Herman Cain jumps to second among Republican candidates, according to Zogby poll
Yahoo News ^

Posted on 05/24/2011 3:15:30 PM PDT by mandaladon

Former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain placed a surprising second in a Zogby poll of likely Republican primary voters released Tuesday.

The poll measured support for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who says he will not run, at 17 percent. Cain was preferred by 14 percent and Texas Rep. Ron Paul by 10 percent.

The results place Cain well ahead of many leading candidates, and come on the heels of a strong performance in Fox News’ May 5 primary debate in South Carolina. Cain was one of five participants.

Candidates widely considered frontrunners all received less than ten percent support.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was supported by 9 percent of respondents and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich by 7 percent. [ For complete coverage of politics and policy, go to Yahoo! Politics ]

Businessman Donald Trump, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels were all supported by four percent.

Zogby also asked respondents to select the candidates that they would never vote for.

Trump led the “never” field with 50 percent, followed by Gingrich at 36 percent, Palin at 36 percent, Huckabee at 34 percent, Paul at 32 percent, and Romney at 27 percent.

The poll was administered online, a different method than used in most scientific polls. There were 1,377 respondents and a calculated margin of error of +/- 2.7 percent.

IOW, Cain is leading since Christie will not run.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was supported by 9 percent...

Way too much for sensible voters.

Must be dimocrats who are fed up with the messiah.

That’s gotta sting if you are supporting one of those candidates or possible candidates.

I wish Herman Cain the best of luck. He will need a thick skin as he pursues his campaign as he is going to get called a lot of things worse than Uncle Tom by the Democrat plantation crowd as he voices sensible, race-blind policy proposals. If eventually elected, it will be by the vote of those who are not his skin brethren.

Second? That's ridiculous. Republicans are a bunch of racists.

Oh, I know. They don't realize he's black.

Making a lot of enemies may mean you espouse lousy policies, or it may mean you’re taking flak right over the target. The “whys” would surely differ between those who currently say “never” to Huckabee or Romney and “never” to Palin.

I’m not sure how a two-week-old poll is “Breaking News”, but ok....

The polls are meaningless until the field sorts itself out. When a sizeable percentage supports candidates who aren’t running, it’s not a good predictor af any future voting.

I agree. Cain had a whole $13 when he appeared on Cavuto a couple days ago. Maybe he’s up to $20!

I like the guy but be real, it’s NOT his time. These polls are being used to manipulate the republican primaries, don’t fall for it.

The Zogby Poll is not an interactive poll.
