Raw milk supporters rally around 'criminal' moms
The Washington Times ^ | November 2, 2011 | Jessica Claire Haney

SILVER SPRING, Maryland, November 2, 2011 – They escaped arrest. The “raw milk freedom riders” who illegally transported raw milk from a farm in Pennsylvania to FDA headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland and then drank it and distributed it to a crowd rallied in support of their efforts got away with their crime.

As reported yesterday in this column, this group of raw milk activists planned the ride and rally to protest government restrictions on the sale of raw milk and the spending of taxpayer money to raid and bankrupt small family farms.

The rally began at noon as the swelling crowd gathered to hear speakers and await the arrival of the caravan, which, after celebrating its arrest-free arrival, gave out milk and cookies for all to enjoy.

In the crowd of 150 were raw milk supporters from Massachusetts, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Minnesota, and Ohio and throughout the DC Metro area. Said Kimberly Hartke, publicist for the Weston A. Price Foundation:

“The rally was celebratory, as the moms, with joy, took back their power and acted out their food sovereignty as citizens of a free country.”

Organizer Karine Bouis-Towe of the Farm Food Freedom Coalition read a statement from the Obama administration that said:

“Barack Obama and Joe Biden recognize that local and regional food systems are better for our environment and will support family-scale producers. They will emphasize the need for Americans to buy fresh and local.”

I would not personally drink raw milk but I’ll fight for their right to drink it.

I was the oldest of 6 brats and we were brought up on raw milk. We made our own butter from the cream too. We were never sick and so far, I have made it to 63. ;>)

'brought up on a north woods farm - with our two cows, their milk, cream and butter. Same as everyone else we knew. As did people for thousands of years.

Hellava lot healthier than all the processed, GMO's, chemicalized foods and milk full of growth hormones and antibiotics and pus. Yes, pus. and drinks and baked goods full of HFCO,

I don't drink much milk nowadays, but I use organic whole. (and organic butter) I have a farmer down the road that delivers my order for eggs and vegetables right to my doorstep every week, I leave money in a cooler on the porch. How simple is that.

I'm 76 -

I am a firm believer in not just raw milk, but wholesome, natural, unrefined foods in the diet. Weston A. Price Foundation is very worthwhile, and their educational website has been a real blessing.

Most Americans do not realize that Food Freedom is at risk. That big agribusiness, through its enforcement arm, the FDA, is actively suppressing small farms who produce raw dairy. I imagine that type A2 beta casein will never see the light of day in our supermarkets.

If no sugar is added why does low fat and 2% have more sugar? I remember Atkins saying they add the sugar to give it some taste once the fat is removed.

Me too, and my kids and some of my grandkids.
You know something? I fear raw milk less than those immunizations they all try to mandate on us.

“I’m 76 - “

I hope to see how that is. ;>)

We use organic butter and I no longer use much milt and we have our own chicken, duck and goose eggs. I’m up to 60 birds. LOL

I have the same concerns about all of the junk that is now in our food.

wait until someone gets listeria.

I'm less worried about someone getting listeria, assuming they know what they're consuming, than I am about the government presuming they have the authority to delve into this aspect of my (or anyone's) life.

Now, they're coming for MY zucchini!

Shouldn't matter, IF the government wasn't paying the health care bill.

Get the government out of the health care business, and a LOT of their "justification" for nanny-statism evaporates.

Freedom includes the freedom to die from the consequences of your own ignorance, stupidity, pig headedness, or experiments.

`_____those mmunizations they all try to mandate on us.’

Such good posts here, don’t know who to respond to, then picked your post.

Our 4 daughters were raised on raw milk, delivered to the doorstep from a local dairy, around the 1970’s.
Since cow’s milk is for baby calves, our girls were not encouraged to drink milk past the age of about 12. There is calcium, better utilized, from foods other than milk.

Raw milk dairies are held to a higher cleanliness standard than others.

A few weeks ago I had this huge post going on the raw milk subject with a fellow Freeper.
And here it is again!

We continue to get raw cheese products, from the health food store.

Will fight mandated dangerous vaccines - all vaccines, actually. We consider all vaccines dangerous.

There is a provision on school forms to skip vaccines, thank God.

And yep, we are quite right of center!

by coming into contact with cow feces or bacteria living on the skin of cows, from an infection of the cow’s udder, or from dirty equipment, among others.

Wasn't "handled hygienically" in those cases then, was it? It's a wonder you didn't mention a worker sneezing into the bucket, too.

And when you talk about "Raw milk is responsible for nearly three times more hospitalizations than any other foodborne disease outbreak, making it one of the world’s most dangerous food products," you're conflating unsupervised, unregulated (in any meaningful way) Developing Countries (e.g. China) commercial enterprises; and Third World farmer families who have never heard of soap & water, let alone refrigeration, bacteria or disinfectants; with milk "handled hygienically". This a lie via true, but mostly irrelevant, statistics. Dishonest, to say the least

In any case, deceptively selling raw to the public at large, is not the same as selling to willing customers who are seeking the product, and should not be the government's business.

I Googled milk nutrition facts, and didn't see a difference in carbs between skim, 2%, and whole milk. They all had 12 or 13g carbs per serving.

It is true that some processed foods have sugar added to replace removed fat.

I have read that statement about raw milk, also, but cannot find it now that I am looking for it.

Please include the html reference for items you post from the internet.

Wasn't "handled hygienically" in those cases then, was it? It's a wonder you didn't mention a worker sneezing into the bucket, too.

I have yet to see cows that are worried about hygiene. It really makes no difference how hygienically the milk is handled; those cows are out there grazing in the same pasture where they and other animals poop, flies tend to breed where livestock is kept, and cows have frequent contact with wild animals. It is impossible to raise cows in a pathogen-free environment.

I have seen that statement before. I cannot find the original statement now that I am looking for it, but I'm fairly certain that it is talking strictly about US foodborne illnesses, which are tracked by the CDC.

In any case, deceptively selling raw to the public at large, is not the same as selling to willing customers who are seeking the product, and should not be the government's business.

A list of all pathogens known to be found in raw milk and raw milk products should be included on the label. Placing a poster of typical microbial analysis of raw milk samples nearby would be nice, too. Shouldn't people who choose to risk their health by using raw milk pay higher health insurance premiums, so the rest of us won't be subsidizing their choices?
