Gov. Scott's actions could prove to be a boon for political foes (Florida)

Helen Gordon Davis is a former state representative and senator. She championed judicial reforms, joined the NAACP as its first white female member in Florida and lobbied on behalf of homemakers who suddenly found themselves without a source of income.

This year, the 84-year-old Floridian gave $100,000 to the American Civil Liberties Union because she's angry at Gov. Rick Scott and the Legislature for a number of new laws they signed off on this spring. She's hoping the group will use her money along with other donations to challenge the changes in court.

The ACLU has already followed through, filing a pair of lawsuits against the Scott administration this month, and promising more. Fighting back is exactly what Davis wants.

"I am not a rich woman, but I feel so strongly about it," the Tampa Democrat said in an interview with the Sun Sentinel.

Scott, a novice Republican politician, swept into office with the support of Florida tea parties that have largely backed some of his major initiatives. Those include testing welfare recipients for drugs , merit pay for teachers, making public employees contribute to pensions and budget cuts.

But while pleasing supporters, Scott's actions so far appear to have won over few of his ideological foes or Floridians on the fence and may prove a boon to the largely left-of-center activists and Democratic politicians who oppose him.

The statewide teachers' union, a major financial backer of Democratic candidates, saw its rolls swell by about a thousand members this spring, when Scott and the Legislature were cutting school budgets and ramming through controversial teacher merit pay legislation.

The AFL-CIO labor organzation, which also typically supports Democrats, just held a festival in Orlando that drew about 6,000 people interested in grassroots organizing.

Wishful thinking based on talking to the commies in the teachers unions.

An 84-year-old who can give $100,000 to the ACLU is very rich. Most 84-year-olds couldn’t spare $84 to the Obama campaign, could they?

Anyone who would donate a penny to the ACLU is just evil.

Funny isn’t it. You would think at 84 she would be worried about her end-of-life expenses but Noooo she’s got to spend her money on making sure the rest of us are enslaved in her redistribution scheme long after she is dead and buried.

It’s her religion. Probably one of those who messed up on the ballot in 2000.

“A former (Democrat) state legislator and senator” - oh, that’s where she came up with the $100,000 to donate. She’s been ripping-off taxpayers.

I could be wrong...but wouldn't this fit the profile of someone who would never vote for a republican in the first place?

What a load of self-serving crap. The fact that Scott is a Republican who is actually living up to his campaign promises and rolling back decades of "progressive" marxism is enough to send these creatures into a foaming-mouth frenzy. They have done nothing but attack him from day one.

He said he was going to run the government like a business, and that's exactly what he's doing. Nothing will send lefties and their lackey media into a homicidal rage quicker.

Every one of them can burn in hell.

The great thing about Rick Scott is that he is keeping all his campaign promises. We was elected on the basis of these promises and the Socialists hate him. I’m guessing the rank and file silent majority voters who elected him are happy with his agenda. I know I am.

Reading the comments following the article shows you are right. As expected, the liberals hate him and the conservatives love him.

LOL! IOW, an East Coast SanFran Nan.

Tampa is filled with frothing liberals to the left of Mao, and they are in for a rocky time controlling their total loss of control here.

C.A.I.R. has a headquarters there for that very reason.

How many times do you see that the most important thing to a full on liberal is their political ideology. Nothing is above it & that's the battle when opposing them. They are in to win at ALL costs.

that what struck me too.
84 years ol, and then states she is not very rich, these left wing loons are really nuts, so donating a hundred grand is not having a lot of money

Then there was the comments, the same old lies by the left like “I voted for scott but won’t now as he has ruined this state” or
I voted for him and I have always voted for the republicans but now I will not”

These nuts still think people believe their lies

yea yea yea long time republicans now pissed off with the GOP, YEA RIGHT

the comments are the usual, a handful of left wing nuts who tell lies like they are long time republicans but will not vote for the GOP because of Scott or they voted for Scott but he has ruined the state and they know many other republicans who feel like them

what utter horse crap, they’re left wing hacks trolling left wing media outlets to make it look Scott and conservatives are not the majority.

To think if we had got rid of Soros and sent him back to Russia when we could have then these nutty lying trolls would not be doing this job and be out of money

The statewide teachers' union, a major financial backer of Democratic candidates, saw its rolls swell by about a thousand members this spring, when Scott and the Legislature were cutting school budgets and ramming through controversial teacher merit pay legislation.

Florida's next piece of legislation needs to copy the Wisconsin legislation barring payroll deduction of union dues from public employees (make the unions bill members directly, and try to collect), and giving members a yearly vote to de-certify the union.
