Calif. bill would protect unlicensed drivers from arrest
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 9/11/11 | Vivian Ho, Chronicle Staff Writer

A bill loaded with immigration politics and potential implications for highway safety has landed on Gov. Jerry Brown's desk.

The legislation by Assemblyman Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, would change police procedures at drunken-driving checkpoints, prohibiting officers from arresting drivers and immediately impounding their cars if their only offense is not having a license.

Supporters say the bill, AB353, would impose a consistent policy statewide - some agencies confiscate unlicensed drivers' cars now, and some do not - while keeping DUI checkpoints from being turned into traps for otherwise law-abiding illegal immigrants who cannot obtain licenses.

"In most parts of California, you basically have to have a car," said Mark Silverman, director of immigration policy at the Immigrant Legal Resource Center. "You have to be able to drive to survive, to get anywhere. Because of that, the truth is, immigrant drivers without licenses will be driving anyway because of the necessity. The towing of cars will not stop people from driving."

But for families who have lost loved ones because of unlicensed drivers, the bill would endanger everyone who uses the roads.

ILLEGAL ALIENS are the ones who cannot get a DL in California. This scumbag assemlyman is shilling for illegals.

Which was pretty much my point, but I was noting the connotation in the article that immigrants are being put upon by these draconian laws and it's just so hard for them.. It is hard starting in a new country. But it's also insulting that illegal aliens keep being given all these benefits, while those who went through the process to immigrate here are kept to the side.

Take for example the latest iteration of the DREAM act.. If your parents cheat the system, cut the line, and you go to school here, you can get state resident rates and state financial aide, whereas if you legally immigrated here, you likely wouldn't qualify, even though you worked hard to get here, and did it legally, the illegal still pushes ahead of you. Once a line cutter, always a line cutter.

I agree with this that there should be a state wide law that impounds all vehicles of people without driver’s licenses.

If only a California idea of no drivers licenses would spread nationwide.

No more having to have papers in order to drive.

Papers to vote, yes.
Papers to drive, no.

Only WHITE PEOPLE will be required to have Drivers licenses in California before it’s through.

How soon until Chistians must display a cross so they can be easily identified by the Gestapo... err... Democrat Party?

I remember as a kid during the Cold War and they told me the Soviet Union had checkpoints where you had to show your papers. I had no idea then that such unconstitutional abominations would actually occur here only a few decades later. Guess those guys landed on the beaches of Normandy for nothing.

They guys didn’t land on the beaches of Normandy to fight Communism and in the US, one has always had to show papers for various reasons.

From renting videos to going through customs.

Assemblyman Gil Cedillo should be serving in the Mexican government not ours. Of course with the Democrats in California and the non-existent Republican opposition, he essentially is.

Maybe a drunken illegal without a license will DUI, strike and kill Gill. That would solve California’s problem for awhile.

Why stop there? Just outlaw all laws in Kalifornia and be done with it. I’m very sorry for the decent and civilized people who live there; they’re outnumbered by the freaks.

Just when you think Californians can't get any stupider, they always manage to surprise you.

And if you really want to see Californians in a tizzy, point out how unsophisticated they are. "Unsophisticated" is the worst thing you can be in California--probably because on some level they realize that that's exactly what they are. It's denial.

Apologies to all you intelligent, sophisticated FR Californians. I was once one myself.

"Why stop there? Just outlaw all laws in Kalifornia and be done with it."

This is what they have done de facto. It's part of a Leftist strategy to establish a de facto totalitarian government there.

They overwhelm the judicial system with so many laws that the laws cannot be enforced. Then law enforcers can decide which to enforce and which to ignore.

If they like you, they let you break whatever laws you wish--with impunity.

If they don't like you, they can enforce draconian laws--with impunity.

The Left loves it! It's a great license to bully! And if the Left aspirest to anything, it's bullying those whom they don't like.

Liberal quislings enabling foreign occupation. California is lost and calling it an invasion makes you the extremist threat. Texas is next.
