If you’re still not using any of the privacy settings on Facebook, here’s the most compelling reason why you need to change that as soon as possible. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has given the thumbs up to Social Intelligence Corp, which keeps files of Facebook users’ posts as part of a background-checking service for screening job applicants. The FTC decided Social Intelligence complies with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the same set of rules that keeps your bill-payment records on file with the consumer bureaus for seven years, according to Forbes. That’s how long your social media postings remain in Social Intelligence’s records. Even if you delete an embarrassing photo or bawdy status update, the material could stay in your file for seven years, during which time it might be used against you if a prospective employer were to use the agency’s services to screen applicants. This ups the ante on prospective employers simply Googling you or even looking for you on Facebook and other sites — by now, many job hunters know enough to clean up their profiles when looking for work. Social Intelligence would have the goods on you before you cleaned up your online act, dating back seven years. We can only suspect that if Social Intelligence has the go-ahead to operate in this capacity, other start-ups might follow. That’s all the more reason to err on the safe side and use Facebook’s privacy settings to their fullest. Readers, does learning about services like Social Intelligence make you want to recheck your security settings or start using them if you haven’t done so already?

And I think ALL of us know that Employers first check F/B and MS and TW — that beer bong night is cached FOREVER, whether someone saved it or not (there are techniques you can use to hit Google and yahoo cache).
There’s 0 information to get about me at any county office.

I think so, yes. But I am splitting the difference. I post no info on F/B (not even comments to my tiny circle of family and friends). I don’t expand it and am not looking to do much more than stay in touch with my family and very close friends.
I won’t post a damn thing — I think this is the best we can do. My family is scattered all across the USA and all our attempts to put together shared sites have failed.
But F/B security clearly has some HUGE bugs — I can’t explain the increase in spam otherwise.

That is my biggest irritation. You have to keep track and also warn your friends (a good reason to keep the circle small) NOT to post things like “remember the time we...”
If I see it degenerating, I will delete the account and call it a failed experiment.

I predict that this ruling by the FTC will ultimately result in the establishment of a new “sociability rating” similar to the current credit rating system used by lenders.
How long before we must actively monitor our “sociability” score in order to get/keep a job, obtain a security clearance, gain entrance to colleges and organizations, etc.?
Don’t work for an employer that would use such a screening criteria. Publicize those that do and ostracize them. I cannot understand why people assume such a posture of helplessness in the face of such an outrage. If they have a problem with something you’ve said, say it louder!

This very moment the local news (Fox btw) ran a story that people who are not on FB face “smaller social networks” (ya think??) and “less likely to vote” (needs a look at the methodology).
But there is that possibility — THX1138 suggested that the Medicine cabinet would track your drug use to make sure you are taking the ones the State determined it wanted you to take (to make you docile).
How long before NOT having FB (maybe StateBook?) makes you “obsolete” and “an enemy of the State?” (that will be the moment I delete my ID and go off the grid for good).
The same culture of corruption that has led to rampant identity theft in this country. The sale of personal social security numbers, banking information, employment information, property values, etc.
It’s one thing to walk into a court house, register to look a the records, and transcribe a figure or two, it’s another to download them wholesale and sell them to anyone and everyone.
This sh*tstorm’s been brewing since the 1980s when the lobbyists for commercial mailings bought congress.
