central Command officials announced.

U.S. officials were negotiating with the pirates for the safe return of the captured Americans when the murders took place, officials said.

Centcom officials said that in the midst of negotiations, U.S. forces responded to gunfire aboard the S/V Quest. When the forces reached the boat, officials said, they discovered all four hostages had been shot by their captors. Despite immediate steps to provide life-saving care, all four hostages ultimately died of their wounds.

During the boarding, the Somali pirates fired on the U.S. forces, who killed two pirates and captured 13 others. U.S. forces already had captured two other pirates, and the servicemembers boarding the Quest found the remains of two other pirates.

“In total, it is believed 19 pirates were involved in the hijacking of the S/V Quest,” Centcom officials said.

“We express our deepest condolences for the innocent lives callously lost aboard the Quest,” said Marine Corps Gen. James N. Mattis, Centcom’s commander.

The pirates seized the boat Feb. 18 off the coast of Oman. Somali pirates -– often operating from mother ships far out to sea -- have captured scores of ships and generally have held the ships and crews for ransom. News reports indicate Somali pirates currently hold 29 ships with more than 660 hostages.

Piracy in the region occurred originally off of Somalia’s east coast for several years. In August 2009, the pirates extended their attacks to the Gulf of Aden, between Yemen and Somalia’s north coast. The pirates since have ranged farther out to sea -– up to 600 miles –- and now affect more than a million square miles in the Gulf of Aden, the west Indian Ocean and the Red Sea.

The United States has worked closely with regional and international partners to attack the problem. In this case, American forces closely monitored and tailed the Quest. Four U.S. Navy warships made up a response force dedicated to recovering the S/V Quest: the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, the guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf, the guided-missile destroyers USS Sterett and USS Bulkeley.

Leave Bambi alone - can’t you see he’s trying to eat his waffles!

In all seriousness - an RPG was fired at a US Navy warship and four American citizens were murdered. That is a direct declaration of war and the response should be swift and clear! Unfortunately, the enuch-in-chief will probably bring the pirates to the US and give them court appointed public defenders at taxpayer expense!

I have to wonder - what do you think Sarah Palin would do?

Keel Haul them. A serious punishment when performed on a an aircraft carrier.

Seriously, as soon as it had been determined the hostages had been shot, every last one of the pirates should have suffered the same fate. The ghosts of Teddy Roosevelt and General "Black Jack" Pershing are rolling in their graves.

Even Jimmy Carter would know. Seriously.

Seriously, no he wouldn't. Carter? Who actually asked the Delta Force Commander (Colonel "Chargin' Charlie" Beckwith) before the ill fated hostage rescue attempt in 1979 if there was any way for the Delta Operators to shoot the guns from the hands of the terrorists so as to avoid a loss of life among the terrorists! I read that in the late Charlie Beckwith's book on the formation of Delta Force.

Interesting that you ignored the first comment on that same site (at least first for me, maybe different at different times):

If they carried .50 machine guns, they could easily be detached from their mounts and stowed in an armory on board when entering port, if that was an issue. I really don't think merchant ships need big deck guns, the .50 has much longer range than a rocket propelled grenade or an AK47, which are the weapons of choice for these so called 'pirates'. As long as the merchantmen are alert at all times to incoming unidentified vessels, they could easily defend themselves with .50 M2HB's, one of the best mechanical devices ever made by John Moses Browning, who designed it back in 1918. The fact it's still in service today tells you what a remarkable machine it is, and with a maximum effective range of 1.2 miles, it would be more than a match for these dumb teenage Somali's waving their RPG's and AK's.

And notice I myself (though no Navy man) suggested 50 cal machine guns earlier in this thread.

I wasn't taking the text as fact just posting it with the link for you all to examine as I always try to do.
The specific answer I posted sounded familiar as I heard it before. There still is this problem:

7) pirates use surprise attacks with speed boats. Often the small crews of freightors don't even know the pirates are attacking until they're already climbing on board, even before that the boats can go 35 mph, which actually makes a fairly hard target to hit.”

These people were not in Somali waters or even that near to them. The pirates have captured ships and crews simply going about their business of shipping goods.

This has been going on since before 2005. They say there are 1000 pirates. Just how long will the world sit on their axx without doing something to put an end to this? I don't understand why every shipping nation in the world doesn't coordinate and use decoys and then squash them like roaches. Don't free them to strike again, just kill them.

BTW Some of you may accept everything that government tells you, but I'm not in that camp. So I'm not convinced that we know the real story yet if ever.

You are right, #7 is not addressed in the comment regarding 50 cal machine guns.

I don’t sail so I don’t know much about radar, and we are talking now of 2 different kinds of craft, commercial and yachting.

Thinking of commercial craft, is it unreasonable to expect the radar screen to be manned at all times? Are there automatic alarms that could be in place?

I don’t know the answer to these questions.

