FreeRepublic is sometimes referred to as a news aggregator, but then, so are some other blog sites.
FreeRepublic is sometimes referred to as a conservative site, but then, so are some other blog sites.
So, then, what is it about FreeRepublic that we find of such value that we visit it and read it dozens of times each day? What do we get out of it that we can get nowhere else?
I will start with my two cents. Then I invite you to offer yours.
First, its mission is stated loud and clear. God. Family. Country. Life. Liberty. Conservative.
You won't get that from any of the corrupted media.
Second, I often find more value in the comments of dedicated Freepers than I do in the articles themselves. The comments help me to frame and understand how I should view any given news article. I may at times disagree with an opinion, but it helps me to form my own opinion nevertheless.
Third, I have the option of participating - to help shape the opinions of other Freepers and sometimes of the news itself. My two cents are validated, reviled, or ignored. It helps me to stay on a conservative track. I am not misled by liberally biased media.
Fourth, Freepers are immediately on top of important news items. We race to be the first to post. I have the important news of the world at my fingertips in a matter of minutes.
Fifth, I feel at home. FreeRepublic is a gathering of like-minded individuals. I am proud to be counted one of you.
As a digest of pertinent news, I find the format easy to read and sort through, and the cast of characters often makes the comments both highly entertaining and occasionally enlightening.
Other sites, though, impress me more with their philosophical stances. I’ve seldom felt like I really belong here in many ways, and there’s never been a single personal friendship I’ve developed with anyone here. And yet I’ve been here off and on - and a monthly donor off and on - since newsgroups gave way to the web during the Clinton scandals, and it sort of just feels like home in some strange way.

My FR performance is the same on FF and IE, unfortunately.
“Thank you very much. Were working on it. Hope to have it fixed soon.”
It seems suddenly much faster than it has been for weeks. I can’t usually even get in this time of the day. I hope that it is a keeper. Lots of People would like to know What John Found.
A day without FreeRepublic is like a day without sunshine.
I quit watching TV news a couple of months before the 2008 election. Pretty much everything that’s really important is posted by one of you. Plus I’ve learned how to deal with car and computer problems and glommed onto some super recipes.
Thanks for allowing an oldster to hang around. You’ve taught me a lot!
Amen to that! Not only are FREEPERS freakin’ geniuses, often times they post things that don’t make the news.
For example after the Columbine shootings the ‘Toon came down to give an speech and to get points for ‘feeling the pain’.
Everyone knew that but thanks to FR it got out that the Pres wasn’t allowed on the school to make the address. The parents didn’t want him to politicise this event.
He had to use a local YMCA gym (I think).
That only got out because of FR.
“Liberty” equal capital “F” in Free Republic. Just a message to the boot licking trolls and assorted authority lovers, who apparent here for the small “f”....as in no cost.
I will donate an extra $20 when Romney wins. I think it will do more good here than the RNC.
Yeah, since I got laid off last week, this is pretty much all I do (other than look for work for a little while online every morning). Just can’t get enough. I may need to detox after the election...
Oh my goodness. I just ran across your post here and felt such nostalgia. Your ongoing 419 adventures were among my favorite FR threads of all time. Thanks for many many laughs.
