Glenn Beck Defends Gay Marriage: Republicans Need To 'Expand Our Own Horizon'
Business Insider ^ | 12/11/2012 | Grace Wyler

Conservative firebrand Glenn Beck has joined a growing chorus of Republican commentators in defending gay marriage, laying out a strong case for ending government opposition to letting same-sex couples wed.

"Let me take the pro-gay marriage people and the religious people — I believe that there is a connecting dot there that nobody is looking at, and that's the Constitution," Beck said during a recent segment of his online talk show. "The question is not whether gay people should be married or not. The question is why is the government involved in our marriage?"

While Beck's defense of gay marriage may seem surprising, given his far-right political views and audience, it is actually not new. Earlier this year, Beck said that he has the "same opinion on gay marriage as President Barack Obama" and does not see same-sex unions as a "threat to America."

Still, Beck's public renewal of his support for gay marriage comes at a politically significant moment for the GOP, which is working to reshape its message to appeal to a changing electorate. A Gallup survey released last week found that 53 percent of Americans are in favor of legalizing gay marriage, a number that has been steadily growing for the past decade.

Moreover, by couching his support for gay marriage in a libertarian framework, Beck makes the case for the right to look past differences on social issues in order to broaden their coalition to include all limited government conservatives.

"What we need to do, I think, as people who believe in the Constitution, is to start looking for allies who believe in the Constitution and expand our own horizon," Beck said. "We would have the ultimate big tent."

I agree and believe that most of what we see happening within our culture can be laid at the feet of the church. If they don’t have standards and fight for their doctrines and beliefs, who will? The church in the US is not much more than a social club. It sleeps in the light while the world is overcome with darkness.

Marriage is recognized from state to state, including common-law marriage, even in states in which it isn’t legal, the homosexual thing is confusing that but only temporarily, in the end, we all know that gay marriages will come to be accepted, even in states that won’t perform them.

If you think that a 50 state quilt of marriage definitions will exist, think again.

Wishing that marriages will only exist locally, is a pipe dream because people move, and travel, even die and get ill in other states.

The culture will change for the worse when you endorse the unnatural. By doing so, you promote humanity being its own god.

As we've become a godless people we've been given over to vile passions.

Bear with me as I try to articulate this thought. For Christians marriage is supposed to be more than just the union of a man and a woman. We are supposed to be an example of the marriage to come between our Savior and His bride. We are supposed to have the man as the head of the household as Jesus is the head of the body. We are supposed to be faithful to our spouse not only in a physical sense but in an emotional and psychological capacity just as Jesus not only is married to the Bride of Christ but heals it, protects it emotionally and through grace provides eternal peace. IOW, for Christians marriage is more than a contractual arrangement made for the protection of children and the betterment of society.

Marriage for a Christian is a living out of our faith and the joy to come when Jesus marries His Bride.

I am really beginning to loathe the self righteous phariseeical legalistic fundamentalist big government jerks - who are under the ignorant spell that being the most stridently extreme on social issues is the definition of conservative. It is not. Ansel, you have a very demented and wrong definition of what being “to the right” means. Not only that, but you have a very shallow way of analyzing what is going on.

This leaves you a judgmental, yet unintelligent, purveyor of your ideas.

Unfortunately you miss the point.

You are assuming that the people in power will use good judgement and have a moral basis.

You say “It is right to quarantine the dangerous.”, what happens when a tyrant decides to quarantine us.

Everyone misses this glaring point. We are way beyond thinking we can turn this around, etc... The only answer if the Republic is to survive is to drive government out of our lives in any way, shape possible!

You big government types keep thinking it can’t happen here, or that somehow people like Obama will find their moral compass, etc... you can’t find what doesn’t exist - after all it really depends on what your definition of is - is...

The left has a new argument to achieve their goals, but the goals stay the same, at the end of the road, they want their homosexual marriage and the continuing of victories over conservatism.

I would like to put you pro-homosexual marriage/leftist agenda people up against the people that created this nation, and see if you could prevail against them, or if you would find yourselves swinging from a rope.

big government jerks - who are under the ignorant spell that being the most stridently extreme on social issues is the definition of conservative.

A good example of how right you are, is the idiotic mob like psychology embraced by so many Congressional Republicans, in mindlessly intruding Congress into the middle of a long litigated Probate Court Case in Florida, in 2005. (See Schiavo Case.)

That gambit probably resulted in the Congressional election disaster in 2006. But far worse than merely an election set back, it demonstrated an abysmal ignorance of fundamental legal principles, including the right, cited in the grievances in the Declaration of Independence, to have access to local Courts, to deal with local problems.

The one or two or three issue fanatic is no help to any long term cause.

You are mostly repeating yourself with what you evidently perceive as cutesy insults, it doesn’t change which side of this fight that you are on.

“...will come to be accepted...”

If they can be legislated into widespread acceptance, can’t they be legislated into being performed, under penalty-of-law? That intrudes into the 1st Amendment area, bigtime. Are you saying that the USCon/BoR will be overridden by then?

I don’t have a problem with homo/lesbo civil unions, but *marriage* is another matter. ‘Course, I’ll be dead & gone by the time that all happens.

Like I said, I will die for my beliefs. This isn't Plan A. Plan B would be making the other Side die for their beliefs.

Just sayin'...

That works when we are at YOUR church, but John’s Mosque says that God defined marriage as polygamy, and Joey of the Gay Goat church, says that it is defined as 2 or more men joined in love forever.

Pretending in modern America, that religion’s definition of ‘marriage’ suffices, isn’t enough.
