If you’d really like to depress yourself some evening, watch “Doomsday Preppers” on the National Geographic Channel. The show details the plans of normal, well adjusted people to cope with the aftermath of fiscal collapse, nuclear holocaust, the eruption of Yellowstone, solar flares, and so on.

The New York Times noted with outrage that many of these people were accumulating guns and ammunition in order to defend their 1,500 pounds of MREs and dried brown rice, but stockpiling guns is fine with me. My concern is that most of them seem pretty inexpert with guns. One prepper was counting on a Ruger Number One single-shot which, despite its many splendid qualities, is not what you’d pick to blast the mob at your door. Another managed to shoot off several fingers during a practice session. Yet a third, a resident of the Oligarchy of Bloomberg, took lessons in knife fighting because he was unable to get a gun, ignoring the fact that everyone in the Oligarchy of Bloomberg who wants a gun has one, or several, and when the pistol-waving mob comes to this fellow’s apartment I don’t think that he and his knife will last long.

It's not just the Libs that are shocked and angered by this, there are any number of people who consider themselves to be conservatives right here on FR who are angry at preppers. Some what to bring God's Armageddon into the discuss as if they know that it will be God's will should some contastrophy befall us. Despite the fact that the history of man is full of direr times which were cause by nature or man himself. Man himself doesn't need God to help them muck things up to a point were their fellows cry out for God to end it all and relieve them of their misery.

How many Jews do you think while crammed into a cattle car on their way to some death camp didn't wish they had heed the signs more and prep for what was coming?

I want to warn you who prep, beware these pseudo-conservatives they will be the worse in someways more than many of the Libs. Many will want to punish you for being right and proving them wrong, they will even go as far as blaming you for the troubles because in their twisted way of thinking your prepping brought the 'troubles'. Some of 'it's God's will' crowd will also want to see you punished as they will see you as dodging God's punishment, they will be among the first to report you so as to make sure you too suffer what they see as the rightful wrath of God as if they know the Lord's mind.

OPSEC is not just for you Lib neighbors many that you think as being conservative thinkers will be just as dangerous.

We have talked a lot about safety in numbers and that is so true, just keep in mind not all enemies sail under their true colors.

Beware these people listen to their words carefully and keep in mind this quote from one of my favorite westerns:
"Most times a man will tell you his bad intentions if you listen, let yourself hear."

I’ve been a sort of prepper since high school in 1960. One thing bothers me, as shown in the movie DELIVERANCE.

Several business men and a survivalist (Burt Reynolds)run the river and encounter hillbillies. The survivalist saves their bacon but in the next rapids breaks his hip and has a compound fracture. And he is scared! He is now totally useless.

What happens in a SHTF situation when the most prepared person is out of action?

Excellent advice. Liberalism may be a mental illness, but the spectrum of evil does not know any one ideology. Most humans can be reduced to animalistic behavior including cannibalism.

I never underestimate both the levels of depravity and at the same time heroism exhibited by people. I have seen it first hand in my travels.

I actually cringe when I watch Doomsday Preppers

I do the 72 hour thing, not a prepper by a long shot. I am armed, practice weekly with my guns, and can last a while hunkering down in teh home front. I went through Katrina so I have an idea of what I needed.

I have camping gear (propane stoves etc), fire starting tool, knives, some water put away.

My wife is a nurse, not a psych nurse, ER, and we discuss those people, they all really need psychiatric help. The new york fire fighter, you can guess why he has a psychosis. Some of them really are undiagnosed schizophrenics and compulsive behavior issues.

Its possible to prepare for an emergency without going as far as they go. I mean the Zombie Uprising is my biggest worry, and I am prepared for that :)

On top of that, Nat Geo seems to have gone way out of their way to pick the Preppers with the lamest reasons for prepping. A few are believably prepping for economic collapse, but the rest is pretty farfetched compared to the main reason I find people prepping: fear of a totalitarian takeover attempt by a Marxist-inspired Federal government. Not ONE Prepper on the show, as far as I know, has ever come within a country mile of uttering a single syllable along those lines, despite the history of the last 100 years.

I have read that the government has a law on the books that it is illegal to stock over one month's worth of supplies. If you do, they can confiscate them for the “good of all”.

By definition, a prepper would not go on Doomsday Preppers or otherwise publicly broadcast their preparations. Why? Because that’s the opposite of being prepared. That’s setting yourself up to be one of the first targeted in the aftermath of a true doomsday scenario.
