ANNOUNCEMENT: Possible good news regarding our server
Jim Robinson

Posted on 11/05/2012 11:20:31 AM PST by Jim Robinson

Some good news perhaps. John says he has found a problem with one of the servers and he's going to try to configure around it. But it'll take him a couple hours or more before he's ready to test it. Hang in there. Prayers up that it works!

Exciting news. Last night I couldn’t get on and trouble shooting provided the following: FreeRepublis is online but is not responding.

I know the bugs will work out.

Something I have noticed and been testing today...

When you click on a link (to open or browse a thread), you will see the little circling thing with Firefox and see the
“Connecting...” message.

Now this may go on for a while. Sometimes, the link opens successfully, while other times, you get the “Failed to connect...” message in Firefox.

It seemed odd to me that I could try to open a new window/thread and it would hang, meanwhile, I could go back to the window with “Latest posts”, click refresh and it would come back almost immediately.

So I tried opening some new threads in new windows.

Many got hung up.

But IF... IF I went up to the address bar, and clicked it (so as to highlight the thread URL), and pressed enter, IT OPENED THE THREAD ALMOST IMMEDIATELY.

I have successfully used this technique almost twenty times and it has worked EVERY time.

SO!!

I think there might be what is generally called a “bracket error”.
That’s when a stream of data get sent out as a unit with START-END brackets, and t is the responsibility of the interpreting software to put it together.
Of course you can have nested brackets, serial bracket sequences, just about whatever.

I’ve seen these types of errors before. They are notoriously hard to diagnose, but once diagnosed, extremely easy to fix.

Just my 2 cents...

Uh oh, look out for that law of unintended consequences.

Yeah, I know. Performing meatball brain surgery on a conscience, kicking and screaming patient is risky.

Hope so but the system administrators need to consider what type of hardware monitoring can be put into place to detect this in the future. If a hardware component is failing or even suspect, the SA should be notified immediately. Ideally a automated failover would occur but a prompt manual changeover is better than none. In principle the same type of system health monitoring can be applied to the network and the database. As you probably know, that's the way we did it in the VAXen world decades ago!!!
