WHAT is Romney doing with his money? Where are the ads??
October 6th 2012 | County Agent Hank Kimball

OK, I don't watch a lot of regular network programming. Here's what I watch:

Major Legue Baseball
College and NFL Football
FoxNews
Occasional reruns of Frasier, which appear on the Hallmark Channel I believe.

My wife, however, watches various things on Bravo like those insipid Real Housewife shows, Top Chef, etc. (Yes, I know...) and Lifetime Channel.

Neither of us have seen a SINGLE Romney ad in weeks. Not one. I have seen dozens of Obama ads, and they appear to be generating new ones all the time. The most recent, today, was a rebuttal to the debate featuring Andrea Mitchell, and I saw that at least 3 times today alone.

Are the Romney people doing ANY advertising on national cable channels? I'm not kidding when I say I've seen not one, and neither has my wife.

Are they saving their money for a big election-nigh party? Spending it on consultants?

I must admit I'm at a loss.

Hank

The last report I saw, sometime in the last week, is that Obama is out-collecting and out-spending Romney by significant amounts.

That was in a post here on Free Republic.

Sack Ed Gillespie and the Bush cronies on the Romney Campaign Team. Reince Priebus, RNC Chair is worse that useless. Rats always fight in the trenches, blood and guts. The Republican bluebloods have no clue.

Satellite cannot target content to the extent that cable can. However, if you have a DVR, targeted commercials can be downloaded to your set-top box, and only played in your specific area [one of the ways DVR costs are underwritten for satellite providers is by providing targeted advertising.] Local ad content is then inserted at predetermined times from the downloaded content.

That is no longer true. The cable networks are able to substitute commercials in various locations on nationally broadcasted programs. It may already be technologically possible to specify commercials by households.

OK. Thanks. This isn’t my field and I appreciate the education. But bear with me here, becuse I DO work in marketing and something still doesn’t make sense.

It would make sense to me that a network like TBS, say, would reserve SOME block of ads that it sells nation-wide. Don’t they sell advertising directly? And if so, don’t they need to base that on some guaranteed (or estimated) viewership?

Now as I think this through, though, maybe I’m seeing your point even more clearly. Apparently Filth is placing nation-wide buys while Romney is doing only the targeted local buys.

Which I understand, but still don’t necessarily think is smart. People travel. They watch in hotels and bars. They watch in aunt Minnie’s house while they’re on vaction in the neighboring state. Still seems short-sighted.

But I think I’m starting to get what I at least HOPE they’re doing.

Thanks,
Hank

Too bad he’s not using that money he’s outraising R&R in collecting to buy himself some debating lessons! What an Urkel!

I don’t think anybody does national buys for political ads anymore.

It's a waste of money to run ads nationally when it can be used to target ads in local markets.

Look, it's the 21st century. The campaigns have robust "data mining" operations. They know precisely where they need to advertise for best effect. They don't need to target even an entire state.

The election will turn on precincts. That's just how it is.

Mr. Kimball,

Please step away from the insecticide and pay attention. Regardless of whether or not a shows are across the country, either regular network or cable, there are STILL local ads. My cable distributor is local, many are local. You don’t have Buckeye cable (an Ohio company) in Texas, do you?

How’s the central valley? SB gas went up $0.50 in one week.
Local news is saying probably another $0.50 next Friday.
There was an alert on the local news at 5 on ABC saying LA reg was $5.99 and super $6.29.
AND there is a shortage, stations are shutting down because they can’t get deliveries. I don’t know what farmers are going to do or truckers transporting goods.
Well, all I can say is the evening is about 70 degrees, no wind just soft sea breezes.........so going back on the deck and sip wine.

I’ve never done the DVR thing. Kind of feel like I would cross-over a line I don’t want to cross where TV would run my life too much. ;-)

Anyway, anything I’d ever want to see that I missed I can probably find on You Tube.

I have DirecTV. Someone has explained to me that you can’t target satellite ads locally like you can cable. Which is unfortunate.

But thaks for the concern. I wish we could get DDT back. THAT stuff was actually safe! ;-)

Sure, and somebody selling cars or tires or beer or UPS will buy them, of course.

Apparently Filth is placing nation-wide buys while Romney is doing only the targeted local buys.

0's marketing people aren't dumb, so I'd be surprised if they're doing a lot of national slots. It's just too expensive and he isn't really a "national" candidate. There are vast expanses of territory in the West and South 0 isn't going to carry. You may be getting bleed over because he's trying to hit some Latinos in NM and nearby states.

He loaned it all to the Obama camp so they could roll it and snort blow. It appears to be rather effective, don’t you think?

okay, that was funny...

If obama performs in the second debate like he did in the first Romney won’t have to spend another cent to win!

I’m in Colorado and am sick to death of the ads. We mute the TV when BHO’s come on. I was watching football today and saw Romney ad after Romney ad. Good. It seemed like for awhile we were muting the TV a lot...

See plenty of ads on network TV for both candidates in the VA/DC/MD market. The most devastating for Romney is the one where they repeat the 47% remark and the sentences both before and after which really don’t do much to soften it.
