American civilians buy as many AK47s as the Russian military and police

American civilians are buying as many AK47s from Russia's top armory as the Russian military and police.

The surge in sales of Russian assault rifles and shotguns are fuelled by firearms enthusiasts who are paranoid about the weapons being banned in the United States.

The semiautomatic weapons, fitted with high-capacity magazines, are manufactured at Izhevsk Machinebuilding Plant, Russia's primary small arms factory.

They are built alongside the fully-automatic military versions that are used by armies, militias and terrorists around the world.

In the United States, they have become immensely popular. Among hunters, recreational shooters and survivalists, they are known for being extremely reliable and relatively inexpensive -- and they fire powerful ammunition that is cheap and plentiful.

Because everyone in the Russian police has already got one.

We’re trying to catch up...

I personally find the 7.62x39 a bit anemic against moose and black bear. Not a fan of the AK, I do have an SKS but thats it, I prefer the .308.

That makes them more dangerous, since they have associated with such a rough crowd.

FTA: The surge in sales of Russian assault rifles and shotguns are fuelled by firearms enthusiasts who are paranoid about the weapons being banned in the United States.

That may be true, but not in the way the author intends.

Paranoid: Exhibiting or characterized by extreme and irrational fear (the part of the definition I think the author intends)

or

distrust of others.

Which is probably the correct definition to use.

The Kenyan must go.

The advantage of the 7.62X39 is the ubiquity of the ammo.

For those concerned about ammo availability, _my opinion_ is that you should have something in these calibers:
.22
7.62X39
9mm
12 guage

There are others, I’m sure, and you could replace the 7.62 & 9mm with something else, but I think the .22 and 12 guage are pretty darn solid picks.

worried about a ban might be the “front” reason to buy them,
but deep underneath is the understanding, not “fear”, that the gov’t under the control of leftists WILL use force to make the citizenry comply and give up freedoms.

These weapons are fairly cheap and widely available, and that is what is driving their purchase.

They’re not ak-47. mostly. An ak-47 is automatic. These are civilian “ak-47”. There is a difference.

Most people don’t consider reloading the 12ga as they would a caliber case center fire, and nobody realistically considers reloading the case primer .22 so yes these two should be stockpiles as much as possible.

Well the were cheap and I guess relative the market they still are, but I brought my AK 74 just 2 1/2 years ago since then the same weapon will now cost you easily double what I paid for it.

Agree on .22 and 12 gage and replace the others with 30-06 (or .308) and 45 ACP.
