Allen West also comes out against Akin
Facebook ^ | 8/20 | Allen West

Last week my opponent put out a tv ad depicting me beating women. That ad is disgraceful and despicable. As a husband and father of two daughters, I found Congressman Todd Akin’s comments about rape to be in the same vein. These comments are simply unacceptable. There is no place in politics for these type of comments and attitudes toward women.

“Legitimate” is just a stupid choice of words.

“Actual incidents of rape” or such and he could have gotten away with it.

Still, it says a lot that he’s never been coached or thought the issue through enough to give a well worded answer to the oldest and most cliched trap in the book.

That tells me he’s never had to run against a real democrat in his entire life, that he’s only has campaign experience in a conservative district where abortion isn’t an issue that will be brought up because the district is pro-life.

Why? Why? Why? Jerk Akin basically said that there are some rapes that are false claims. We all know about the lady who gets drunk, sleeps with the wrong guy, and wakes up and cries rape. We here at FR have been writing about it for years!

And during some rapes (as well as in marriage and dating) there is sometimes a physical shutdown of a woman’s vagina that does not allow penetration. We used to call it frigidity. But, in fact, it is the body protecting itself.

Look, the guy was inarticulate (he’s a Republican, after all) but let’s not throw him under the bus.

The deadline is 5PM CST. I vote in PA, so I’ll defer to Missourians.

If it was my call, however, I’d want Sarah Steelman. Endorsed by Sarah Palin and the TEA Party Express, she is Claire-a-bell’s worst nightmare, IMO.

This was no gaffe. Putting an e on potato is a gaffe. A comment from which the logical conclusion is that if a woman is a pregnant, then it wasn’t legitimate rape, is political suicide.

You are correct. But if joe biden had said it the msm would be making excuses and burying the story.

I donated to Sarah Steelman but thought Akin was a good guy.

He is too stupid to take up space in the 2012 race.

He's already under the bus, nothing we can do about it.

Just read that the TEA Party Express has asked him to step aside also.

It's snowballed fast, he's done.

All of this piling on is a political calculation that the only way the Reps can win in Missouri is to get someone else. It has nothing to do with what was actually said, but how it will play in the Senate race.

I really can't understand the GOP, which eats its own. A mere statement, which Akin apologized for is sufficient to draw a mob that denounces him with some calling for his to withdraw from the race. Is it any wonder that the Dems think they can force the Reps to cower in the corner about every phrase they may utter. No wonder they are afraid to go after Obama's personal narrative whether it is his BC, school transcripts, etc.

In the meantime, we have Ted Kennedy leaving a girl to drown in a car he was driving, Clinton molesting women in the WH and raping one, and Rangel and Geitner filing false tax returns. So what is the Dem response. They support their own thru thick and thin.

Remember that crowd fronm Congress that went down to the WH to support Clinton after he was impeached? And now Clinton is primed to speak as a Party elder at the convention. Contrast that with the Palin has been treated by the GOP--not even being allowed to speak despite all of the grassroots activity she did in support of GOP candidates and fundraising. The GOP is afraid that Palin will be a liability.

The GOP deserves no loyalty when they treat their own this way. Remember how Trent Lott was demoted when he misspoke at a birthday party. Akin did not kill or rape anyone. He did not pull the race card like Biden. And you know after all of this, McCaskill could still win even if Akin is replaced or she could lose even if Akin stays. Anyone looking at Akins public record in its totality will see that he is a strong conservative (lifetime ACU rating of 97.) This is another "macaca moment" and the GOP blinks again.

That is what makes the Democrats so contemptible. I'd like to think that the conservatives hold themselves to higher standards.

Akin was born in New York City, the son of Nancy Perry (née Bigelow) and Rev. Paul Bigelow Akin. He moved to St. Louis and attended John Burroughs School. After graduating, he attended the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts where he earned a degree in management engineering, and in 1984 he earned a Master of Divinity degree at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis. During college he was member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

From 1972 to 1980, Akin served in the Missouri National Guard. After his military career, he took up work at IBM as an engineer and later became a manager at Laclede Steel Company.