Here is an interesting article about this couple if it hasn’t been posted.

http://www.sail-world.com/CruisingAus/index.cfm?SEID=2&Nid=80430&SRCID=0&ntid=0&tickeruid=0&tickerCID=0

I was a little critical of these people for taking this risk and but I’ve since become critical of a USA and world that would allow this lawless scum to persist just like Mexican drug lords.

They need to run armed decoys (with the latest mil communications equipment and armed discreetly with mini guns and HMGs.) When they attempt to attack, then take them out without prisoners.

RE :"I don’t sail so I don’t know much about radar, and we are talking now of 2 different kinds of craft, commercial and yachting."

I would guess that surface ships commercial radars would have trouble picking up small boat craft against the water which can act as interference. But I dont have one myself, or a boat. If I had one I wouldnt be near that coast without a US military escort, at least the US Coast guard.

I have a solution. In fact, I have a solution for everything lately. Nobody will listen to me, but I still have solutions.

Here's how to solve the piracy problem in the Gulf of Aden. If we determine that Somali pirates have killed our citizens, then within 72 hours we should fly a squadron of B-1Bs over their ports and at least one population center and drop ordinance....LOTS of it. After the third or fourth time, they'll start to pick up on the pattern of getting the crap bombed out of them after being caught committing piracy.

Bomb them back to whatever is pre-stone-age. They think it sucks there now? We can make it suck more.

...except for our week leadership which sympathizes and even gives aid and comfort to the enemies of our Republic.

Nobody wants me in charge. We'd have WW-III a lot sooner than it's going to happen anyway.

As for these victims... it's tragic and unjust for certain. But irrespective of the law, WHO in their right mind goes into that area unarmed? Sheesh...there are a hundred ways to hide half a dozen AKs or M4s on a vessel that size.

I read excerpts from Beckwith's book. It shows just how disconnected Carter and his ilk are. They live in a world that simply doesn't exist. It's totally invented in their liberal/idealist minds and moreover this, it's DANGEROUS. As if that's not bad enough, they're charged with the general safety and defense of a nation and their own grave misconceptions of reality factor in their POOR decisions and actions.

Worse than this though, people keep voting them into office.

Our comments are more effort than this administration will put into justice.

My first instinct is why do we have any living pirates? Yes, decency and all that but how decent were they? They are not innocents.

The welfare of these thugs and murdering miscreants will cost us millions upon millions. Why? Why aren’t they just dead?

But anyway I consider this question of timeliness of attack-detection to be utterly irrelevant to the question of whether or not I should be allowed to defend myself.

You post lookouts, you do a spot-check-watch... whatever.

But if you are ARMED you have a chance. Doesn’t mean you’re 100% safe. Where are you 100% safe? Nowhere.

But you should have the RIGHT to be ARMED. Period.

RE :”But anyway I consider this question of timeliness of attack-detection to be utterly irrelevant to the question of whether or not I should be allowed to defend myself.

The original assumption was that the Federal government outlaws arming the crew, which I was suspicius of. I believe the answer at that post was that it is legal for them to either have small arms, or guns not visible mounted. It's just that the ship owners don't allow it for a variety of reasons, which may or may not be valid.

I personally wouldnt want to be in that area without professionally trained armed fighters as an escort. Life is not an action movie where the dumb blond stripper mows down the pirates with a machine gun (Under Siege (1992) ). More like she would accidently shoot the crew.

This situation reminds me of the Clinton Black Hawk Down episode. We evenually fled Somalia. This really is a US military problem.

Worse than this though, people keep voting them into office.

Those folks who keep voting for the liberals are merely tools of the liberals and their strangle hold on public education. They inseminate (and yes, that is exactly the word I mean) their views of liberal group-think and the distinct lack of any sort of absolute morality into the minds of our children so that by the time these kids finish (or are finished BY) college; liberalism is ingrained into their very nature. It's a massive setup by the father of Lies that began in the late 1950s and we never saw it coming. Now it is paying off in hugely Satanic dividends. As generation after generation is more and more liberally indoctrinated and those new professionals seep into the institutions that produced them (like teaching) it becomes a self generating machine. Don't worry, the end is almost in sight. RAPTURE READY?

ma duce and tracers, along with being aware of yer surroundings while in 'indian' country would make the pirates think twice...

its my understanding that the biggest prob is the various gun laws in differing countries, and many/most wouldnt allow even stowed/locked guns in their waters, much less in port, with penalties that make NYC look like candyland for any offense...

kinda screwed unless yer willin to toss yer weapons overboard everytime time ya make port...

I remember my neighbors (and FNC BoR) telling me years ago that ethanol and windmills would make us energy independent. Try putting that windmill on a jet-liner.

Well said brother! I've got three youngsters here at the house all 20 or younger. We saw what was going on in public schools when we returned from USAFE after almost all of the 1990s and DODS education system. The kids spent a year in public schools in Alabama, then about a year in N.C. and we became aware of things. When we tried to bring them to the attention of the school authorities, we were treated like rebels. So we pulled the two out that were in school at the time ON THE SPOT. One here (16 now) has never set foot in a public school. We homeschool and just didn't look back. We teach God's Word as the truth here, keep weapons (firearms) in the school, and prepare them to be functioning, adaptive, self motivated leaders.

