Updated Jan. 31, 2012: Support for former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has remained one of the few constants during the Republican nomination race. But as contenders to Mr. Romney have emerged and then faded, the GOP still seems hesitant to embrace him.
The most recent candidate to play the Anyone But Romney role is former House speaker Newt Gingrich, who recently finished first in the partys South Carolina primary.
The National Posts graphics team takes a look at the ups and downs of the race so far.

How about Newt president, Santorum VP and Paul sec of treasury?
CNN just reporting that people who voted by absentee ballot want their votes back - no can do;) LOL!!!
Willard mailed out thousands of absentee ballots - wonder which voter lists he used!!
We won’t survive as a Country under 4 more years of this. We haven’t even survived the last couple...
Romney spent 17 MILLION in Fla alone. His ads hit the airwaves 24/7. He needs 1,245 delegates to get the gop nomination. We can’t let 4 states decide our nominee and so far Romney has LOST 2 states! despite the media pundits..I have little doubt Newt would win IF Santorum would drop out.
Excellent commentary, and let’s not forget that Obama and Romney both have fathers who were not born in the US.
I would suggest, however, that Newt draw the line before LITERALLY (not just figuratively) stepping on the toes of sandaled beach bums. Even Ron Paul beach bums. While the allegations about the incident, which reportedly happened today, seem to lack witnesses, it doesn’t sound altogether unlikely that his bodyguards got Sig Heil on their own initiative and it would not be unfair to ask Newt himself about it.
I saw Axelrod on one of the alphabet Sunday morning shows. The Democrats and their media allies are going to hammer Romney on Bain and his ridiculous blind trust claim.
That is a possibility, but then if Romney gets the nomination it is a probability because Romney is going to get crucified by the MSM and the Obama Machine and he is not going to have any conservatives in his corner.
If America elects Mitt Romney to run against Obama, then maybe the country is officially over. Maybe there isn't any hope for our future.
So... we’d rally around the Tea Party, get them set up as a National Party registered in enough States to ensure an electoral win, pick a solid conservative candidate, and have all of this done by November?
Ha nice either Paul at Treasury or Director of the HUD
We send his head on a platter back to the Republican establishment and work on gaining further control of Congress and on victories at the state level.
Sometimes electing a Republican is worse for conservatives than allowing a Democrat to remain if office. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Bloomberg and Christie Todd Whitman, for example.
No. Rally around Newt NOW and NUKE Romney and the GOP-e!!
I expect Ron Paul to run Third Party regardless of the Republican nomination and its outcome.
From the precinct chairs upward to the national convention, Paul supporters are serious, and trying to be a force, just like us, and the Establishment is in trouble. It’s between Paulbots and us, but the Establishment is in permanent trouble. WE are deadly serious about not participating in the cram down nominee, and so are the Paul supporters.
Santorum is junior league when placed side by side with Newt;the decades of combat experience of Newt, the broad and transformational intellectual heft of Newt, to be able to lead a populist movement, and the ability to match Obama, issue by issue, on every conceivable level.
Rick, knowing the math, has thrown in with the Establishment, now, again, as before, against Newt. Effectively, Santorum is endorsing Romney.
How do we turn this scenario into an advantage. Are we unable to infiltrate also?
I agree, but it’s REALLY frustrating being in Indiana. We’re left sucking the hind tit and not having our primary until May 8th. We’re always left with what we’re all stuck with that I’m sick of it. I am just sick thinking we might be stuck with Romney.... Of course it is still early, he could win Florida, but if Newt would take Super Tuesday, that would be fantastic!

The tea party congressional sweep of 2010 was just a warm up. This is the year of the tea party rebellion!! Newt is a Reagan Revolution, Republican Revolution leader who has the experience, knowledge, ability and BALLS to get it done!!
We are the resistance!!
Rebellion is ON!!
Join, or die!!
Come back with better four years, and start planning for that early with good governors as that's where most presidents come from.
Well said.
If America truly does nominate Romney to run against Obama, it will be the first time in American history that a gun-grabbing, pro-abortion, pro-homosexualist, statism-loving socialist will compete against a gun-grabbing, pro-abortion, pro-homosexualist, statism-loving socialist.
If that happens, I see no future for an America that values morality, individualism, and liberty.
It's line-in-the-sand time.
As our Country is now, no. There isn't hope of fixing it. All of the mechanisms we would normally have been able to use to do so are hopelessly corrupted.
This does not mean we can't build it back up on the foundations our forefathers left for us in the Constitution. The diseased edifice currently in place must be cleared away before we can rebuild on that foundation though...
Either via a new Party, or the old fashioned hard way in a contest of arms. A new time for choosing is coming soon.
