Boehner Calls Rush Limbaugh, Gives Details of Negotiations With Reid, McConnell
Monday, July 25, 2011 | Kristinn

Posted on 07/25/2011 10:11:01 AM PDT by kristinn

Rush Limbaugh said Speaker of the House John Boehner phoned him this morning around 10:30 to brief him on the latest news about his negotiations with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to raise the nation's debt ceiling.

Limbaugh told about the conversation on his nationally syndicated radio program. Boehner said there is a two-tier plan in the works. Step one would cut $1.1 trillion in spending with a $1 trillion increase in the debt that would get the government to April 2012 with no tax increases.

The next tier would be recommended cuts by a joint House-Senate committee made by twelve members, six from each chamber with three each appointed by each leader, Boehner, Reid, McConnell and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Limbaugh said that McConnell is now on the same page as Boehner.

Well, I posted an article with June instead of JULY this AM...and the moderator caught it and corrected it. Mine wasn’t that obvious...so I posted a comment on the thread...yours was that obvious.

My prediction: Obama will raise the debt ceiling himself and claim he’s covered by the 14th.

Clinton told him to do it and deal with the courts later. He advised the POTUS to intentionally and knowingly break the law and wait for the courts to slap him down. Unbelievable.

Perhaps I’m overly optimistic, but this is probably the best we can hope for with The Tool in the White House and the Dems controlling the Senate.

I’d LOVE to have to revisit this in April next year, it keeps the Democrats, and, specifically, Obama, on the defensive.

Which is why Obama wants a solution that lasts until about November 9 of 2012.

“This is devastating. Boehner has caved.”
ABSOLUTELY CORRECT...

Repubs are TERRIFIED this will turn in to another Gingrich shutdown debacle, and are presenting a deal that both sides can claim “VICTORY!” with.

Only it won’t be the Republicans the MEdia will be saying “WON!”, it will be Democrats.

HOW FUGGING STUPID ARE THESE PEOPLE???

The Donks don't quit this easily.

They have to. They're counting the votes. They HAVE to do this to get it through the House. And even in the Senate they don't have a lot of strength because of the 15 Red State Dems up for re-election.

It's always been about the votes. Everything else is hot air.

This COULD be as good as we could hope for, and having to revisit while Obama is actively campaigning for re-election is a GOOD thing.

This is how they are going to marginalize the tea party temporarily.

Fixed.

Not sure what this “Super Congress” is...to me, it just sounds like another fancy BS committee where they talk about sh*t all day with no real results.

It's where the Republicans go to cave - nicely.

The next tier would be recommended cuts by a joint House-Senate committee made by twelve members, six from each chamber with three each appointed by each leader, Boehner, Reid, McConnell and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

They want a BRAC-type system in which this "commission" comes up with cuts and taxes and Congress then has to take it or leave it with no debate or amendment, probably by voice votes.

Like BRAC, this would protect individual Congress critters from having to cast politically-dangerous individual votes and shield them from the resulting wrath of their constituents.

No more commissions. Period.

Found a little Washington Post poll:

Is the GOP being responsible or irresponsible in the debt debate?
Responsible - 44% (2128 votes)
Irresponsible - 56% (2762 votes)
Total Votes: 4,890

So the House tea partiers have thrown in the towel?

From reading this thread, it seems a lot of FReepers have too. Obama gets what he wants, an increase in the debt ceiling, and Citizens get squat, thanks again to the "leadership" of the weak, effete, Republican elite.

Boehner has caved.

Nonsense. Boehner's gotten exactly what he wanted. Cuts equal to the debt ceiling with NO tax hikes.

PLUS he's also apparently getting 1) a vote on the balanced budget amendment and

2) continuing discussion on cuts in an election year which Obama did not want.

So what exactly is Obama getting? Nothing.

We’ve got the ability to hold Congressional Dems feet to the fire and make a good deal without President Fool Sucka.

Maybe I will never win this debate on here but as long as the GOP is offering up only $1 trillion in cuts over 10 years, this is not a DEM/GOP issue.

As Rand Paul said, the DEMS want to cut nothing and the GOP wants to cut next to nothing. I view the GOP position as the most disingenuous, leading people to believe the GOP is doing something about it when in fact it is not.

Nothing short of actually solving the problem will win me over. If Boehner proposes $1 trillion in cuts this fiscal year, I will be swayed to the GOP position. Short of that, it is nothing more than pandering and political grandstanding.

No thinking person should be swayed by charade. Nobody should be waving partisan pom poms until the this very serious problem is taken seriously.

I applaud the work Boehner is doing. As much as people want more progress in tackling the spending, we are still one election away.

Chad Pergram at Fox News has details of plan that Boehner will brief GOP House conference at 2 p.m. It tracks with what Boehner told Limbaugh:

SNIP

--Cuts That Exceed The Debt Hike. The framework would cut and cap discretionary spending immediately, saving $1.2 trillion over 10 years (subject to CBO confirmation), and raise the debt ceiling by less - up to $1 trillion.

SNIP

--Entitlement Reforms & Savings. The framework creates a Joint Committee of Congress that is required to report legislation that would produce a proposal to reduce the deficit by at least $1.8 trillion over 10 years. Each Chamber would consider the proposal of the Joint Committee on an up-or-down basis without any amendments. If the proposal is enacted, then the President would be authorized to request a debt limit increase of $1.6 trillion.

--No Tax Hikes.

(Had to exceprt. More details at source link.)

No.

Cuts to be determined in the future are NO BUDGET CUTS, period.

The debt ceiling is raised, which means the Democrats win!

Once again, the Republicans have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat!

Ok, $1.4 Trillion per year in deficit spending. $1.1 Trillion in cuts over 10 years.

Am I missing something?