The difference between mine (and others like mine) and public school kids is generally staggering. There's simply no comparison. Most parents have no idea what sorts of strategies are in place in public schools to gain control of the hearts and minds of their young people. It's satanic for certain and produces a self perpetuating corrupt individual who wouldn't know the truth if it smacked him between the eyes.

As a matter of fact, things are are indeed moving aren't they though! There's definitely a global power shift occurring right NOW. Our currency will soon collapse, Blue States are going to be very nasty places soon! Revelation 17:17 comes to mind...power shifting globally.

Liberalism is Satanic. The proof is in their actions and means. Observe them when they don't get what they want. They get angry...violent even. James wrote that anger is not of God and that it never produces godly fruit.

People should indeed be concerned. They SHOULD call on The Lord. What else is there? Our own nation is falling around us. Nobody knows whether they're going to have a job in another week. Every day that passes, we become reduced. Yet, people continue to trust things that waste and decline... unlike God and His promises which remain true.

A lot of people won't listen though... they'll hide in bunkers and stock up on food and ammo... Isiah 2:19 - 21 says a whole lot about this! Most people miss it though.

Anyway... that was a good word! Thanks!

Is it possible that the pirates would stop if Obama publicly apologized for some past grievance on our part? Maybe they just dont understand that with Obama as president we ALL are citizens of the world now. Maybe some sort of sensitivity training would help. Or he could tax the merchant ships to pay off the pirates like we do with criminals in the US Cities. Good old fashioned redistribution can fix anything.

There must be a misunderstanding here. All people are good, except maybe racists/sexist/homophobes like conservatives, Christians, white males and Tea party protesters, ...and CEOs, unless they own green companies like Gore.

See how easy it is ?? :)

I think it's possible to deter them. They can't be completely stopped. Not in this age. Unfortunately, piracy PAYS...big time. If Commanding Officers on naval vessels which catch them started summarily executing them and documenting it and publicizing it well, that would be a good start. But with our current leadership it's a lot like spitting in one hand and wishing in the other. Guess which one is going to fill first? :-)

Interesting...hanging them on deck, videotaped, with a sign strapped to their chest “PIRATE”, then literally throwing them overboard to the waiting Tigers, Makos, and Hammerheads swimming below (after suitably chumming the water).

Then posting it on Youtube...sorta like those animals did to Nick Berg and Daniel Pearl.

But do all this AFTER a summary trial so it’s “fair and balanced” for the media assjackets...

I like it!!

Since you bring up the PRC I have to change the subject enough to wonder out loud who are the more evil villains, the Somali Pirates, the PRC commercial operations in Africa that use slave labor, or the African countries that allow the PRC to operate their slave-labor enterprises.

I’ll be as happy as the next guy if the PRC massacres a few tens or few hundred or few thousand pirates... but I’ll also always remember that the PRC has many thousands of Africans in chains on the African continent. They are not good people.

Yep... just hang them on deck...after the trial, and document it well for publicity and records keeping afterwards.

I seriously appreciate your confidence, but nobody would ever vote for me. :-) Nobody wants me around unless something is in SERIOUS BAD need of fixing, destroying or killing. People are usually at their wits end and hopeless by the time they ask me or anybody like me. I'm the last type to get involved...EVER, and when I get asked, things are always very bad. That's the way my life has been for the past 30 years or so. I've become "accustomed" to it, but I wouldn't say I'm used to it. It's frustrating because I watch things digress and try to warn others, but they simply don't perceive it. I can pretty much guess when I'm going to get the call.

:-)

The problem is with international laws of the sea and the agreements signed. Commercial ships cannot be armed, or fight their way out of bad situations, nor enter ports armed.

The US should set the standard and allow commercial shipping with militia type weapons on board, even small cannon -- 30 mm.

“...hanging the pirates before throwing them to the sharks...”

Well, there’s something MORE gruesome about seeing a lifeless, flopping, linp body thrown overboard like just so much trash, to waiting eating machines below.

Throwing them ALIVE to the sharks is sorta barbaric...that’s something THEY’D do, and we’re not them, ya know?

And besides...the Mooj have this thing about hanging...it bugs the sh*t outta them for some reason...”common criminal” deal or something insulting.

But it’s all just pissing in the wind right now. We’ve got no one with any balls in command positions to take these kinds of actions to make a statement to these animals.

We have a Feckless Douchebag sockpuppet running around apologizing for us instead.

OH-OH, I was thinking those PRC bastards were smart for taking care of themselves first. Maybe not the ideal model for us, but certainly a contrast to a certain country that appears to have it’s head.....

Heck, we go into Somalia on a humanitarian mission and get out butts kicked by a few lowlifes, and they (PRC) are in Africa buying off the leaders, taking over the country and using the people as servants getting $$$ for it.

But then again Cartman was always my favorite South Park character.
