Bypassing Congress, the Obama administration has issued a proposed administrative rule, which if adopted, would mandate the installation of “black boxes” in all automobiles and light trucks beginning in 2014.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed the regulation on Dec. 7, which it said “would capture valuable safety-related data in the seconds before and during a motor vehicle crash.”

The proposed standard would require automakers to install event data recorders (EDRs)—so-called “black box devices”—to collect specific safety-related data in all light passenger vehicles beginning Sept. 1, 2014. …

It makes you harder to track. I suspect you know this.

Once the Patriot Act passed, the govt had full permission into all of our personal details. One of the worst things ever done to this country.

The bureaucrat listening into my car will hear Mark Levin every night between 5:00 - 6:00. Maybe he/she will learn something. . .

Poor and minorities hardest hit.

What this means is that the company that manufactures them gave Ubama a boatload of money.

“So does that mean if you use cash, don’t have a cell phone, and drive a ‘63 Plymouth that they don’t know you exist?”

Don’t forget Facebook! :)

The #1 totally warrantless and “public” way to get speedy info on someone. If there is enough info, even a rough psych profile.

Plus, you are assisting the democrat party at the same time because Facebook shares data with them and donates to them. Total win-win... /puke

“If your car has air bags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic fuel injection, odds are you also have one of these boxes, you already have all the sensors.”

Not necessarily. I posted on this a few days ago. As a third year law student, I just did a paper on the Fourth Amendment and lower expectation of privacy in a vehicle. BMW (as of my paper) is refusing to comply with this mandate. It remains to be seen if they are serious once the government clamps down on them.

Only if you wear a bag over your head to beat the facial recognition, and remove your car’s license plate to beat the auto-logging, auto-reading license plate cameras.

This also a revenue generating thing. I recently attended a tech class where they talked about this technology. The government can monitor the speed your car is travelling and issue a speeding summons through the mail. They can also issue other summonses such as expired inspections, insurance and registrations. Under the EPA they will know when your cars check engine light comes on issue a summons for polluting the air. This is sick.

Sounds violative of the 4th Amendment, and therefore a felony: Deprivation of Rights under color of Law.

If I go to buy a car and they tell me it has this device in it (I will ask of course), I will tell them to remove it or I’m not buying the car. If there is no LAW that says it is required then obama can kiss my ass.

What will the black boxes tell them that the billions of surveillance cameras all over the country won’t?

And, in order to preserve the data, will the black boxes be built of a nearly indestructible material? If so, why not build the cars of the same stuff and save the trouble?