Akin was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 1988, representing Town and Country and much of West County. He won re-election in 1990 (59%), 1992 (100%), 1994 (70%), 1996 (67%), and 1998 (66%). 12 years in the state house, Akin voted for carrying concealed weapons, voted against the parks and soils sales tax, voted against the 1993 tax increase and education spending increase. Akin sponsored legislation to prohibit casino companies from contributing to Missouri state lawmakers. In 1995, he fought Democrat Governor Mel Carnahan on state-funding for abortion, which Akin opposed.

In 2000, Republican U.S. Representative Jim Talent vacated the seat in his unsuccessful run for Governor of Missouri. Akin won a closely contested Republican primary election to replace Talent, defeating former St. Louis County Executive Gene McNary and State Senator Franc Flotron. He defeated Democratic State Senator Ted House in the general election, winning 55 percent of the vote. He never faced another contest even that close, and was reelected five times.

In 2010, Akin won re-election with 67.9% of the vote. He had been challenged for the seat by Democratic nominee Arthur Lieber, Libertarian nominee Steve Mosbacher, and write-in candidate Patrick M. Cannon.

Akin has a lifetime ACU rating of 97.24.

That’s really stupid. He said something dopey and inarticulate (Biden, anyone?); but we perfect Tea Partiers would rather throw him under the bus and end up with a lib in power.

I am so tired of this higher standard BS. This has nothing to do with standards, but rather, a political calculation. Does someone with Akin's record and background deserve to be castigated and banished for making a verbal gaffe?

There is a reason the GOP is called the Stupid Party. This election will be one of the nastiest and divisive this country will ever have. Obama and his thugs will pull no punches and spare nothing to win. They are bare knuckle street fighters intent on destroying the opposition.

If the GOP conducts the 2012 campaign like it did in 2008, it will lose again and continue to lose. No personal attacks on Obama. No questions about his associations with terrorists and communists. No attacks on his personal narrative. I guess the GOP can sit back on its smug high standards and feel superior in defeat. The only problem is that if we lose this election, it is game, set, and match for the country.

Anthony Weiner was tossed by the Dem establishment.

Akin is just a bonehead . . There are plenty of conservatives in Missouri that can do better. There is no need to circle the wagons around him.

Anthony Weiner was tossed by the Dem establishment.

And you are comparing a verbal gaffe with Weiner sending out pictures of his weiner? No doubt Weiner will be rehabilitated by the Dems in much the same way that Eliot Spitzer and Clinton were.

Loyalty begets loyalty. Join the rabid herd stampeded by the MSM to destroy someone who had an exemplary record and strong sense of decency. Maybe the Left and the MSM don't like him because of his religiousity. Sort of like that head of Chick fil A who had skewed family values, i.e., he believes that marriage is between a man and a woman No wonder Rahm Emanuel said he didn't have Chicago values.

Allen West on the Issues:
Voted YES on banning federal health coverage that includes abortion.

Congressional Summary: Prohibits the expenditure of federal funds for any abortion.

Prohibits federal funds from being used for any health benefits coverage that includes coverage of abortion. (Currently, federal funds cannot be used for abortion services and health plans must keep federal funds segregated from any funds for abortion services.)

Disallows any tax benefits for amounts paid or incurred for an abortion.

Provides exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest; or life-endangering maternal condition. http://ontheissues.org/FL/Allen_West_Abortion.htmj [emphasis;mine]

Possibly Akin tweaked a nerve with West and others who don't understand the full scope of unborn LIFE.

This is not a "gaffe" or a jumble of misspoken words. This isn't like Dan Quayle spelling potato with an "e" or Sarah Palin fumbling over what books she recently read. Otherwise, I'd be defending him.

What Akin basically said was that any woman claiming her pregnancy was due to rape is lying because if it was a "legitimate" rape, her female body would have found ways to prevent the pregnancy from happening. I don't know, maybe Akin thinks the female body produces some sort of "sperm-killing" bacteria or something.

No matter how you slice it, this is kooky stuff and not something conservatives need to be defending for the next 11 weeks when they should be focused on building on their 2010 victories and taking this nation back. Akins can spout his nonsense on Art Bell while we put a responsible adult in charge of winning the Missouri senate seat.
