Battleground Poll: Is the Conservative Movement Losing Momentum?
American Thinker ^ | September 8, 2011 | Bruce Walker

The latest Battleground Poll numbers have been released. There have been more than twenty Battleground Polls over the last ten years, and the most consistent datum in these polls has been the response to Question D3, which asks Americans to identify their ideology. Sixty percent of Americans called themselves "very conservative" or "somewhat conservative," while thirty-six percent of Americans called themselves "very liberal" or "somewhat liberal." The Lilliputian "moderate" or "refused/don't know" has seldom for either been higher than two percent.

The poll taken in late August 2011 appears to show a trend away from this overwhelming conservative majority. Question D3 in this poll shows a decade-low fifty-five percent of Americans call themselves conservative while the percentage of Americans who call themselves liberal has risen to a decade-high thirty-nine percent. If the numbers in all the past polls had not been so extremely consistent, regardless of how Americans felt on other issues or about political leaders, this sudden jolt would not be particularly curious.

Conservatives heartened by past responses to Question D3 could look at the latest Battleground Poll and compare it to the last Battleground Poll before May 2011 and wonder if the conservative movement was not beginning to lose some steam. The May poll showed that fifty-seven percent of Americans called themselves conservative and thirty-seven percent of Americans called themselves liberals. The May 2011 numbers showed a slight diminishing of conservative support in America over prior Battleground Poll data.

Yet, if this was a trend, it was in stark contrast to what Gallup had been reporting. Last month Gallup polling showed that conservatives were not only the largest ideological group in America but that more Americans were conservative than in at least twenty years. As I have observed before, Gallup is not exactly enthusiastic about polls which...

Maybe I missed it, but why did the Battleground Poll change their sampling methodology?

Just wait until that poll in November 2012 from Sarah Palin's front porch.

Seems odd in light of other contrasting facts.

You mean, when she is interviewed as a guest at Gov. Perry’s Victory Party?

Yes, BG shifted left in 2008 and has been a Dem party polling operation ever since. I think the Left wing George Washington Univ run it and GW is a hard left.
Its useless now.

They need to look at Anthony wienies seat for how we are losing momentum. We are the Lefts worst nightmare. And it is getting worse for them because their president is real bad.

In September, 2007 the GOP front-runners were Rudy Giulliani and Fred Thompson.

CFR-Ric is already wearing thin.

The minute Sarah declares, CFE-Ric starts fading into the background like one of his tacky pink ties.

Conservatives are the only politicians who are capable of making the hard decisions that have to be made to save this country. Progressive Republicans don’t understand the importance of downsizing government and liberating the private sector anymore than liberals do. They only understand big government and more big government. It is their solution for every problem.

Methinks we didn’t read the article, but stopped at the headline, given the comments here. (I do that too.) The entirety of the story is VERY informative and quite telling in that we are coming on strong. They would like to demoralize us.

And the way they shifted the results to the left is by polling younger voters.

Battleground Poll, Question D3

The Battleground poll, by the way, is the bipartisan poll, Ed Goeas on the Republican side, Celinda Lake on the Democrat side, and their questions never change.

Last that I heard, it was still a bipartisan poll.

So, the famous battleground poll has finally succumbed to the allure of the dark side? I’m sorry, but my lying eyes tell me that things are far worse for liberals than they’ve been in twenty years.

You mean when she is giving an interview to Greta on the outcome of the election as a paid Fox News contributor?

Hmm... He's already thinking of inviting President Palin to Austin to help him celebrate his winning a fourth term as Texas Governor? Now that's what I call planning ahead!

Kinda weird that they would ask that. What could have changed? Bachmann and Palin are the two conservative stars in our group of candidates. Now something happened a bit ago and now we have another candidate.......coincidence that suddenly they are saying we are losing our conservative stronghold? hummmmmmmmmmm. Something to think about.

Could be statistical noise.

It is a trend worth keeping an eye on though.

Now that was very cute. Even rockinright you must have thought that was pretty good. See humor is good. Truth is President Palin will be President in 2012. The problem with Perry is that he is an unknown throughout most of the U.S. They had 5 million people watch the debate. So Texas and 5 million know who this Perry guy is. Similar to Thompson. Most did not know him but for Law and Order and that was not enough to get him the nomination. Everyone knows President Palin!!!!!

For years the number identifying as conservative has been around 40 percent and the number identifying as liberal/socialist around 20%. The rest were “moderates.” Moderates are people who are mad at both parties or who like the attention of the media as being special. But they are really conservatives and liberals. Looks to me like the moderates split between conservatives and commies because Obama has polarized the country.

As the population of immigrants grows, the ones identifying as socialists will increase and the ones identifying as conservatives will decrease. They don’t teach about the constitution and freedom in schools anymore and the immigrants will be totally stupid.
