Thanks to one of my Facebook friends, I was just today alerted to the interview Romney gave CBS news on 8/27/2012. The video is here. In the interview, Romney says, "My position has been clear throughout this campaign. I'm in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest and the health and life of the mother."
The health of the mother exception is universally recognized by authentic pro-lifers as a loophole you can drive Roe v. Wade through. Then Romney makes the following statement, clearly putting an end to any notion that he is pro-life in any meaningful sense of the term:
"But recognize, this is the decision that will be made by the Supreme Court. The Democrats try and make this a political issue every four years, but this is a matter in the courts; it's been settled for some time in the courts...."
Translation: Pro-life is whatever the Supreme Court says it is. Romney's statement proves that with his nomination, the Republican Party effectively ceases to be the Party of Lincoln. Lincoln recognized that where a fundamental issue of unalienable rights is involved, no Supreme Court decision that fails to respect the principles of America's Declaration of Independence "settles the issue." By contrast, what we hear in Romney's interview is the slavish surrender of unchecked, unconstitutional, just plain tyrannical power to the federal courts. Did the Dred Scott decision in 1857 settle the issue of slavery? Not for Lincoln. No more can the present U.S. Supreme Court's pro-abortion jurisprudence settle the issue of abortion for us. In keeping with the Lincolnian heritage, the pro-life movement has been rooted in the Declaration's avowal of the Creator-endowed, equal, unalienable right to life. That's one of the things that made the Party of Lincoln its natural home.
But with Romney as its standard bearer, the GOP no longer upholds that avowal. To be sure, the GOP platform still makes cynical use of language drawn from America's Declaration heritage. But with his words, Romney rejects Lincoln's Declaration statesmanship; his articulation of the just cause of the Civil War; and his affirmation that the American people should never allow the Union to be dissolved on grounds that overthrow the indispensable principle of just self-government the Declaration articulates.
In this interview, Romney aims a death blow at the soul of the pro-life political cause. The timing of the interview was no accident. The evening before the vote that sealed his nomination as the GOP candidate for President, Romney makes a clear and emphatic statement nullifying the GOP's supposed platform commitment to the Declaration cause of the pro-life movement. So-called pro-life leaders and voters who back Romney cannot now deny that he stands openly within the political precincts of pro-abortion hell. As his supporters, they stand there with him. What we hear in Romney's CBS interview is the sound of the precincts' gates clanging shut behind them all. As I forewarned repeatedly: Romney's candidacy is a snare (Psalm 64:5), beware of falling into it.
On the other hand, after a couple more years of Obama, nobody will be able to afford an abortion...or food...or gas...medicine...clothing...electricity....
LOL...you guys are a real hoot.
I’ve been here twelve years and never made a secret of who I am.
My name is on my homepage. Is yours?
There in lies the rub. There is no way that the GOP is going to pick up the 15-plus seats it'll need to make it to 60 in the Senate. And there is no way the Democrats aren't going to filibuster everything that Romney sends their way. Especially something concerning abortion. Romney's attempts to appear moderate isn't going to make a bit of difference to Reid and his mob.
No, I’m trying to get you to see that the rapists created a terrible situation.
He is totally to blame. Depending on the circumstances and evidence, I don’t have a problem with the death penalty for the rapist in extreme circumstances.
The woman is the victim of a terrible crime and injustice. Only she has the moral right to determine her future.
If you choose the baby over the mother, I can understand your logic, but then at least acknowledge that the mother will have more suffering and that her consent is unimportant.
Why would my name be on your homepage? Seriously, you're running for the presidency, yet won't state it emphatically in your posts? You expect people to discover that by going to your homepage, then scrolling down to a couple lines of text amongst all the clutter, that makes the round-about confession? That's how you run an election campaign?
You're nothing but a pretender, a gnat in the eye of an elephant. You don't even have the integrity to attack Obama. You only attack the GOP. That there is confirmation you want Obama to win. You're a damned Obama troll. Nothing more. Begone you silly little dufus.
