Couple splits over 550 house cats <br> Wife was willing to lose husband, but not her pets

A man from southern Israel divorced his wife this week because she had brought 550 cats into their home.

The husband, apparently not a cat lover, told the Rabbinical Court in Beersheba that he was unable to sleep in his bedroom because the surface of the marital bed was constantly covered with cats who refused to lie on the floor.

The man, in his divorce request, complained that the cats also blocked his access to the bathroom and did not allow him to prepare meals in the kitchen, the Hebrew daily Maariv reported Wednesday. When he sat to eat, cats jumped onto the table and stole his food.

The couple attempted reconciliation at the behest of the rabbinical court. The wife, however, was unable to part from her cats… and preferred to part from her husband.

What’s really strange about this is cats aren’t normally kept as pets by Israelis in Israel. They are more like a tolerated pest that’s just there to keep the rat problem down. At least that’s what I have seen in Yerushalayim.

Any one who lives or has lived in Israel correct me if I am wrong.

I’m thinking that this cat lady probably made aliyah from America.

The domestic cat is never mentioned in the bible. The cat was like purely an Egyptian thang, which kind of makes sense because it’s such a huge sandbox.

But yes, I would bet substantial sums that not a rodent (and darn few insects, which are cat hors d’ouvres) is found on the grounds of that house.

I believe a prominent brand of cat food in Palestine is... “Catly.” Really. And that’s probably the catliest house in all Israel.

Wonder if she keeps a private veterinarian going, just by herself.

The man, in his divorce request, complained that the cats... did not allow him to prepare meals in the kitchen, the Hebrew daily Maariv reported Wednesday. When he sat to eat, cats jumped onto the table and stole his food.

That doesn't sound Kosher to me.

At one point of my life I had six cats. I was scared that I was going to become a cat lady. I can’t imagine having 550 cats. How does one keep their names straight?

What did she feed them besides her husband’s meal? A cow per day? 12 chickens? 50 lbs of salmon? Were the cats vegetarians?

Were they taken to the vet? That’s 2 per day. Spay/neuter?

How does one know if one cat goes missing?

Too much, perhaps, of a good thing.

I have six in the house right now (two adult cats plus four kittens) and have decided that is too many. Thankfully, I have homes lined up for three of the kittens; we’re keeping the last one.

Also, over the course of the evening I saw an equal number of strays in my backyard. It might be time to set up my live trap again...