One strange dude ~ that's your "extenuating circumstances" delimiter BTW.
the author sounds so reasonable because everything he says is blatantly obvious. Was a bit of a shock to see it was written by Keyes. He doesn’t sound like himself.
I only work for local state legislative conservative candidates. Do not do anything for the Romney organization. The “conservatives” on here pining for Romney don’t realize how silly they sound.
“OH PLEASE VOTE FOR MR. ROMNEY OR THAT OBAMA WILL BE PRESIDENT!!! AND IT WOULD BE ALL YOUR FAULT.”
That guy is still around ~ and seriously, he needs to have his politics plug pulled. Just waiting on the Democrats to start hollering about this guy.
We have in Romney a man of compromise, not a man of principle. He is a politician, not a statesman. He does not carefully think through the morality of a matter. Rather, he carefully considers its political consequences. He is easily swayed and always seeks the most acceptable position. As a national figure he is at best transitional between tyranny and constitutional government.
You got my point. I’m finished arguing with these fools. Just pull their Alynski tactics on them. It reminds me of seeing an adult arguing with a 5 year old about anything. Makes one wonder who the smartest one in the argument really is.
Yeah but it sure is fun teasing them. I enjoy it so...
You never once addressed the mothers suffering and lack of consent. You have no answers for this.
“One strange dude ~”
Pot calls kettle black.
“That may well be the absolute worst thing I’ve ever seen posted on FR.”
The simple fact is that the state is never going to force a rape victim to bear a child that is the product of the rape.
Abortion is wrong, and our society (especially the younger generation) is coming around to this viewpoint. A position such as yours that a rape victim should be forced to give birth to a rapists child only sets back the pro-life movement.
Would it be your contention that the rape victim should be raise this child as well? And if not, maybe she should have to pay child support so that someone else could raise the child?
There are a lot more ectopic pregnancies in this country than there are rape pregnancies. These little ones are innocent too are they not? How would you handle those in your perfect world?
Over 50 million babies have been murdered since roe/wade. That should be our focus.
What you don’t understand is that it was exceptions to the unalienable right to life that opened the door to abortion on demand. And it is exceptions that keep that door wide open.
It is inevitable, because, once you abandon the principle of equality before the law, you have nothing left, morally, legally, or politically.
By the way, the whole “forcing the rape victim to carry the child” thing is a wicked formulation.
All society is saying is that it is unlawful to kill another innocent human being, no matter what anyone else did to you.
Anything else is barbarism.

“Obama has done everything in his power to advance abortion and continue that pro-abortion legacy of the Supreme Court, including naming two more pro-abortion jurists in Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor. He has also expanded that 53 million abortions by authorizing abortion funding in various instances and decreasing funds for abstinence education.”

Willard is definitely a mixed bag but as a minority (albeit a large bloc) conservatives—unlike Democrats or the GOP establishment—don’t have the luxury of suspending reality, or using doublethink: accepting two contradictory beliefs simultaneously as true, to rationalize hard choices.
The two candidates are not equivalent. I can give 53 million reasons why to vote for the GOP candidate.
So, choose. Not choosing is a choice.
So...until then, I will continue to hope for the best while I prepare for the worst.
My last hope for this election is nothing more than that, hope:
I hope that if you take Romney out of Mass. and replace that ultra liberal constituency with the much larger and vocal conservative base throughout the nation, including the "red" states and their conservative governors, we will see a more conservative Romney who governs accordingly.
That's all I have left. The rest is all about preparing for the worst.
my proposed agenda for freepers:
1. Do not sign up to be an unpaid lackey for Romney, Inc.
2. Work hard this fall for a local conservative in a close race. Get him/her elected.
3. Start the 2016 campaign if you are obsessed with all things Presidential.
4. If Romney, Inc. wins, the 2016 is cancelled. Start the 2020 campaign.
Cyanide or strychnine is not a legitimate choice.
